Health Insurance is essential to your Personal Well Being and your Health. For a large proportion of uninsured people, health insurance can and is most often a matter of choice. Uninsured Americans normally tend to delay and even go without doctors' visits, prescription medications, and other effective treatments, even if they know they have a serious or life-threatening condition. Institute of Science and Technology (Institute 2009). 20 to 30 percent of uninsured children are more likely to need certain shots, prescription medications, asthma care, basic dental care and other things that we would consider a must have.
As part of the Affordable Care Act, beginning this year Medicaid will expand eligibility to include all uninsured individuals under the age of 65 whose incomes fall at or below 138 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, or about $32,500 for a family of four. However, the 2012 Supreme Court ruling that upheld the law also allowed states more flexibility concerning what parts of the ACA they can implement and said that those same states would not lose federal funding for their existing programs. This result would leave the decision to opt out of the law's provision into the hands of state legislators. While twenty-six states have chosen to expand healthcare coverage, twenty-one states have not and four have yet to make a decision. The state of Florida is among those not seeking to expand coverage and that decision alone could cost Florida millions of dollars a year in tax penalties. As conservative and liberal state lawmakers square off into a maelstrom of debate over whether Medicaid should cover more people, thousands of uninsured Floridians will be caught in the crossfire.
Later, another panel member argued that the purpose of health insurance is not to insure everyone. It should be provided to only cover catastrophic health conditions. Today, not only does health insurance cover catastrophic events, but also there are limits on the amount of out-of-pocket health care costs for essential health care (The White House, 2016). Also, most out-of-pocket costs have been eliminated for preventative care (The White House,
Health insurance is currently an important issue in the United States. Everyday more and more Americans become uninsured due to job loss and an increase in premiums. These Americans add to the ever growing population of 45.7 million people who are currently uninsured (Bialik). Moreover only 27% of those uninsured are under the age of 65 (NCHC). This is staggering considering most of those who are uninsured have, or soon will, suffer from some sort of illness or injury. As a result they will not be able to afford proper treatment. Insurance premiums can range in cost from fifty dollars per month, to fifteen hundred dollars per month (Kreidler). An individual’s premium is determined by factors they choose as well as other factors looked at by their provider. The cost of health insurance in America varies depending on the controllable factors, like particular insurance policies, and uncontrollable factors, like age.
Health insurance comes as second nature to many of us. We grab that blue and white card and put it in our wallet and forget about it until we are sick or injured. When this happens, there it is, cushioning our fall like the extra padding it provided to cushion our wallets. This is not the case with everyone, however. Many Americans have no cushion to fall back on, no blue and white card to show the emergency room when they have an unexpected health concern. No HMO with a convenient co-pay amount when their son or daughter develops an ear infection.
Secondly, health insurance policies are inconsistent, expensive, cumbersome, hard to discern, full of fine print and contain many loopholes. Most Canadians face a huge tax burden, rising cost of living and will not be able to pay for these additional medical expenses out of the pocket. To offload risk, most indiv...
The healthcare reform debate has been politicized in the United States for many years where there have been deliberate efforts by various stakeholders to ensure that they push for the reforms that are in line with the cost-benefit aspects that they have already envisioned. In this paper, I will attempt to prove that the reforms that have been witnessed in the healthcare in the recent years have not been effective and helpful to the society as a whole. When President Obama came into office, he promised to oversee great reforms in the healthcare which is his government he face much priority in the social policy aspects. The congress managed to pass the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).
From the hospital perspective mandating the health insurance will reduce the problem of Free riders into the Hospital and if a person who is insured visits the hospital for the treatment the cost of his medical treatment will not be totally absorbed by the hospital if the person is unable to pay for the treatment and the amount will be shared between the hospital and the insurance company.
However, the reason a lot of these insurance companies are not popular among the general public is because they are new to the insurance game and are often unable to handle processing claims that have become second nature to the giants of the insurance industry. Opponents could also claim the ACA’s out of pocket maximum helps people not get drowned in debt. Sure, maybe the individuals themselves aren’t directly in debt and being spammed with outrageous hospital bills. However, the part of their bills that count toward their out of pocket maximum are sometimes unclear. “Even though things are a lot simpler now, depending on your plan not all services are going to be covered 100% and not all services are always going to count toward your out-of-pocket maximum. Double check that your health plan isn’t cutting any of the corners” (Out-of-Pocket) Opponents may also say that the ACA lowers premiums, but that 2008 statement has become increasingly known as a lie. Obama spent 2008 telling the American people throughout his campaign insurance would be reduced “up to”, “on average”, and “typically” $2,500 “per family, per year”. That turned out to be false and “by some estimates, the average rates in the individual market have increased nearly 25 percent compared to what they would have been without Obamacare, and have increased measurably in 45
Administrative costs and paperwork associated with health insurance have also been reduced, and some persons who currently do not have health insurance have been able to obtain some financial protection.
Health insurance provides benefits for sickness, injury, surgery, and prescription medication. There are a variety of plans with different
Hospital bills are very expensive and for the people that don’t have insurance will be stuck with a huge bill that they more than likely can’t pay and will be put out the hospital as soon as the doctors see fit. They won’t just be able to lay around in a hospital room.
A long time ago, there was no need for health insurance in America, as doctors had many clients because their services were not so expensive and in some cases in rural areas, people could pay by giving other items. Doctors were not as knowledgeable as they are nowadays in caring for the sick, therefore this didn't have much effect then on the patients, as they were treated for the basic illnesses. As progress was made in medicine gradually with new medical technologies which could only be used in the hospitals, doctors started charging more, which was unaffordable for most people, with time, all this started to change as the industrialization of the American economy caused families and people to start relying on services from doctors and the hospitals for treatment. In 1929, a system was created in Dallas, Texas (1) which charged everyone the same. This insurance was to ease the healthcare problem and create a happy scenario for both the doctors and patient, which employers added health to employment packages to boost labor due to shortage after the Second World War.
Health insurance facilitates entry into the health care system. Uninsured people are less likely to receive medical care and more likely to have poor health. Many Americans are foregoing medical care because they cannot afford it, or are struggling to pay their medical bills. “Adults in the US are more likely to go without health care due to cost” (Schoen, Osborn, Squires, Doty, & Pierson, 2010) Many of the currently uninsured or underinsured are forced accept inferior plans with large out-of-pocket costs, or are not be able to afford coverage offered by private health insurers. This lack of adequate coverage makes it difficult for people to get the health care they need and can have a particularly serious impact on a person's health and stability.
