“I am not beautiful. I am not smart. I am fat. My skin color is ugly.” Those are some of the phrases used by some people who have been scarred by stereotypes. Sadly, those are the words that I have said to myself because of the norm that society has put on today’s culture. There are people who look in the mirror in disgust because they do not look like a supermodel or their friends. Some would say that discrimination and racism are in the past. If that was the case, then why is stereotyping according to race, height, weight, and abilities still occurring? Although some believe that stereotyping is excusable, there are people thinking it is okay to stereotype, feeling rejected, and some who are rising up to tear down the ones who broke them. …show more content…

Words leave bigger bruises than weapons. People do not realize the power of the tongue. Words can lead up to being rejected. The effects of rejection leave people in such dark places. Some people will result in self harm. Their mindset begins to say “Well if I do not look like her or if I am not as smart as him, I will never amount to anything. People will never like me if I do not change who I am.” They will try to destroy themselves physically, mentally, and verbally. If people accepted every stereotype said, the world would be a battlefield to live on. Why should we accept this kind of behavior? “Stereotyping is especially prevalent – and problematic – in conflicts. Groups tend to define themselves according to who they are and who they are not. And ‘others,’ especially ‘enemies’ or ‘opponents’ are often viewed in very negative ways. The opponent is expected to be aggressive, self-serving, and deceitful, for example, while people in one’s own group are seen in generally positive ways.” (Burgess 6-7) The world should not be a competition of who is better by beauty, money, IQ, etc. Stereotyping can lead to self-destruction.
