What is important to understand about bullying in schools, is that it affects people of all walks of life regardless of their background. There many individuals who experience bullying, but are unable to give their account on just how difficult these experiences may be. Some of their accounts are pretty disturbing and will make you wonder what makes an individual or group of people harass and bullying someone else. Is there really anything someone can say to justify these actions? no there isn 't. What can be said is that bullying has become a social problem that public-figures now are resorting to using their social status and influence to bring attention to this controversial topic. Many of these public-figures tell tales of previous experiences …show more content…
went on Facebook and mocked her in death." They are even said to have held a dance celebrating her death. "Springfield TV stations sent a crew to South Hadley High to talk to the kids. One girl who was interviewed on camera said... that bullies were stalking the corridors of South Hadley High." Later on, that student was attacked by one of those mean girls. These bullies are attractive, popular, and are well known in their school. "So far, they appear to be untouchable, too. What kind of message does this send to the good kids?’’ one parent Darby O’Brien stated and said, “How many kids haven’t come forward to tell what they know because they see the bullies walking around untouched?’’, ("The untouchable Mean Girls..."). In this instance a tragedy occurred. The victim in this case will never get a opportunity to see another day or tell her story. In this instance and many other victims are either too afraid to tell their story or unaware of what they can do get out of this situation. Unfortunately bullying can get so bad that many choose to harm themselves, harm others ( people involved in bullying them) and even commit suicide. Bullying is unpredictable especially, for adolescents dealing with it in schools, among their peers. Preventive measures should be taken to eliminate it out of schools and society, so victims can move forward with their
Bullying is hard to pin point exactly why it starts and for what reason. It can be as something small or big in which the person is not able to understand why it’s happening to them. Psychological, personal and professional destruction is happening to the person and they don’t understand why. The behavior one person is doing to another can cause the person to either quit or get fired because of it.How does the person know they will be targeted and be bullied in their own work environment. Bullying causes people to feel anxious, agitation and false accusations that leads to stress. Harming the person’s wellbeing such as their health. The employers and the workers can both be considered to play a role in preventing or to be able to stop bullying.
As a society, we often underestimate the damages that bullying cause on children, not just America but all over, and the ones who suffer are the victims themselves. Victims are damaged with the stigma that they are weak, yet somehow have to fend for themselves against something that they have little to no control over. Whether it is for funding, a reputation or any other reason schools sweep their bullying problem under the rug or turn a blind eye, however they have more potential to end this growing issue. To the schools that think bullying is not their problem, they should know that according to heyugly.org, an anti-bullying campaign, “Approximately, 160,000 children a day stay home from school in fear of being bullied.”They also point out
Everyone has been bullied or encountered someone being bullied at some point of their life. Whether it would be physically or verbally both can be exceedingly traumatizing and can have a long-term psychological influence on children’s development. Majority people may define bullying in a more physical term; nevertheless that’s not always the case. The act of bullying can occur in several ways and in reality affect the individual in the same way. Bullying is generally defined as repeated, negative, and harmful actions focused at target throughout a course of time, exhibiting a sense of power difference between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993; Limber & Mihalic, 1999 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). A survey was conducted in the United States estimating that over six million children, about 30% in grade six through ten have experienced frequent bullying in a school environment (Nansel, 2001 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). Many people might debate that bullying is something that every child goes through and is simply a part of growing up, although there are several damaging consequences that happens to the child’s brain. Bullying causes the child to feel upset, isolated, frightened, anxious, and depressed. They feel like they reason they are being picked on is because there is something wrong with them and may even lose their confidence feel unsafe going to school (Frenette, 2013 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005) Anthropologically, sociologically, or psychologically, bullying can be analyzed through different perspectives and several questions can be asked based on the topic:
For high school students bullying and harassment can make a time of learning and new social interactions a nightmare. The possibility of being physically or verbally bullied at school,, a place where student should feel safe, is a growing peril. Unfortunately, bullying is nothing new in the United States. As well as the problem of avoiding being a victim of bullying at school, students can not escape this harsh scrutiny because of the rise of social media networks. Teenagers are being harassed on social media at alarming rates and a majority of school can do nothing about it. To understand the role social media has in the battle to prevent harassment and cyberbullying, it is essential that people identify the roles schools and students play in these situations.
