Have you ever been to any sporting event with the aroma of popcorn and after your voice was completely shot? Well at every Oak Leafs game your voice will more than likely be gone. The games get wild not only for the players, but especially the fans. The fans are all into and engaged and make the walls at Metro Arena shake. Going to an Oak Leafs game will leave you hyped up and wanting you to go to the next game because you want more of the action. Some may ask why we cheer for the Oak Leafs and the answer is simply because mostly all the students who go to Southeast Polk High School (SEP) and play hockey are a part of the team. Since High Schools in Iowa don’t have hockey as a school sport, the kids play for a club instead. Playing for the Oak Leafs is basically our High School's Hockey team. The kids from SEP play for the Oak Leafs because there is a draft that happens and I don’t know exactly how it works but i think it is based upon the location of where you live. My friend who plays for the Leafs told me that he thinks he got drafted to the Leafs because of the Leafs players that are a year older …show more content…
than him were on the team. Regardless of the draft or not more than likely if you go to SEP you will play for the Leafs. The Des Moines Oak Leafs and the Des Moines Capitols have a big rivalry that everyone wants to be a part of, even the fans.
They have such a huge rivalry between each other because they all played with each other when they were young pups and most definitely don’t want to lose to each other. Everyone even if they don’t play sports has had this type of rivalry between someone or something, it's just a way of life. The rivalry begins each year at the Turkey Cup and man that game can get wild. The Turkey Cup has become a tradition between the two teams since it takes place during the week of Thanksgiving and is hyped up since it is the first meeting between the Leafs and Caps of the year. The Arena is jam packed and is so loud you will not be able to hear a pen drop on the floor. Don’t get me wrong, it's not just the Turkey Cup meeting that gets wild, It's all of
them. “HEY HEY WHAT DO YOU SAY???” “LET'S GO LEAFS” Every game will start out with this chant from one lead person and the rest of the fans will join in on the second verse. If you plan on attending a Leafs game you must know this chant. The Leafs play on friday nights and on the weekends so making time to be at games is pretty hard sometimes. But when we go to games, we make an impression. Game days start out with the players dressing up at school or wearing some type of Oak Leafs apparel, while us fans wear hockey jerseys (Preferably Oak Leafs). At our school we have a ledge that is right above the commons (Where everyone hangs out in the morning), and this year for the Turkey Cup we went up there and did our chant. After school we all head up to the arena and have a tailgate outside. We make hot dogs, burgers, brats, and even steaks sometimes; you will eat so much food that you will be so full that you'll feel like you're going to puke. Then as it gets closer to gametime we quickly roll in and grab our seats then be as wild as we can be when it's game time. Being at an Oak Leafs game is not like any other high school sporting event. They may not be as popular and have as many fans but they are definitely as loud and as hype as them.

The typical fan of the Sounds is male and is between the age of 22 and 40. He has a family more often than not and takes them to games with him. He has played baseball at some level, most often, at least, in high school. He first attended a game either as a child or a young adult depending on whether or not he grew up in Nashville. He attends between 5 and 10 games per season and is not a season ticket holder. He does typically enjoy a meal at the ballpark and has purchased souvenirs either for himself or his family. He doesn’t usually have a favorite player or see the Sounds play on the road. He also for the most part does not follow the players in their winter leagues. He has attended at least one major league game in his life and sometimes attends other sporting events in Nashville (Titans or Predators). His favors minor league ball over major league because it is more affordable, there are more activities at the ball park, and it is convenient. He calls himself a fan for two reasons: it is affordable family fun, and he loves baseball.
Ice hockey is a sport that is played and loved all around the world. The hockey culture is like no other. I have firsthand experience with this culture and it’s different from many things. Hockey gets the reputation as a brutal sport with a bunch of goons trying to kill each other, but most people don’t get to see on the other side. Hockey brings people together whether you are a different race, have different beliefs, or a different gender it’s like one big happy family. Ice hockey wasn’t invented or it didn’t have a specific year it began. It all started around the 1800’s in Windsor, where three college students from King’s College, adapted their knowledge of the game field hockey to the ice, where a new winter sport was born. The boys called the game Ice Hurley which later got called to what we know today as Ice Hockey. As the years went by, the game was being played by soldiers across Canada, where it was carried o...
