Recommended: The beer brewing process
Beer, more commonly known as ale, is an alcoholic drink produced by the breakdown of starch and fermentation of the developed sugars. The starch and enzymes that break it down are commonly made from malted cereal grains, wheat, and barley, or secondary starch sources such as corn, or rice. Almost all beer is flavored by the addition of hops, which acts as a natural preservative and adds bitterness, though other flavorings such as herbs or fruit may be included as well to add a more appealing taste. The strength of alcohol content in beer is measured by color, and bitterness. The darker and more bitter the beer, the stronger it will be. Drinking beer can have beneficial factors, such as prevention against carcinogens, osteoporosis, and provides plasma with significant defense from oxidative stress, as described by Keiji Kondo in his book “Beer and Health”. There are many beneficial aspects that come with drinking beer, but there are many laws that come with it as well, seeing as there are also damaging effects that can be caused by drinking beer under the age required by law.

To ferment the starch, the ground up grain is infused with hot water in a large tank called a “mash tun”, where the grain and water are mixed together creating a cereal mash. A cereal mash is a sugar rich liquid which is strained through the bottom of the mash tun to the copper tank, where the addition of hops, or other herbs are added to create a satisfying flavor, and bitterness to the beer. The whirlpool is the final process in the making of beer, where the more solid particles are separated to make a bright and clean appearance, rather than a cloudy, unpleasant quality. At the end of this long process, the sugars have become an alcohol due to fermentation, and is transported to local stores near you, and is stored in bottles or
The three basic nutritional components found in food--carbohydrates, proteins, and fats--are used as energy after being converted to simpler products. Some alcoholics ingest as much as 50 percent of their total daily calories from alcohol, often neglecting important foods. Even when food intake is adequate, alcohol can damage the mechanisms by which the body controls blood glucose levels, resulting in either increased or decreased blood glucose (glucose is the body's principal sugar. As a result, alcohol causes the brain and other body tissue to be deprived of glucose needed for energy and function. Although alcohol is an energy source, how the body processes and uses the energy from alcohol is more complex than can be explained by a simple calorie conversion value. For example, alcohol provides an average of 20 percent of the calories in the diet of the upper third of drinking Americans, and we might expect many drinkers who consume such amounts to be obese. Instead, national data indicate that, despite higher caloric intake, drinkers are no more obese than nondrinkers. Also, when alcohol is substituted for carbohydrates, calorie for calorie, subjects tend to lose weight, indicating that they derive less energy from alcohol than from food
As one of the major social problem, underage drinking can cause negative affect on both teenagers themselves and the whole society. Based on the research, approximately 190,000 youth under 21 visited emergency room for alcohol related hurts, even I accompanied one of my friends to ICU for alcohol poisoning nearly month ago. Annually about 5000 individuals under 21 die from it, not including other mature people directly or indirectly killed by them. Meanwhile, child’s brain and emotional developments are still in process until 20s so that taking alcohol will produce great damage on their body health. For example, alcohol can interfere with children’s capacity to build new, short, and lasting memories of information because it shrinks hippocampus about 10
I’m here to persuade you in supporting a lower legal drinking age to age 18 because 1. It would eliminate temptation of breaking law (to drink) 2. Reduce unsafe drinking activities (Binge drinking) 3. It should correspond to the age of adulthood
Many young adults and college educators argue that the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) should be lowered but I disagree. I don’t think that lowering the legal drinking age would be a good idea because alcohol is one of the main causes of deaths among young adults and also affects their academic performance. Lowering the legal age of drinking will just be a huge mistake. The government should instead raise it higher than 21 or enforce the MLDA more.
Smoking has become a big epidemic in the United States. As a tobacco free person, I want to be able to breathe clean air anywhere I go. As we know, smoking can harm every organ in the body (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). I believe that smoking should be banned in public places such as drinking establishments, hospitals, buses, train stations, and restaurants. Not only does smoking affect the individual smoker, it also causes a number of health problems, increases death rate, and it affects not only the lives, but the health of other people around them. On the contrary, smoking should be banned in public areas for these reasons.
People throughout the time have been worried about some acts that people make; these acts are sometimes performed unconsciously or without realizing these are affecting they negatively affect others. Some reasons why this happens, they do not realize they are making someone uncomfortable, or they simply do not care about it. Smoking is one of these activities. For a long time, smoking in public places has been extremely popular regardless of age or gender. Many smokers believe they are free to smoke wherever and whenever they. Even if they realize the damage they are causing to themselves, which is a personal decision, when they smoke in public places they ignore the collective damage they are causing others. It has been claimed that despite not engaging in the activity themselves, “passive smokers suffer the same horrifying bad consequences as active smokers” in the form of second-hand smoke (Ecobichon & Wu, 1990, p. 43). Smoking is thus a dangerous activity that is becoming more and more popular in campus every day and is becoming a social and educational problem. Schools should ban smoking from their campus, and those that have should implement stricter methods of enforcing such rules.