On the afternoon of April 9, 2010 I found myself in a meeting with Kerri Evans, the assistant principal of Pleasant Ridge Middle School, and my son Nicholas. I was there because my son had become a victim of verbal abuse. It was shocking to learn that bullying has become such an epidemic in our school system. “Nearly 1 in 3 students is involved in bullying” (Hertzog, 2010). In a perfect world there would be no bullying. Kids wouldn’t get shoved into lockers, and they wouldn’t be beat up in the hallway. Students wouldn’t talk about another student behind their back because of their shape, size, race, or religion. In a perfect world this wouldn’t happen, but at that moment in our imperfect world it was happening to my son. The question is, why does it happen and what can we do to stop it? “According to a 2009 federal survey of school crime and safety, 32 percent of middle and high school students said they'd been victimized during the academic year, compared with 14 percent in 2001” (Tyre, 2010). Bullying was making its way into my home and affecting my life. It was then that I realized that bullying was a problem that needed to stop. Bullying in schools is escalating and becoming a bigger and bigger issue, and we must take action to eliminate it.
The internet provides an opportunity unlike any our ancestors ever experienced. We are able to connect – instantly – with people of all ages, genders, and races, all across the globe. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram allow users to send images and text posts to their friends or to the public, that is, anyone on the internet who happens upon their post or cares to run a simple search for it or for the user. This provides many incredible opportunities for artists to share and get feedback on their creations, and to make money. People who are not artists can converse with others from all over the world and potentially develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and therefore a greater tolerance of people unlike them.
Bullying against teens is still happening even though there are various awareness programs to try to prevent it. I want to create awareness of bullying against teens of all religions, race, and sexual orientation. Even with the various attention to bullying, the problem still persists despite the school providing awareness, students are still afraid to say anything. Societal patterns today make bullying a difficult issue to eliminate. Starting in 2007, a total of 35 states made laws to go against bullying at school. These laws consisted of a clear definition of bullying, and how schools will be required to enforce uniform standards of conduct. The reason bullying comes as such an issue to me is because I actually know friends that have been suicidal and have caused themselves harm due to being bullied every day, in school and at home.
Bullying has been an issue for as long as one can remember. Bullying is a serious yet sensitive topic. Bullying has caused students to not only kill themselves but take the life of innocent students and teachers. Remember The Virginia Tech Massacre? Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people that included students and teachers.
Have you ever been bullied and felt hopeless? In home, school, offices, and community, some people are experiencing bullying. Because of our concern
Bullying of students in school is an abuse that affects and produces a number of negative experiences on the victim. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past. I have been bullied before and I know some of the effects it could have on a person. Bullying is a serious cause of many issues and has effects that may be long lasting.
There is a little girl crying in the corner because someone called her fat; there is a boy who pretends to smile in front of others, but instead he is hurting on the inside because someone made him feel less of himself. These children and teenagers being hurt emotionally occur in many schools. This action is known as bullying. Bullying is the act of physically or verbally abusing someone to intentionally hurt someone’s self-esteem or to make others feel intimidated. While bullying is recognized worldwide, many individuals such as adults or teachers are unaware of when students are being bullied. The common misconception about bullying is that individuals bully others because they want to. However, there are specific reasons that explain the causes of bullying such as bullying someone for their physical flaws and their race and ethnicity
On Wednesday, October 19th 2016, after another school day filled with taunts and torments, Bethany Thompson went home and took her own life. Bethany Thompson was an 11 year old brain cancer survivor that was diagnosed with cancer at the young age of 3. The same year she was diagnosed, Bethany went through surgery and radiation treatments to remove the tumor from her brain. As a result of all her treatments, Bethany’s face had deformed, painting her the perfect target for schoolyard bullies. On the bus ride home, Bethany told her best friend that when she arrived home, she would kill herself. By the time her best friend alerted an adult, it was too late. Bethany had found a gun, walked to the back porch where she then proceeded to shoot herself
Problems usually have solutions. Solutions could be extremely easy to find, or the process of finding one could be problematic. One worldly issue that does not have a solution yet is bullying. Bullying is present in schools world-wide, and it has been this way since there have been schools. This horrible act is accepted as part of life. People are used to bullying, that it almost seems normal. This should not be the case. Bullying is a horrific act that needs to be stopped, but is that possible? Three specific ways people have proposed to stop bullying is to criminalize bully in an attempt to deter any further bullying, to assign bullies student mentors in order to have someone guide them, or to force school or parental figures to be more active in trying to prevent bullying.
