“The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them: that’s the essence of inhumanity.”(Shaw) When we see an animal abuse commercial, we get sad for a little while, but then it leaves our minds. Just because people don’t see it everyday doesn’t mean that it isn’t prevalent in today’s society. There are many organizations that are fighting for animal abuse laws, but people don’t believe that they are necessary. Most animal cruelty laws have been introduced to legislatures, but have not been supported. Laws that protect animals from cruelty, prevent cruel actions from happening, and stricter punishments are vital to animals. Animal cruelty laws have gained more attention and action in recent years, due to evidence that links domestic violence and animal abuse. The …show more content…
Humane Society of the United States cites several studies on the links between the abuse of animals and violence against people on their website (Rosenthal).
Animal abuse is a serious crime and is a key indicator that someone could be violent towards their families. In the world of law enforcement animal-cruelty issues were long considered a peripheral concern and the province of local A.S.P.C.A. and Humane Society organizations, but now that animal cruelty has been linked with violence, state legislatures have taken action (Siebert). This link between violence and animal abuse has now opened the world to more opportunities for law enforcement to catch animal abusers. Before the link between domestic violence and animal abuse was largely publicized, state legislatures had a hard time making laws that punished animal abusers. An
new animal cruelty legislation was passed in 2017 in Texas, and made violent offenses toward animals a third-degree felony with a penalty of two to ten years in prison (Rosenthal). The law also closes loopholes that have allowed animal abusers to avoid prosecution altogether (Rosenthal). States like New York and New Mexico are considering laws that require animal protection agencies to report suspected child abuse, and child protective services to report suspected animal cruelty (Animal Cruelty and Domestic Violence). These families and animals that have been abused are scarred for life. These new laws will hopefully put an end to this cycle of violence and animal cruelty. Numerous private organizations are striving to legislate laws that protect animals from cruelty. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is a non-profit organization that believes legislation is key in protecting and preventing animal cruelty (Public Policy). The ASPCA has a major role in many communities to fight for protecting animals. People have needed organizations to be formed, so that their arguments will have credibility. The ASPCA protects animals and provides for their well-being by establishing public policy through the legislative process, citizen initiatives, and consumer education campaigns (Public Policy). 123,271 ASPCA advocates took action in 2017 and 325,573 advocacy emails were sent to lawmakers by the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade (Public Policy). Another private organization that is fighting for laws that protect animals from cruelty is the Animal Legal Defense Fund. The Animal Legal Defense Fund’s mission is to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system (About Us). This organization starts high-impact lawsuits to protect animals from harm (About Us). The work of private organizations fighting to legislate laws is more effective than single people alone fighting the government. With these private organizations and their large followings, the government is more likely to pass laws that protect animals. Animal cruelty is a problem that has been happening for a very long time and will only get worse if we do not inform the people about the lack of laws that are protecting animals lives. Doing this will not only save the lives of so many animals but will also prevent future animal abuse.

Most people are either unaware, or refuse to look at the facts concerning animal abuse. Animal abuse is the immoral and necglectful treatment that threatens the life on an animal. This unethical behavior is often expressed through corporate methods of producing products made from animals. The food and beauty industry are notorious offenders of the welfare of living beings. Evidence has shown that there are well known, multi-billion dollar industries that have been torturing innocent and voiceless animals in secrecy all around the globe. Humans often benefit from these creatures through commercial means, but think little of the agony these animals must endure from the bloodshed. If society is not willing to give up it's exploitative tendencies towards the lives of animals, big and small, then stricter laws need to be enforced defending the animals, and consumers have to be made aware of the atrocities that have been taking place.
In a recent statistic animal abuse in some cases involves domestic abuse as well. The statistic states 13% of animal abusers are also abusive in relationships. “70% of animal abusers also have records of other crimes” (People Problem). For an example, a spouse in a relationship is frightened to leave the relationship because they are worried the abuser will take their anger out on a animal. It is believed that aggressive abusers tend to abuse animals because they see them as lifeless
Executive Summary Every 60 seconds, an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
I will review the inadequacies and poorly enforced laws that are currently meant to protect animals from human cruelty. Neglect and intentional harm constitute the two types of animal cruelty, as categorized by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Both types of animal cruelty are present in zoos in the U.S. as well as in other countries around the world. Drug abuse, lameness, insufficient care and long road trips are all indications of animal cruelty, requiring better laws and enforcement in these zoos. We may not consider unintentional harm as cruelty and only notice intentional harm such as animal abuse, but unintentional harm can be just as bad. The development of rights for our animals should be an effective
One of the most overlooked social issues in our society is simply the abuse of animals. In our society today most animal abuse victims are dogs followed by cats and other animals. In our society today many people look at animals as property and possessions. Even though legally there are yours people in this society need to understand that animals are breathing organisms that have life and feelings just like we do. So we need to try to help everyone in different communities understand what animal abuse is and when they are doing it, knowingly and unknowingly.
