Breast cancer is one type of cancer that has been in my family. One of my family members that had it, is dear and close to my heart. She fought for the longest time to keep getting better through all the chemo and the radiation that she went through to get rid of the cancer. She fought and fought, but she received treatments and was getting better for a while. When she was going through the treatments, if I or anyone in my family were sick and wanted to go see her, we had to wear a mask, so that we would not get her sick. We had to wear the masks because her immune system was not where it was before and could not fight off an illness as fast as it was once able to. She was getting back to her normal self and doing more for a while. Then she just became …show more content…
They have three types of ways to do the surgery depending on how bad that the cancer is. There is three types of procedures that could happen, a total or simple mastectomy, a modified radical mastectomy, or a radical mastectomy (Mastectomy). The majority of people only think of women having breast cancer, but men can get it too. When they get it, they would usually get the modified radical mastectomy (Mastectomy). A mastectomy is done to a person to remove as much as the cancer as they can and give them a greater chance of living (Mastectomy).
There is a risk for every procedure. Some complications that could happen includes infections, poor healing of the wound, bleeding, and even a reaction to the anesthesia that is used

Breast cancer was and still is the leading cause of death in women in the United States , and Dr. Halsted's number one goal was to reduce reoccurrence. He believed that the most effective way to reach this goal was to uproot the cancerous cells in the breasts, thus giving it its name "radical" mastectomy. The original mastectomy involved only removing the cancerous tumor, known today as a lumpectomy. After the aggressive disease returned, Halsted decided to remove the breast entirely. Frustrated with his negative results, he begins a tour through Europe to learn from some of the biggest names in surgery during the late 1800's throughout the early 1900's. Halsted wanted to keep cancer from taking over the body yet again. During his time in Europe, he witnesses his fellow surgeon, Volkmann, remo...
Surgery is the oldest type of treatment for cancer. In its earlier use, surgery was not as successful as it is today. This was due to the difficulties involved with the anesthesias, excessive blood loss, respiratory distress, and a number of other complications. Tumors were removed, but metastases had formed, and the cancer returned quickly. In modern day surgery, namely laser surgery, these difficulties do not occur as readily. There are four basic ways to use surgery. One way is a diagnostic biopsy. This is a technique that involves removing part of the tumor, in order to test for malignancy. Another technique is surgery that removes the primary tumor. A third technique is removal of lymphatic tumors and metastases, which can help reduce the recurrence of cancer. The fourth technique is a combination of surgeries to detect and treat a malignant or benign tissue mass (1).
A single-stage implant is done at the time of the mastectomy. Once the breast tissue is removed, the surgeon will insert
Breast cancer is most commonly diagnosed in Stage I and Stage II, where the size of the tumor is less than five centimeters in diameter. In these situations, surgery is often the second treatment option after chemotherapy and radiation therapy, both of which are used to shrink the tumor to a manageable size first. If the patient chooses to, the ...
Even though skin grafting does have it’s benefits, there are a few risks of having skin grafting anesthesia is having a reaction to the medicine and troubles with breathing. There are also different risks that can occur most commonly after the surgery such as bleeding, infection, scarring, skin discoloration, an uneven skin surface, reduced or lost skin sensation, loss of grafted skin (the graft not being able to heal or graft healing slowly) and chronic pain (rarely). Most skin grafts are successful, but some do not heal well, depending on the damage, and will require a second graft (not free of charge).
The one horrific thing about cancer is that I never knew when the timer would run out on me-or how I would cope with it. Finding out my grandmother had cancer instantly hurt me almost as much as it did to say goodbye.-it felt like the beginning to and end all too quick. It all started in the hospital with chemotherapy,
“Just take my hand, together we can do it, I’m gonna love you through it.” (I’m Gonna Love You Through It- Martina McBride). Breast cancer is an awful disease that will change your life in a single moment. ”Everything in my life was turned upside-down. I really had a wonderful life; A husband, three children. And breast cancer came along and just smashed my world” (Janelle’s Journey). Breast cancer is an aggressive war that takes a great amount of fighting to survive. “You go from being perfectly healthy, to feeling like, ‘okay, I’m dying’. It started a whirlwind of things that I never anticipated having to go through.” (Bonnie’s Story- Beyond The Shock). Did you know that the youngest person ever to have been diagnosed with breast cancer

