Personalized Medicine
Thanks to modernized medicine, there are several different drugs that can be implemented in various ways to help people in personalized means.
The drug Trastuzumab is used for some breast cancers and stomach cancers. It is used for cancers that have large amounts of a protein called HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2). The drug uses monoclonal antibodies, which is a new type of "targeted" cancer therapy. In this type of therapy, antibodies attach to an antigen to mark it for destruction by the body's immune system. Scientists analyze specific antigens on the surface of cancer cells to determine a protein to match the antigen, and then work to create a special antibody that will attach to the target antigen;
this allows the treatment to target specific cells, causing less toxicity to healthy cells. Monoclonal antibody therapy can only be done for cancers where the specific antigens/antibodies have been identified. Trastuzumab personally works by targeting the HER2/neu receptor on cancer cells. The HER2 gene produces a protein receptor on the cell surface that signals normal cell growth, however, some cancerous tissue has HER2/neu overexpression, which triggers the cells to divide/multiply very fast. Trastuzumab attaches to the receptors to prevent cells from multiplying, preventing further cancer growth and slowing cancer progression. It also works by stimulating an immune mechanism. The drug Imatinib is used to treat Leukemia, and other various disorders/cancers of the white blood cells. It is also used to treat certain types of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), type of tumor that grows in the walls of the digestive passages. The drug is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors, specifically Imatinib is a protein-tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals the cancer cells to multiply rapidly. Imatinib inhibits the Bcr-Abl tyrosine kinase, which is the abnormality created by the Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. It suppresses proliferation and causes apoptosis in cells that are Bcr-Abl positive. The drug also hinders the receptor responsible for platelet derived growth factor and stem cell factor (c-kit). Imatinib becomes personalized when it affects different tyrosine kinases, which can be turned on or off depending on the type and what stage of cancer the person has.
This paper discusses pharmacology and terminology related to “Pharmacology” which is the branch of medicine concerned with the uses, effects, and modes of action of drugs“ pharmacology. 2015. In Merriam-Webster.com. The study of different classes of drugs, routes of absorption, and drugs have effects on those consuming them. There are drugs that are necessary for illnesses and healing but, there are medicines that cause concern regarding interaction and harming the body.
Polypharmacy is the “concurrent use of several differ drugs and becomes an issue in older adults when the high number of drugs in a medication regimen includes overlapping drugs for the same therapeutic effect”(Woo & Wynne, 2011, p. 1426). The patient is currently taking several medications that can potential interact with each other, perform the same therapeutic effect, and creating side effects. The following is a list of her medications and their indications:
Omnicare has a direct impact on the health of senior citizens. They should also continue in this area. They can leverage their pharmaceutical expertise to create unique databases and proprietary clinical information services, all focused on providing the safest, most appropriate, most cost-effective drug therapies for the elderly. Their programs and services encourage early diagnosis and treatment, since this usually provides the best quality of life at a lower cost.
both the benefit and risk of all medication before approval.. In addition, FDA makes the labeling
When I was around the age of 6, my dad started shaking and was turning blue. I did not know what was happening but I later on found out that he was having a seizure. I remember after he came back from the hospital that he took these pills twice a day. He had a relapse a couple of years later from not taking the medication. From that experience, I learned that those pills he was taking did help him. Since that occurred, it made me aware of side effects from taking medication thus tweaking my interest more. This incident made me want to help people by prescribing medicine just
The advancement in health care and biomedical technology has made biomedical model that focuses just on curing the disease as the dominant approach. It excludes emotional, social, psychological and behavioral aspects of illness. However with increase in chronic disease and need for long term care, the healthcare delivery systems are changing, making it more patient centric. The health practices are gradually focusing on design of treatment plans based on patents narratives.
