“Significant cuts to programs and services were unavoidable. They include a reducing the number of assistant principals, and in some cases, teachers, student support services like counselors and specialists, nurses, afterschool programs, and outoftown student travel sports events” (Irish). The loss of extracurricular activities is just one of the many things that schools need to cut due to the low educational funding. If funding continues to be cut then Arizona will not have the tools needed in order to give the knowledge they need to succeed in life. Solutions are needed in order to boost the funding for education in Arizona, and to give students the best learning experience so they can have a successful future. In 2009 Arizona 's spending …show more content…
Extracurricular activities are a crucial part of school because it shows you are involved into making your school the best it can be, but students can not do so if there is no funding for extracurricular activities. Furthermore, extracurricular activities can help students with their path to college, as many colleges take into consideration these activities when a student applies. Most importantly everyone working in the school are breathing in mildew. This could lead to allergies, asthma, and possibly infections in teachers, students, and maintenance. Schools need to be rebuilt or be fixed in some areas to create, and maintain a safe and healthy learning environment. If the problem is not solved budget cuts will continue and public schools will start shutting down until there’s nothing left but charter schools. This is a huge problem as not everyone will be pleased with this, as parents want their sons and daughters to get a good education. The people that have the power to resolve Arizona’s education funding is the Governor of Arizona Doug Ducey. Doug Ducey has the ability to pass a state law that will prevent the education funding to be cut, and even
Parents want the best for their children, no question, and the highest educational standards will be something that parents have on the top of their list. There is enough support to say that people who have received better education have gotten further in life. Even our president Barack Obama has spoken about how important it is to make sure the children are being educated to their fullest. Learning the ability of critical thinking and problem-solving gives way towards national prosperity. (Bok, Higher Education) It is easy to see that there is a strong urge to get the best education you can receive for a reason. Education is and will always be an important factor within our society.
How will this growing problem be fixed, not only in the United States but the world as well? One important action is to continue the effort to improve schools worldwide. Schools in poorer areas of districts would benefit from a greater number of better trained teachers and faculty. Other actions to help improve schools would be to add more leadership and extracurricular activities, encourage students to focus and stay in school, and making things such as school lunch and recess better. It is important to have students enjoy being at school and enjoy learning, otherwise they'll lose intere...
(Bruenig). This is because students from well-off families already enjoy a disproportionately successful future than students from poor families, State budgets could become strained, which might lead to cuts and decreased access to programs that students want to take. Budget cuts may also need to take place, or pulling from other departments to make up for the loss of tuition. These could come from high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools. This could result in many teachers, administrators, and other school district employees losing their jobs due to schools needing to save money.
For this reason it is essential to eliminate funding inequalities all students deserve a high quality education especially in the low-income areas. Providing more money to these areas can reduce crime and gang activity, lower the teen birth rate, restore self-confidence, provide these students and opportunity to attend college, also break the cycle of poverty. The President “Race to the Top Program” is a start but more need to be done from the local and state level.
