Disciplining one’s child is a controversial topic in that many new opinions and stances formulate each year. Not one parent disciplines their child the same as another. Each parent may have their own unique technique to discipline their child such as taking away a toy. What parents do have in common when it comes to disciplining a child is the outcome. Parents believe disciplining will result in the child not performing the unwanted action again. Parents typically have a set of guidelines that they discuss with their child. If children break on one of the guidelines, the result is disciplinary action. Throughout the article, Fitter states his opinion often. For example, Fitter states, “When calm and rational, no one would argue that children are different from adults (Fitter).” This statement is an opinion because someone can argue that children are different from adults. Fitter also states many facts in the article. He uses a study to explain how parents have changed their mind about spanking their child because of being shown evidence that spanking results in negative effects on children (Fitter). There is no link or reference to show the source of the facts from the study. The website article does have a bias in that Fitter believes discipline is better than punishment. The article contains “five reasons why discipline is better than punishment”. A few of the five reasons include punishment is about overreacting and punishing doesn’t teach lessons (Fitter). There are many phrases that Fitter puts throughout the article that plays with my emotions. These phrases are questions asked to induce the reader to think deeper about what Fitter is trying to bring across. For example, when Fitter asks while discussing how punishing a child does not teach them a lesson, “What specific “lesson” does a yanked and twisted arm teach?”, it makes me think back to how my parents disciplined me (Fitter). It reminds myself how I felt when my parents would yank me by the arm. It allows the reader to recollect on their personal …show more content…

Of the one link provided in the article, it is working perfectly (Parker-Pope). The information does not need to be current for this specific assignment. Many of the topics discussed in the article have common information that is still relevant to present day. On the other hand, some of the outdated studies could have different outcomes and results today than it did 9 years. For example, one of the studies discussed the variety of disciplinary actions parents used based on the disciplinary actions enacted on themselves as young children. The study stated, “Forty-five percent reported using time-outs, 41.5 percent said they removed privileges, 13 percent reported yelling at their children and 8.5 percent said they used spanking “often or always”. These statistics could change over the time course of 8 years which could result in different percentages
