Persuasive Essay Of Honoring The American Flag

Being an American comes with great opportunities and freedoms. One of those freedoms is a person’s right to fly the American Flag. Not only is this a right that many Americans express, I believe it is one that they should. There are many reasons that the American flag should be flown, and one of those reasons is to support our current troops. All of our troops are fighting for our freedom. They go day to day doing all they can to keep this country safe. These troops leave everything they have at home, including their loved ones, just to fight for our country. The least we can do, as the people they are fighting for, is show some respect by flying the flag of their country. On top of the current troops, flying the flag shows gratitude to those who have fought and have returned home. I am sure it is one of the greatest feelings coming home after being away for so long. Not every soldier's experience is a good one, but if they get to return home, they deserve to be thanked for their sacrifice. Those who do come home on good terms at the end of a tour, also deserve to see the flag flying, thanking them and showing them the gratitude of their country. Along with current and past

soldiers, those who have given their lives for this country, should have the flag flown in their honor.
Not only is the flag flown for veterans or current soldiers, but it is flown for certain celebrations and officials.

For example, some days that it is proper to fly the American flag are holidays such as New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Constitution Day, Columbus Day, Navy Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Along with holidays many previous Presidents’ and honorable leaders birthday’s have been granted the privilege of having the flag flown on that day. People whose birthday;s have been given this privilege are Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, Lincoln’s Birthday, and Washington’s Birthday. With these names and many others, every new President has the flag flown on Inauguration

Day.
There are also many other reasons that the flag is flown for. For example the flag isn’t always flown fully, it is sometimes flown at half staff. The flag is flown at half staff only by order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with the law.
With all of these reasons and many more, it can be said that flying the flag is a very important practice to America. It is done for many reasons, but mostly to show our pride in our country. The flag is the symbol of our country and freedom, and deserves to be flown at all times in America.