Cancer is a disease that affects many different parts of the body and a various number of people. When it comes to women, breast cancer is the leading type of cancer they may encounter. Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that rises up from the cell within the breast. There are a vast number of risk factors, sign and symptoms and treatment that go along with breast cancer.
Cancer is a deadly disease that affects millions of American families each year. In cancer, cell division isn't controlled. Usually, cells have to go through a set of checks and balances before they divide, in cancer that is nonexistent. The cells just keep duplicating until they eventually form disorganized clumps called tumors. Tumors can either be, benign, meaning that they do not possess the power to metastasize to surrounding areas. If a tumor has the power to metastasize, it is classified as a malignant tumor. In simple terms, a benign tumor is not cancerous, and a malignant tumor is. Cancer cells cannot perform the necessary functions they were created for. Some types of cancers, like pancreatic cancer, cannot be cured. Other cancers such as melanoma and breast cancer have high survival rates when caught early. The four major types of treatments used to treat cancer include, surgery to remove the affected organ, radiation, chemotherapy, or biological treatments.
Avoid the sun during the middle of the day. For many people in North America, the sun 's rays are strongest between about 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Schedule outdoor activities for other times of the day, even in winter or when the sky is cloudy.
Cancer patients often wonder if going through treatments like chemotherapy and radiation are worth the risk of the side effects, in addition to the cancerous side effects. They feel that they can’t enjoy or relax in what a short amount of time they have left because they are bedridden from the nausea and pain that treatments put them through. Patients tell their loved ones to just let them die so long as they don’t have to go through any more pain. Those who are too old, are unable to recover from the effects, or are just too far in the grips of cancer, should refuse the more harsh treatments like chemo and radiation. On the positive side, refusing treatments after a certain point can save their families from the stress and cost of hospital bills. If caught early enough, patients can opt for safer and easier routes to getting rid of cancer like surgery or by doing a stem cell transplant.
The topic that I will be focusing on for this assignment is on the screening of lung cancer, since this is one of the most controversial debates all across the world. The significance of this topic is that when it comes to lung cancer screening, many individuals may or may not abide by it. There are many reasons to why individuals may not want to have their screening done for lung cancer. The top two reasons are that the screening itself is expensive and secondly, the results that they get from the screening may not be accurate. Imagine, if the results came up as a positive, for the ones who really do not have lung cancer, the amount of pain, time and money that they have put into the curing of lung cancer, is painful. At the same, time it is not fair for them to go through this much, when they actually do not have lung cancer. In this paper, I will discuss how lung cancer screening is a controversial issue and why it impacts us as a society and what problems that the family members, friends and medical doctors have to face if something does goes wrong.. Here is a portion of my essay that will appear on the final copy of my essay.

There are various models and theories such as health belief model that are used to explain ones belief on risks and associated risks of a chronic illness and then there are theories such as Crisis theory when dealing with shock when diagnosed with a chronic illness and gate control theory when looking at pain and the psychological issues around dealing with pain. However even with various theories and models trying to explain crisis, pain and compliance to treatment the outcome and understanding and ultimately the way an individual deals with a chronic illness such a breast cancer falls very much down to self-efficacy and the belief the individual holds towards the illness itself the attitude and perception in the outcome of the illness, treatment and beyond.
In just 2017 alone, about 252,710 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer is a life changing illness; it does not only affect the person with it, but it can affect the people around them. All the people who survive breast cancer have the fight and motivation to overcome it. My friend Dylan's mom Marta had breast cancer but fought like a champ and overcame it. Marta’s strength during her battle was very inspiring to all of the people around her.
