Persuasive Essay On Guns On College Campuses

College campuses are a place for giving away knowledge. They are a place to study but firearms are ruining its silence and peace. They are a toxic to the study environment. Many incidents have taken place in past on college campuses due to firearms and and due to these acts many pro-gun activist has intimated that both professors and students should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus. When it comes to college campuses, then people debate about whether it is right to carry a gun or not. But the debate is actually being whether guns should be allowed on college campuses. The Constitution of The United States of America allows its citizens to carry firearms, but the law has some restrictions. A person is not allowed to carry a concealed weapon in vulnerable place like a college campus. In many states like Florida, Georgia and Arizona, people are allowed to carry a gun in public which is why guns are the leading cause of injuries and deaths. If the government allows guns on campus, then there will be an upsurge in the probability of deaths and injuries by guns. There should be some limitations on carrying a gun. Strict firearm control should be implemented for those who chose to carry a concealed weapon, and gun control should be done by having stricter certification processes before giving away the possession of the firearm like intensive psychological evaluation for the person applying for a

gun permit or a gun, and greater educational requirements for gun owners and firearm safety.
In America is it very easy to obtain a license to own a gun and some states like Georgia allows its citizens to carry a concealed weapon in the public. According to an article “Georgia Gun Laws: In Plain English,” “A citizen does not have to obtain a permit to carry a weapon as long as they are not prohibited from owning the firearm. However, they must have a Georgia Weapons Carry License, that is issued under code 16-11-129 to carry a concealed weapon. The O.C.G.A (The Official Code of Georgia Annotated) 16-11-129 gives the owner of a gun the license to carry a weapon for a period of five years. The only expectations to this are: possession of controlled substance, a felony conviction, no one under the age of 21, a fugitive from justice, or anyone who has had his weapon license revoked in the past.” There are many more allowances to these rules, but there is no rule to check the emotional and psychological state of the person who is buying the gun. Gun shot incidents happen due to the fact that the person shooting is either emotionally or psychologically unstable. Let’s consider an example. A student received grades for his previous test and the student is not happy with the grades. The professor has a legitimate reason not to increase the grades. The student gets emotionally unstable and takes out his gun on the professor and shoots the professor to get “justice.” So, what’s the solution to this incident? Who is to be blamed? Restless emotions and guns are the primary cause of injuries and deaths in gun related incidents. Just because someone is a professor, or someone is a student, it does not warranty that they are emotionally ready to possess a firearm.
Due to increase in gun incidents there should be an obligatory psychological valuation for registered and conceivable gun owners before giving the gun owners license. Let’s focus on some incidents. According to the article “One dead, three injured in Alabama college shooting,” on April 6,2011, a domestic argument at a community college became a huge gun fight leaving behind a dead woman, a dead four-year-old girl who was hit by a flying glass, a dead thirty-six-year college student and injured people. The article stated that all the four victims and the suspect were related. According to an another article “Shooting suspect on Tennessee university campus captured,” on February 14, 2011, a dispute led to sealing of Tennessee State University. The article reported that the police had to lock down the entire university and search nearly 25,000 student and faculty body for the assailant. This incident clearly stated that the entities involved in these incidents were not emotionally ready to possess firearm. The father of Psychology, Sigmund Freud established the standards of emotional development as the ability to work and love. William C. Menninger, of the The Psychological Center stated that, “Emotional maturity should also include those entities who also have the ability to deal practically with realism, alter to changes in their environment, have the competence to find gratification in giving rather than accepting, and have the ability to direct any hostile energy into creative outlets.” This simply states that those people who don’t have mental stability should not be allowed to have guns.
But, people state that they need to buy firearms due to their own safety. Many people start buying firearms for their own safety or their family’s safety. But human behaviour urges these people to show-off. These people show-offs their weapons to their friends and relatives. But they do not have any idea of what can be the repercussions. They can accidently fire at their relative or their friend. According to an article, “Why own a gun? Protection is now top reason,” 48% of the population has guns for their protection. A person can have good intentions to buy the gun, but if the person is not emotionally and psychologically stable, the person is really dangerous to the society. Jim Sutherland, a blogger on the website "The Truth About Guns" feels that, “Mandatory gun training and education would benefit, not only gun owners, but also those who do not own guns.” He believes that if mandatory gun training is provided to a convenience store clerk then he or she might have a fighting chance at defending himself or herself against an armed robber. Sutherland states that, “A well-trained gun owner would have a racer's edge in a situation where bullets are flying with reckless abandonment.” Only after going through a comprehensive training course, would it then be remotely safe for firearms to be permitted on college campuses to restricted zones and under authoritarian controls.
In America, buying a gun is as simple as buying vegetables.

It is a right given by the Constitution, but it is not an absolute right. It has restrictions due to protection of citizens. There is no doubt that more restrictions are required for gun owners when buying guns like background check, mental and psychological tests and gun training on how to operate the gun in different situations. But, guns should not be allowed on college campuses. Improvement in gun training and firearm ownership will make people who don’t own a firearm more

relaxed.