The defining moment of the importance of hockey in Canada was “The Goal of the Century” in 1972. It was the evening of September 28th; the site was Moscow – U.S.S.R. In the midst of the Cold War, a game-winning goal by Canadian hockey player Paul Henderson at the end of the third period with only 34 seconds left on the clock vaulted Canada to a victory at the Summit Series and put them on top of the hockey world. The heart and character of Canadian hockey internationally began. “The exact moment of that spectacular goal has become a reference point in our national collective consciousness.”- R. Eagleson (Foreword). It was the climatic goal watched by almost every Canadian, and their pride swelled to amazing heights. Hockey is more than just a game in Canada, it is a celebrated history. Hockey is Canada’s identity. “Hockey captures the essence of Canadian experience in the New World. In a land so inescapably and inho...
Canada has always had an interest in Hockey. Even before it was widely known, Canadians knew they were missing something. Canada is a northern country which has a lot of ice which made it an ideal place for the sport. Over the years Canada has been recognized throughout the world as having the greatest hockey players. This really helps Canadians with the liking of the sport as Canada does not get very much attention in the world. Let us all face it, what other sport is Canada considered the best at?
High school football is very risky! There are so many ups and downs about this sport in particular. Many people would say it is dangerous for these young boys to play football though others will have a different outlook on it. Football is truly not that dangerous and it can be very helpful for some boys in various ways including, scholarships, personality and a learning experience.
It is considered that football is the most viewed sport in the United States, over 200 million people watch the regular season which consists of 256 games, and about 114 million people watch the Super Bowl alone which is the final game of the season. The National Football League roughly makes over 500 million for a regular season and their players get paid an average of 2.11 million, but that is the NFL.
Wake up in the morning, every morning, before the sun has risen. Hit the gym at five in the morning, before long, head to school, and finally precede back to working out and practicing. This is the exhausting day-to-day life of the majority of college athletes. Athletes that spend countless hours working with the result that they can be the best they can possibly be. At their best they make their school millions and millions of dollars and the maximum they can receive out of it, is a free education. College athletes should receive a stipend to play their sport. There is not much of a difference between keeping a college scholarship and keeping a job in a professional sports team, they bring millions of dollars to their school each year, and
It is a hard-hitting, fast faced and ability testing sport. “For many Canadians hockey is more than a sport – it's a way of life. Hockey parents spend every spare moment shuffling their children to and from the rink for every practice and game. Hockey players spend their entire lives improving stick handling skills, trying to skate with a little more speed, and studying the game with the hope that they can one day glide across the ice in front of throngs of screaming fans” . Hockey is seen as a Canadian symbol and national sport, and many believe has greatly impacted Canadian history, identity and culture.
Controversy strikes as talks of payment to college athletes are on the rise. Recent cases have brought about whether or not the country’s beloved student-athletes should be paid to play. The answer to that question is no, reason being that these “athletes” are students before anything, including a celebrity. College athletes, especially those who play football or basketball, are being compensated more than fairly enough through their scholarships as is. It’s public perceptions that the NCAA and/or the university these students attend are blatantly neglecting them. No, there is simply more to it. Most schools barely come by enough money to pay student-athletes, whether it be basketball, football, baseball, or even tennis and golf.
The fight for women's ice hockey players to earn respect and acceptance has been hard fought over the past one hundred years. Women have constantly been told that they can not play with men and that there sport is a second rate version of the men's game. The road of women's ice hockey has had many ups and downs but has perservered to the present day and is stronger than it has ever been. The future of women's ice hockey is bright thanks to diligence and hard work of those who kept it all going. Ironically women began playing the sport side by side with men over 100 years ago right at the sports inception. One of the oldest action pictures featuring ice hockey shows men playing with women. Part of the reason that women enjoyed early participation with men is because of the way that the public viewed the game. At the start, hockey was seen as a recreational activity. Women have been routinely barred from participating in serious and competitive sport, but if the game is viewed as merely recreational then women are more accepted. In the 1890's this is what happened to the sport of ice hockey. Suddenly the game was more than recreation and organization entered, rules were drawn and leagues were formed. With the new structure came segregation of the sexes. As the sport progressed for the men, the women were left behind. In spite of all this, the first all female organized game was played in Barrie, Ontario in 1892. Women's ice hockey slowly limped on up until the 1920's.
Ping! The sound of a baseball bat rings through the school’s campus. Little do the boys playing baseball know, they are learning important skills while playing ball with their friends. Unfortunately, at the same time they are learning baseball skills, the could be harming their bodies. Students-athletes could be earning friends or earning trips to the hospital. There are positives and negatives to playing on a school sports team.
Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
