Eating is one thing that everyone has in common, no matter what age or race, and food is needed to survive. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are times for people to enjoy. Families have dinner together, friends go out to eat, and boyfriends take their girlfriends to fancy restaurants. Eating is something people do not think about as a freedom, but it is in fact. Just like any other freedom. There is that slim chance that it could be taken away. The government would control what people are all ate for not only breakfast, but lunch and dinner! Every meal is censored or regulated. The grocery store never sells those delicious Oreo cookies anymore. No more cake for the next birthday party! The article stated, “The government has no right, opponents contend, to curtail the food industry’s freedom and consumer choice, through measures like calorie posting requirements and soda taxes” ("Diet and Obesity" par. 9). I strongly agree. Just like it is stated in the Constitution, Americans have a list of rights. The freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly, and the freedom of petition are a few examples. Does the freedom to eat need to be included? No, because citizens already have the right to choose what they want to eat. There are no laws that say people have to eat a specific kind of food. What people are allowed to eat should be left as a personal decision. If someone chooses to eat unhealthy, they can either choose to be fat or exercise and maintain good health. Eating habits are very important, how people control their eating habits is what causes obesity. Also, the lack of physical activity could lead to overweight problems. If the government was to control the food Americans consume, because of the fear of the United States becoming fat, there would be no promise of obesity disappearing. When people eat too much and do not exercise, that is where weight is gained. Let’s say the government put a ban on soda, in hopes of reducing the number of obese people, and companies were only allowed to sell sixteen ounce cups. Yes it may cut back on the number of people purchasing 32 ounce sodas, but who is to say that someone will not just fill up two 16 ounce cups and have 32 ounces of soda that way? If someone is that desperate, they will go to the extreme to have what they want. Obesity will never go away and the government should be focusing on more realistic
Radley Balko, The author of the essay “What You Eat is Your Business”, would agree that in order to stop obesity, we must turn this public problem around and make it everyone’s individual responsibility. Instead of inflicting the importance of personal ownership, government officials, politicians and congress make obesity a public problem by prohibiting junk food in school vending machines, federal funding for new bike trails and sidewalks, and restrictive food marketing to children. Overall I agree that this manipulation of food options is not the proper way to fight obesity, however, I think that government should inform people about the food they are eating because then they have no excuses for not taking responsibility of the actions.
Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. In the article “What You Eat Is Your Business”, the author claims, Americans need to be more responsible for their own health and the government should not become involved (Balko). I argue this point; the American people have been tempted into buying foods that are unhealthy, cheap, and convenient, and we cannot be responsible when foods like this are so easy and available to purchase. We are also one of the fattest nations in the world. He conveys in the article that we should have some sort of responsibility for what we put into our own body (Balko), but I feel that with all of the tempting foods being right at our fingertips, we are getting fatter and fatter. When we turn on the television at night, and every fifteen minutes a food commercial comes on. When we go to school, there are vending machines in every building. Nobody offers water anymore with our meals; it costs extra just to get a cup for water with a meal.

It is sad. People from all races and backgrounds are obese. In a recent survey done at Henry Ford College, 43 percent of students were overweight. Whether it is because they do not follow a healthy diet or they inherited it from their parents. Being overweight is correlated with lacking exercise or physical activity and not watching what is on the plate. Obesity can cause many illnesses, including diabetes, which is very common. As the debate whether soda tax should take effect arises, critics say that the tax will help those with obesity-related illnesses. What about exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle? These two factors cannot be forgotten knowing they are the most important. Americans have consumed 12 percent of soda and become less active since 1970. A soda tax aims to stop consumers from buying soda to help those who are obese. This will not be effective. Therefore a soda tax will not be good public policy.
