Going to school is something that children do at a young age. The idea of school is ingrained into children at as early as six weeks of age in a daycare. As the child grows older they enter elementary school, middle school, and then high school. Within the schools there are students, administrative staff, nurses, volunteers, and of course teachers. Then questions are asked. What really is the purpose of school? How can a teacher gain student’s attention when they are thinking about things outside of school? How are the students different from one another? What determines between a good and bad teacher? How can character be successfully be integrated into schools? These are a few questions that were addressed in the book You Can’t Teach Through …show more content…
However, Berkowitz did just that. In a perfect world school is somewhere that is fun, full of students and coworkers that get along with each other, and a place where children feel happy. On the other hand, students today are feeling the complete opposite. In today’s school students claim to feel as if they are prisoners not having a say in anything that takes place throughout the school day. Unfortunately as a student, I can see where the students are coming from and this perspective of school needs to make a turn for the better. I think that this is an important issue going on in the schools in America right now that needs to be addressed. If students are supposed to grow up and be independent individuals, then why are educators making all the choices for the students? Students are told where to sit in a classroom with assigning seating going through high school. I understand giving a seating chart to elementary students; however, students who are in high school and even middle school need to learn how to make choices. Teachers need to allow the students to sit where they want and if they are too distracted by friends the student needs to use their own judgment to change seats. This is how children are going to learn how to make choices on their own. In my opinion another aspect that needs to be stopped to create less of a prison setting and more of a learning environment is an idea that was also …show more content…
In today’s schools I think the method of teaching character is not addressed appropriately. I do not believe the way that schools I have attended and observed are teaching character in a manner that will promote a lasting impact on the students. What I have experienced is exactly what Berkowitz says not to do when teaching character; posters, worksheets, and morning definitions by students of what character means to them. Practically in the high school I attended they painted a wall about character. The students are not going to change or learn how to show character by these methods. I think it is important for today’s teachers and future teachers to realize how to promote character to students so that the students can carry it with them their whole lives. Berkowitz suggests a few techniques to do when trying to create students with positive character. Some of the ideas include building stong heathy relationships and being a positive role model for students. My critique of Berkowitz’s work about character is that I fully agree with his thoughts. Being a student who graduated high school from a National School of Character I believe that the school systems do have the idea of how to create a school full of positive character is not being addressed appropriately. I hope that administration staff and educators within the school districts get a hold of Berkowitz’s work to enhance their character education
In the article “Against School”, John Taylor Gatto urges Americans to see the school system as it really is: testing facilities for young minds, with teachers who are pounding into student 's brains what society wants. Gatto first explains that he taught for 30 years at the best and worst schools in Manhattan. He claims to have firsthand experience of the boredom that students and teachers struggle with. Gatto believes that schooling is not necessary, and there are many successful people that were self-educated. He then explains the history and importance of mandatory schooling.
We live in a society where we are surrounded by people telling us that school/education and being educated is the only way to succeed. However, the school system is not up to the standards we want it to uphold. There are three issues we discuss the most which are the government, the student, and the teacher. In John Taylor Gatto 's essay “Against School”, we see the inside perspective of the educational system from the view of a teacher. In “I Just Wanna Be Average”, an essay written by Mike Rose, we hear a student 's experience of being in a vocational class in the lower level class in the educational system when he was supposed to be in the higher class. Both Gatto and Rose give their opinions on how the educational system is falling apart. Today the government is only trying to get students to pass, making it hard for teachers to teach what they want. Students are affected everyday by the school system. They sit there - bored - and do not think that the teachers care, making the
Schools are the basic foundation of knowledge, which is imparted to children. They give a chance for children to gain knowledge in various fields such as humanity, literature, history, mathematics and science. By obtaining knowledge, they are in a better position to know the world around them. A school is a society where faith and other values are developed. Schools also play an important role in a democratic social set up. Students of today are the citizens of tomorrow. Schools are the backbone of a society, where children interact with other children and develop certain social skills. Education in schools opens doors to various opportunities that would not be possible if it had not been for the knowledge one gained at school. However, in the articles, “Idiot Nation” by Michael Moore and “Against School” by John Taylor Gatto, the authors express their concerns about the degrading quality of education. There are many problems the education system is facing today, and several of them are having negative effects on the quality of the education that the students are receiving which are highlighted aptly by the effective use of rhetorical strategies by Moore and Gatto.