To understand how immunotherapy works it helps to know how your immune system works to fight against cancer. Cancer cells have substances on their surfaces called tumor antigens that raise an alarm in the immune system that says cancer is present. Antigen presenting cells ( APCs) roam the body seeking out and ingesting tumor antigens. The APCs then activate B cells and T cells. The B cells differentiate into plasma cells and secrete antibodies that bind to the tumor cell and mark them for elimination ( a humoral immune response). When T cells are activated they proliferate and undergo expansion, seek out, and destroy cells bearing the specific tumor antigens ( a cellular immune response). Sometimes your immune response does not destroy all of the cancer cells and this r...

Almost every human being on Earth has experienced some form of medication in their lifetime. Whether it may be pill form, syrup, topical creams, or even a shot; medicine is experienced by everyone. The three medicines that I have chosen to talk about today are Lamisil, Lipitor and Zoloft. All three of these medications must be prescribed by a doctor.
Medicine plays an eminent role in healing and treating illnesses and dates back to ancient times where people would use herbs, oils, massage, and other natural means to heal their sicknesses. Medicine has evolved and pills, vaccines, and conventional forms of cancer treatment, are common within the medical industry. Now, the medical industry relies heavily on pharmaceutical drugs to treat their patients’ illnesses and diseases, but many of the drugs cause a great number of side effects and can even do more harm than good. This has sparked my interest in finding ways to cure illnesses with an alternative to conventional medicine without the harmful side effects. Realizing I am in my late teens, and I am free to change my mind, the professional
I do not know about you, but some of my favorites gifts are the ones that are made just for me. It could be my name engraved in a piece of jewelry or a calendar filled with family photos. Quite simply, these objects are the dearest, because they were carefully thought out for me. The arena of precision medicine is simplistic in spirit, but there is exquisite complexity in the technology to deliver this medicine. With each passing year, the ability to pinpoint the problem and fine tune treatments is moving at a fast clip. Unfortunately, for many with chronic or life threatening conditions such as cancer, the pace of science cannot move fast enough. The benefits of precision medicine, three technologies that enable precision medicine, and the field of personalized medicine will be discussed.
This list provided should not be taken as a complete list as these are the ones that are commonly used; the list goes on from here. Medication and dosage decisions need to be considered carefully and in consultation with a health care provider. Not every patient will react the same to each medication. There is not a certainty that the medication will prove to be the answer for every patient (Li & Williams, 2012). It is not uncommon for a patient to need to adjust dosages or switch medications when one loses its effectiveness (Li & Williams,
Following the results from this trial, 46 HPBC patients were recruited by Baselga et al. (1999) to examine the safety and efficacy of weekly administration of trastuzumab (26). An overall response rate of 11.6% with one complete and four partial remissions were observed (26). As previous findings showed, treatment with trastuzumab was well-tolerated with minimal signs of toxicity (26). Similarly, the results from Vogel et al. (2002) confirm this as demonstrated by the response rate of 26% with seven complete and 23 partial remissions in 114 women with HER2-overexpressing metastatic breast cancer
Over the centuries, several treatment methods have been utilized by humans for remedy diseases when they caught. Two of them are modern medicine and traditional medicine. Traditional medicine, which is also called alternative treatment, is older than modern medicine. This effective treatment had been used for many centuries before modern medicine was found. On the contrary, modern medicine has been used since the 1900’s (Lyons). In this system, drugs’ tests are carefully done in the safe laboratories, and their side effects are identified before they are given to the patient. Moreover, the effects of the pills are written on the leaflets which are found in the drug packages to warn the patients for these effects. However, sometimes the side effects are not blocked, so people have to take another pill to get better. It makes people take more chemicals into their bodies. Even traditional medicine, give its place to the modern medicine when its beginning times, it is used efficaciously like modern medicine at the present time. In course of time, people will gain reliance on traditional medicine again, since alternative medicine is more efficient and powerful in order to get better and soothe the diseases than modern medicine. In fact, in traditional medicine, there are fewer drugs, side effects, holistic therapy that people can be availed.
