Passing this law might help to decrease deaths and make motorists mindful of the consequences of driving while being under the influence of alcohol.
First and most important, placing an automatic one-year suspension upon first offense, could potentially save the lives of those involved in car accidents with an intoxicated driver. The potential for fatal accidents while driving under the influence of alcohol is high, so driving intoxicated should not be taken lightly. They are not only

putting themselves at risk, but also their family members or friends they have in the car accompanying them, along with all the people they are sharing the road with.

Knowing that they will lose their license for a year will make everyone warier about driving drunk. Considering that not everyone takes heed of the law, having this requirement also means that at a minimum, dangerous drivers will be disabled from the roads for a year.
There are those that may not agree with this opinion. Some people may believe that getting their driver license suspended for your first conviction of driving drunk is not fair because they will not be able to go to work or school. Some may argue that the cost associated with getting convicted of drinking and driving alone would suffice to not add the loss of their driver’s license for a year. Others may believe that everyone deserves a second opportunity or that losing their license on the first offense would be too harsh. Many may view this consequence to be better suited for the second

offense.
These arguments can be easily rebutted. There are many other ways to move around without having to drive, such as utilizing public transportation or riding a bicycle. Even though the initial and residual cost of getting convicted of drinking and driving is high, the cost of losing a loved one does not have monetary and does not compare. Due to the nature of this offense and the potentially catastrophic outcomes, the arguments for a second chance or that this consequence is better suited for the second offense are unfounded. Therefore, taking their license away for a year will make them more cautious about risking many innocent lives.
Driving under the influence of alcohol affects anyone judgments skills, putting themselves and others in danger. Any amount of alcohol in someone’s bloodstream can impact their ability to drive. For the safety of everyone who shares the road, it is vital to impose sturdier laws in order to prevent fatalities as well as having responsible drivers.