Have you ever has a time that you has to cover your mouth and nose when you are in public because fearing that you might can get cancer from inhale toxic smoke by smoker ? Smoking is one major health problems in the world. This issue is getting more and more serious as we can see in public places where people are start smoking. Some people are not smoke because they want to live longer with healthier live. Some public smoker may think, all mankind are free to do everything they want, but they have to respect others’ life. Some people want in inhales fresh air, and clean air while they are in public places. Smoking should be banned in public places because smoking affect a healthy environment for nonsmokers, affect society for young people, and affect people’s health.
Death is one of the things in life you simply cannot avoid and there are ways, through the advancement of technology that can make people live longer. But there are also things that can cause human lives to become shorter and one of the biggest cause is cigarettes. Cigarettes contributes to over 500,000 deaths in the United States from smoking related illnesses. Considering the harmful effects of cigarettes, they should be made illegal in the United States due to the addiction of cigarettes, it’s a danger to the environment. The heavy number of diseases they carry, and the danger of second smoke.
Driving under the influence is one of the most common and dangerous situations in which anyone can be or be placed. Drinking and driving is a serious offence that can cause someone to be physically harm or even killed. Not only are you putting yourself at risk but you are also risking the lives of passengers in the car as well as any other car and occupants sharing the road with you. Many people believe that increasing fines for drunk driving offenders will play a compelling role in cutting down the occurrences of driving under the influence. However, while harsher DUI laws will look effective on paper, they will not make a significant step in the fight against drunk driving. Although there is a law enforced for drinking and driving in the
Beer is produced with a mixture of mashed barley, malt, and rice or corn. U.S. brewers use filtration systems as well as add additives to stabilize the foam and allow long lasting freshness. Bottled or canned beer is almost always pasteurized in the container in prevent the yeast from further fermentation.
Coase study #2 Beer: The vice president of marketing for a major brewing company is aware that college students account for a large proportion of beer sales and that people in this age group form lifelong loyalties to brands of beer. The executive is personally uncomfortable with the tasteless gimmicks used by her competitors in the industry to encourage drinking on campuses, including beach parties and beer-drinking contests. She worries about the company’s contribution to underage drinking and alcohol abuse among college students. Should she go along with the competition? State your case/opinion, etc.
“Alcoholism (alcohol dependence) is a more severe pattern of drinking that includes the problems of alcohol abuse plus persistent drinking in spite of obvious physical, mental, and social problems caused by alcohol” (Ringold, M. S.). Alcoholism is a major social problem in today’s world. People can agree that alcoholism threatens the lives of the person and the people they care about. Alcohol is one of the drugs that have caused serious problems for the younger generation. Alcoholism is greatly influenced by peer pressure. To get stress out, sometimes an alcoholic will drink heavily. Alcohol consumption is associated with your health. Drinking heavily can be the cause for liver cancer. Also, you can be intoxicated and could be driving drunk
Alcohol abuse is when someone starts to develop the need for alcohol, and for the people who are alcoholics, the need for alcohol turns into the same amount of need as food and water. Alcohol abuse is starting to become a bigger problem each year. Alcohol abuse has been tearing families apart more each year as well. Children see their parents or legal guardian abusing alcohol and grow up with the idea that it is okay to consume that much alcohol. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, INC. more than 7 million children live with a parent that suffers from alcohol abuse, rendering to the 2017 statistics. Alcohol abuse is the most common addictive substance with 17.6 million people, or one in every 12 adults is categorized
Underage drinking causes people to make bad decisions, such as; driving while intoxicated, becoming pregnant, and making a complete fool out of themselves. While intoxicated, are just being a few instances that can and will impact your life forever. Some individuals don’t understand what alcohol really does to the body. Beer has empty calories that will make you gain weight. Which is why a lot of alcoholics have larger stomachs, or another term many people use for these large stomachs is, “beer belly.” Some people may say that alcohol helps you escape your problems and is a stress relevant. Alcohol will not only bring more stress onto your life, it will also bring more problems. As much as people may feel alcohol helps, it really won’t help.
All types of alcohol go through a fermentation process, when looking sthe production beer, the fermentation process contains a series of distinct stages. Beer includes four main ingredients; some sort of grain (wheat, corn, barley), hops, water, and yeast. The beer process begins with the malting process, the stage where the grain is soaked in water for days to allow adequate germination time. This process is important because allowing the grain to germinate produces enzymes that are need to break down starch in succeeding steps. At times, the conversion of starch to sugar can begin during malting due to enzymes present within the grain, but the majority of the conversions begin in the next step (Michaels, 2010). Following the malting process, the grains go through a process called mashing, defined as the stage where the grain is hydrated causing the enzymes to activate and begin converting the starches into sugars. In the mashing stage enzymes are activated and begin to convert starch into sugars that will eventually go through the fermentation process.
