Debunking the Myth: Gun Restrictions and Other Death Causes

Along with many other reasons, guns do not need any more restrictions. No one seems to be taking into account all of the other means of deaths and the death tolls of those actions. Many of the murders in the United States are committed with a variety of resources such as hammers and clubs, drugs, and even vehicles. According the FBI crime files, in 2006 the amount of deaths executed with clubs and hammers were 618, meanwhile the amount of murders rifles were used in was only 438 (Hawkins, “FBI: More People killed…”). This clearly portrays that rifles are not as much of a problem as it may seem. It shows that something so simplistic and common can cause more deaths than a sophisticated rifle. Meanwhile, there are many individuals that will do anything to obtain the drugs any way possible, legal or illegal, thus constituting a law will not stop them. If these people have the intent to cause harm to themselves or others they most likely will neglect the laws that forbid these actions. This way of thinking is similar to that of criminals when concerning gun control. The criminals don 't have an issue breaking the law in the first place; therefore, placing limitations on gun possession only will hurt the ones who need protection most. In 2013, it was recorded that, 99.4% of fatalities by automobile were accidental; however, the same study revealed that the amount of accidental deaths by gun was a mere 1.5% (Lott, “What Is More Likely…”). Hence, it would seem logical that more laws need to be put in place as to who owns a vehicle since they are responsible for an innumerous amount of deaths annually, not who owns a concealed weapon. Because of this man’s actions, many lives were saved. Without having guns in the hands of responsible citizens, many more incidents such as this one could take place. As it has since been stated earlier, gun control is not mandating the removal of guns from the hands of law-abiding citizens, but teaching the proper ways to store, manage, and use a gun responsibly. In America, restricting the ownership of guns to citizens should be prohibited. Although there are many people who oppose private ownership of firearms, what they don 't realize is that firearms can also protect their lives. When guns are in the hands of responsible individuals, they can benefit their own lives as well as the lives of those who cannot protect themselves or for just recreational purposes. However, there are many deaths caused by guns, but the amount of deaths prevented with gun use outweighs them tremendously. Also, the smart gun and training courses could prevent many of these deaths. “Nearly two million more crimes are prevented with guns than are ‘caused’ by guns” (Connell). Ultimately, guns in America have a huge impact on our life and many benefits are overlooked.