The education system has been changing in recent years and the same problems that existed continue to get worse as years pass. Problems that were seen as minor at first have now grown. How to change the public higher education system has been a major topic of discussion but there has still been no major action taken. We struggle to figure out how much funding is needed for higher education and where it should come from. Our people continue to suffer from an underfunded high cost system. The wealthy minority of people continue to be the only ones accounted for and it is time to change this. We need to adapt to the changes and the costs that continue to rise. It is time to help the struggling middle and lower classes. I believe that the best
School is something we all know and understand. Regardless of whether we wanted it or not, we have all passed through school. School is, first and foremost, a place designed for people to go and learn. It is a place to better yourself, to learn facts, discipline, to learn social and economic skills. But for all that school is intended for, people go for different reasons. Some are hardworking and academically minded, they go to learn, to set a good foundation for their future, with an aim of becoming successful and accomplished in their career. Others are carefree, going for the social side, to be popular, have lots of friends, and in the end just to have a good time. For others it can even be a place of safety, a place where they can get
Home school education has been growing exponentially in America over the past couple decades as more and more families are deciding to cultivate their kids’ educations in a more personalized fashion. Parents choose to home school their children for a large variety of reasons. The most popular reasons for this decision include dissatisfaction with the current education system, religious freedom in education, and personalized education for certain skillsets. Home school educations grew in popularity as the Internet became more prevalent in culture. The Internet allowed parents to access more educational materials from home and communicate with other home school families across the globe. Home school has had an impact on the identities of students
College education goes about the way to an effective future for people who are not kidding with it. Currently, a college education has turned in the base necessity in securing a job in different companies and although some people might think college is not worth the debt, in a long run it actually is.
A lot of people don’t know that they have to do more with their education and get a good paying job. If you are declined a job that you know you will enjoy, but don 't have the college papers for a job can get disappointing. Some people are not inspired to go to college, and others can’t afford it. Other issues involved with the skills gap for jobs is the high requirements for that area of work, and peoples soft skills. High school is supposed to help you plan you for the real world, but not many classes help teach you the real world. This forms the skills gap in America, this stops people from being able to progress in today’s community.
Over the past few decades, the need for character education programs in United States’ schools has been widely debated and become increasingly popular particularly at the elementary level. Several states, including California, mandate that schools in some way focus on the social and emotional development of students through character education (USDE, 2011). According to legislation in the state of California, all California teachers are supplied with a character education manual with the expectation that each teacher impress the qualities of good character u...
The point here is to help people understand the difference between what is right and wrong, good and bad, and to use those “good” values throughout their lives. In schools using character education, intentional, proactive, and comprehensive approaches are used to follow the values of good character. The intentional and proactive approach try to develop character, and the comprehensive approach uses every feature of schooling. For example, it would use the environment in and surrounding the school to try and build character. It would also make sure that the bus driver for the school bus is in good standing.
Viadero explains how character education is making progress and showing evidence that it is effective and beneficial to school programs.
Teens today face a lot of pressure. Many students deal with difficult life situations that hinder them from focusing on their futures. This can lead to a loss of interest in school and school events, such as a sports, clubs, or after school programs. Teens start to prioritize other things over their education. Every year, over 1.2 million students will leave school without earning a high school diploma in the United States alone (“11”). That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day (“11”). The United States, which used to have the highest graduation rates of any country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries (“11”). Students may not realize that by dropping out of high school they are more likely to commit crimes, become parents at a young age, use and abuse alcohol and drugs, and live in poverty (“Drop”). Dropouts make up the majority of those
Education is one of the most important aspects of our society. By educating Americas youth we are molding the minds who are going to run and find new solutions to the problems are country faces today and for the future. However education, in general, is facing some serious problems. One of the most important aspects in running anything, including a school, is finances. If a school does not have adequate funding, the students will not be able to learn and grow to achieve their goals. The problem schools across the country and in particular Ohio is facing is, what is the best way to fund public school? There are many aspects that go into the funding of school but the question is being raised, do we need to change the way we go about funding our
Having explained the reason most children have become disheartened at the thought of school, I now turn my attention to the students who do realize school’s educational value. These are the students that will continue to prosper throughout their lives because they realize the extreme importance of education. There is a secret, yet not so secret, motivation behind their determination to exceed standards and expectations in school. The secret they withhold is their overwhelming desire to be successful in the future.