Imagine loving someone, and living your life to protect them, and in return you are put in a kennel and starved for days at a time. Cruelty is defined as behavior that causes pain or suffering to a person or animal. Animal abuse is an issue that continues to grow not only in the United States, but all over the world. Animal abuse and neglect is an issue more people should be aware of. Just because you don’t see it happening in your neighborhood, doesn’t mean it’s not happening behind closed doors, or anywhere else in the world. Abuse can be starving animals, to makeup companies testing their products on animals skin.
In this paper, we will be discussing how animal abuse should or should not have harsher penalties. “Animal abuse occurs in 80 percent of homes that show other signs of abuse such as child abuse” (Onegreenplanet.org). Some statistics show 68 percent of battered women reported violence towards their animals, 13 percent of intentional animal abuse cases involve domestic violence, 36 percent of profiled serial killers admitted to committing animal cruelty as children.
People think that animal abuse makes them toughness and have strength. People abuse animals because they have sense of pleasure by torturing People are extremely dangerous and often target others when the animal dies of the abuse.”Rising Phoenix 2014-2015 received may
Animal cruelty is a problem quickly growing in today’s world. Animals are being beaten, starved and killed everyday and so many helpless animals die each year because of heartless owners. There are a lot of types of animal cruelty some of the common forms are scientists doing experiments on dogs, or when people abuse and mistreat animals.
Animals are in many ways the same as human beings. We consider them our best freind, sibling, child, or to put it simply, we view them as being part of our family. For example, my parents have a a Pekingese puppy, whom I identify and treat as my little brother. I could never imagine what I'de do if anything were to happen to him. For these reasons, I strongly believe in the rights of animals and the need to provide them full protectionfrom violence and danger. Those who share this concern can in fact find on the internet useful information that addresses the issues of animal abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Some of these sources of information are organizations, which include, but are not limited to, the American Humane Organization (AHO) and National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) . These animal welfare groups service our communities in various ways, which I will discuss.
Animals have also been seized from caretakers that either neglect or abuse them. This means that these animals have suffered under someone’s care and must be taken away to a shelter or elsewhere so that they may receive proper care. Animals have the same rights that we do, and have done nothing to deserve this bizarre treatment. This is a growing problem that may have
“Those convicted of animal cruelty can be imprisoned. Appropriate sentencing can also include individual or family counseling, community service. Also a prohibition owning or caring for animals.” (The humane society of the United States). “Law enforcement officers and judges recognize that cruelty to animals is one part of a complex problem. Sometimes the officials response to animal cruelty provides a family its first opportunity to get help.” (Human Education Department). Authorities help
Apes are also very commonly found in labs for testing, not testing of beauty products, but other things such as vaccines, military experiments and training, and invasive brain experiments, as well as many other things. Research has found that people who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit other acts of violence. Not only is it the abusers who do other acts of violence, also research shows that children who witness the abuse are three times more likely to later in life, play a role in an abusive relationship. For the abuser, it is about the power they have over the helpless victim, and in this case it would be an animal. Because of this, when an abuser(who abuses someone) has power over their victim, and they leave, the abuser will then turn to the animal and torture it or even kill it for revenge. So, recently states have changed their legislation to include protections for victims animal, which gives people the opportunity to leave an abusive situation with a peace of mind, because they know their pets will be safe. In the future, animal abuse could potentially lead to more people committing acts of violence. Police know that in homes where animal abuse is a problem, other issues often occur, so by reporting, investigating, and prosecuting animal cruelty can help take criminals off the
Animals have been an important part of scientific research since humans began expanding their knowledge of diseases, ailments, and other experimentation since the 1600’s. Following centuries later Europe created acts to prevent unusual cruelty towards animals used for experimental research. It was not till almost a century later that the U.S. passed Federal legislation for animal welfare. After the first law passed in 1966 others followed in the years to come, eventually leading to animal cruelty to be charged as a Federal crime. There are several different branches regarding animal welfare laws including varying degrees of cruelty and other circumstances. In order to charge someone with violating the act there are specific elements