My greatest concern that schools face with ELL’s students is not having the expertise or tools to help our ELL’s, but the lack of funding that is provided by the state of Colorado. I know lack of funding in education is not a new problem. However, this panel of ELD experts did express how expensive this program is to properly run in order to educate our ELL’s. Our local school districts appear to be successful in using the resources that is available to them. However, the statistics we were
When there are less kids, there is a greater opportunity for kids to be involved. They can be in several sports, performing arts, or any group they desire. I was involved in volleyball, football managing, basketball, track, cheerleading, softball, choir, and student council. I was always busy with projects or practices “promotes an overall feeling of unity and social solidarity (Schaefer 2016:18). Activities and “sports serve as a safety value for other participants and spectators, who are allowed to shed tension and aggressive energy in a socially acceptable way” (Schaefer 2016:18). At big schools, not every kids has a chance to be involved and so they have to get their anger out some other way, which can lead to bad things. Since I have been involved in many activities and had ways to relieve my anger I do not need another way; therefore, I have not gotten into bad situations. I am satisfied that I haven’t missed out on an activity that I have wanted to do because of my school. Sadly, this does not happen in all schools. Many large schools do not give the students the same chances because there is more competition. At these schools, kids have to compete to be on an extracurricular team. They really have to specialize in the organization or else they do not have the opportunity to be a part of the activity. Many have to specialize in this extracurricular activity
President John F Kennedy once said “children are the world’s most valuable resource and it best hope for the future”. When people speak of the future they imagine a time where the all of the world’s problems are solved and everyone is kind to each other and happy. If we want this future to be possible then as Kennedy stated the children are the key. We need our children to be well educated so they can grow up to be the future leaders we need to change the world. Unfortunately with the two education systems that have been educating this nation’s children for the past fourteen years have not been doing an adequate job. The No Child Left Behind Act and the Common Core standards both have fragments that work to benefit students and help them develop
Proper school funding is one of the keys to having a successful school. Americans believe that funding is the biggest problem in public schools. School improvements revolve around funding. There needs to be funding not only in the successful schools but also the schools that aren’t doing as well. In documentary, Waiting for Superman, it talks about how smaller class sizes will help students. Funding is what will help the smaller class sizes. State funding mechanisms are subject to intense political and economic scrutiny (Leonard). Studies have shown that funding is inversely related to accreditation levels (Leonard). School funding needs to be increased, but there must be accountability as well.
...ed. The state can only go so far, the rest is up to better education from a young age.
Just about every high school in the United States provides students with the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, volunteering, music, academic or interest clubs, and student government . The question arising is whether low income students are less likely to participate in these extracurricular activities. Understanding the causes and reasons behind the significantly lower amount of extracurricular activity participation among low socioeconomic students incites a systematic approach to a solution. If impoverished students are unequally participating in extracurricular activities compared to high-income students, than they are also deprived of the procured benefits such as leadership experiences and social
Governor Walker and his supporters claim that, rather than hurting Wisconsin’s school system, the budget cuts actually help by making schools be more careful and efficient with their use of money, and they say that spending more money on education will not actually improve it. For example, when budget cuts in Colorado forced some schools to rethink their spending, they switched to several more efficient teaching practices, the most original of which being a four day school week (Schouten 1). The four day school week allowed some districts to save up to $65,000 a year in transportation costs, such as the Maccray School District in Minnesota (Coleman, Walker & Lawrence 5). These newer teaching practices not only saved money on buses and other
Teaching is much more than just work inside of a classroom; it is our job as a teacher to get to know our students, on a personal level, inside and out of school. An excellent way to perform this task is through extracurricular activities within the school corporation. Throughout this expectation, I will demonstrate how my knowledge, and participation, in extracurricular activities has bettered my student relationships, and thus bettered my teaching.
Do extra-curricular activities have a positive or negative effect on a student’s academic performance? If they do, then why do schools take activities away from students at the first sign of academic troubles? If they are scientifically proven to be positive, then why are they not curricular rather than extra curricular? There are numerous influences that impact the academic performance of a student other than after school activities. However, this study will focus on the effect of extra curricular activities on academic performances. In many cases, participation in extra curricular activities positively influences attendance and connection to school. This study will investigate the impact of extra curricular activities that require a daily commitment over an extended period of time, greater than a month. Athletics is the dominant after school activity that requires a daily commitment; therefore, this study will involve student athletes as well as students who are involved in other extra curricular activities. Another reason why student athletes will be a large part of this study is that there may be a correlation between the skills necessary to succeed in athletics and academics (American Sports Institute, 1991).
Are extra-curricular and co-curricular activities needed in a school environment? Do they serve any purpose in the learning spectrum of school? Many individuals believe school is a place strictly for learning, nothing more. Yet, they have an abundance of different sports and activities offered. These activities are financed by public schools and are offered as something else to engage in. Although others do not agree, learning is affected by extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, such as music, in a positive way. Music programs can give students’ meaning, involvement, create positive feelings, give new opportunities, increase students’ community engagement, and can also improve students’ academic achievements. “For years the music education
