Bullying has become a serious issue in the past few years for many students. The constant harassment by peers can take a serious toll on the victims. There are many variations of bullying— cyber bullying, verbal bullying, physical bullying, and many others. With so many variations of bullying, it leaves a large amount of room for potential victims to be hurt. What happens when bullying enters a school environment? How does this affect the students? The students are affected greatly. I can personally think of several examples here at West Salem High School that have ruined some student 's friendships and lives. Including mine.

Hurtful words, online or in person, can make a person hurt and seriously consider drastic measures to make the bullying stop. Sadly, suicide is in the mind of today’s youth. Bullying has led to attempted suicides in our school, and sadly even some students did sadly choose to commit suicide. Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University (“New Anti-Bullying Act”). It 's heartbreaking that individuals can hurt other students so much to the point of not wanting to live anymore. I know many personal friends that have thought about suicide, and one that has succeeded. Bullying is never okay, but especially not to the point where an individual feels the need to take his or her own life because of it. Continuous bullying can eventually result in the victim needing to take medicine for depression issues or severe anxiety. In extreme cases, some short-term effects of bullying could be sleep disorders, rage, poor appetite, depression and many more. Nobullying.com reports that, "83 percent of girls, and 79 percent of boys report being bullied either in school or online,” (“Bullying Statistics 2014”). Why is it that such large portions of students are being bullied and are negatively affected by it, yet it continues? These children are being physically affected by the negative treatment by their peers. Bullying and depression are largely linked, and it 's something that needs to be fixed. Schools should become more aware of the problems with bullying happening inside the walls, along with outside it. If everybody worked on bringing down the bullies and bullying, perhaps the effects wouldn’t be as extreme as they are
