Guns are viewed as sacred symbol, as it should be, as they took a significant role in America gaining its independence. Gun ownership is very common in the United States. According to recent reports, there is enough nonmilitary guns in the country to arm every man, woman, and child, with a few million weapons left over (Keidan, 2014). With so many guns in our nation, they affect many different aspects of our lives. Some think they affect life in a positive way and that we should have the right but at the same time, the other side of the debate, they say that we need more gun control. There has been innumerous cases about individuals wanting to own a gun and not being allowed to. The supreme court case of District of Columbia v. Heller held that the Second Amendment protects an individual the right to bear arms for self-defense, and that a citywide ban on handguns in the District of Columbia was a constitutional infringement of that right. District of Columbia v. Heller’s contribution helped establish that the Second Amendment is not limited to militia connected people or arms as had been the previous notion. Most Americans came to believe that the Second Amendment protects an individual right. It was expected that in the wake of Heller, gun control laws across the country would be under threat but it appears that relatively few laws have been struck down by the new Second Amendment grounds since Heller. One reason for this is probably the fact that the most common federal gun control laws ban dangerous and unusual weapons. Most laws that have been struck down have been unusually strict. Gun laws control the types of firearms that may be purchased, designate the qualifications of those who may purchase and own a firearm, and restrict the safe storage and use of firearms. Advocates for gun control laws argue that with these laws in place the incidence of violent crimes are reduced because the prevalence of firearms is reduced or in other words fewer guns mean less crime. But this only holds some truth because the relationship between gun control and crime rates don’t effect each other immediately. A law that is put into place won’t see any effect crime rates until a few years down the road. A study taken in the 1997, found that the right-to-carry laws reduce violent crime rates. The reductions are greater in counties with proportionally higher urban populations and the laws afford relatively greater protection to minorities and women. The study also shows that criminals substitute non confrontation crimes such as burglary, auto theft, and larceny, for violent crimes such as robbery and assault (Moorhouse et al., 2006). Thirty five states now permit law abiding residents to carry a concealed weapon (Malcom and L., 2003). With concealed weapons laws in place, the probability of a criminal coming to a confrontation with an armed citizen has increased. As such, right-to-carry laws
