There has been a lot of debate over whether or not personality can change over time. Sigmund Freud and Erik Erikson are two philosophers who debate the subject on opposite sides. I will discuss their views on the matter and state my opinion about which philosopher I agree with. But to even begin to dive into the subject, we must know what the subject is. Personality and it’s components are going to be discussed in this paper, so we must understand what personality is. Although there are many theories about personality, they all seem to center around the same thing, genetics and life experience. The term personality comes from the Latin word Persona, which referred to a theatrical masks worn by performers to disguise themselves. “Personality …show more content…
His theory define that the most powerful force in personality is the unconscious. The unconscious contains all the drives, urges, or instincts that are outside awareness but nonetheless motivates most of our speech, thoughts, feelings, or actions. Before, most people seems that we consciously think, feel, and believe is a relatively accurate and important source of information for explaining our behavior and personality. The conscious layer is what we are aware of at any given moment in time, whereas the preconscious is just below the surface of awareness. It is not currently conscious but can become so relatively easy. Freud believed that much of what we do and the reasons we do it are hidden from our awareness and revealed to us in only distorted forms, such as slips of the tongue and dreams. Fraud didn't believe that personality could completely change over time. He thought that the personality remains mostly consistent throughout a person's whole life.(9) I would have to agree with Erik Erikson and Alfred Adler's theories. I believe that personality can change and genetics and childhood development plays a big part in it. Through our experiences while growing up, we are influenced by others and we try to make ourselves better and that can change your personality. Our personality is not set in stone, we can change it according to how we want to
As is already mentioned above, it is very difficult to define Personality in the real sense. Even if we try to do so, we won’t be able to reach a specific conclusion about the things that are to be taken into consideration for defining it. However, we can vaguely define Personality as a particular quality or trait that makes an individual
Everybody's personality is different. Some may be extraversion's or narcissists, low self-monitoring or high self-monitoring and the list goes on. During this semester, taking Personality Theories has thought me more about myself than I have learned in my whole life. I believe that my personality stems from my family environment, my friends and society and then I get to choose what I think to be morally correct and what fits with my personality the best.
Personality is patterns of thinking, behavior and emotional responses that make up individuality over time. Psychologist attempt to understand how personality develops and its impact on how we behave. Several theories attempt to explain personality, using different approaches. The social-cognitive and humanistic approaches are two of many theories that attempt to explain personality. This essay will identify the main concepts of social-cognitive and humanistic approach, identify perspective differences and discuss approach limitations.
I believe that personality can change over time. This I believe, because I don’t think that anyone ever grows up and doesn’t change at all. For example, when I was young, I was extremely reserved, anxious, and stringent, but now, in my senior year of highschool, I have become more relaxed, but serious, and I still am quiet and introverted, but to a lesser extent than I was before. I have also become much more focused and more mature than I was just a few years ago, which is all because of the curriculum here at my school. I have also seen people I know change over the years as they grow older and mature. I've also witnessed close friends change as we've grown up over the years. My close friend Nick used to be a flamboyant, go-with-the-flow kind of kid, but now as he entered his senior he has become more mature, responsible, and more caring than he
My personality plays a big part in my life, the qualities I possess, how I am perceived by others, and how well I interact with them. I believe I have an outgoing personality, I am easy to approach and get along with and much more. As I reflect on Freud and his theory, I can agree with him in some areas, but I don’t believe that the person personality was shaped almost entirely by childhood events. He was well known for his psychoanalytic theory of personality development, believing that the personality is shaped by conflicts fundamental structures of the mind: the id, ego, and superego (Funder, 2016). He was a psychologist who paved the way for others to come behind him. There are many who did agree with his theories
It is used to describe your character such as the way you react to an event, your style of clothing and your hobbies. According to etymonline.com, personality is derived
When we are born, over time we grow up and develop a personality. For each person, our personalities differentiate between one another which presents a wide variety of individuals. According to psychology, there are different factors that make up who we are. Today, I will be talking about the four major theories of personality (Psychodynamic, five-factor model, humanistic, and social-cognitive).
Personality is the study of an individual’s unique and relatively stable patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving over time and across situations and it is what distinguishes one individual from another. In the past changes in personality were thought to have only occurred in the developmental stages of childhood and solidifies in adolescence. After the teenage years it was thought to be set like plaster or the change seen to be inconsequential or absent( Srivastava, John, Gosling, and Potter, 2003). However, recent studies have suggested that changes in personality traits continue to occur throughout an individual’s lifespan due to multiple reasons.
I do believe that he fundamental choice of personality can be altered if you are determined enough to overcome your insecurities
Our personalities are what distinguish us from each other beyond our appearance; without them, we would all behave and react in the same way. Personality is the reason we are outgoing or introverted, persistent or blaze, and anxious or calm. We each have different levels of these competing characteristics that make us unique. But why are personalities so varied? Personality is determined by an array of factors from genetic and biological to the personal experiences and decisions we have faced from the day we are born. The complexity of our personalities cannot be simply explained, and for this reason there exists many different theories of how it’s developed and personality is still deeply under study. I went into this subject with an open-mind
Personality takes many shapes and forms and is affected by many factors. My understanding of personality is simply a genetic and environmentally determined set of psychological traits that influence our reactions in the world around us. Genetic because our parents possess a certain set of psychological personality traits that we tend to have in common with them so therefore in my opinion there are heritable personality traits. Personality is environmental because we each have our own separate experiences in the world and these experiences help form our unique personality. Neo-Freudians such as Jung have given us a wide array of ideas of how they believe personality is developed and formatted. Jung in particular has a very interesting
The concept of personality has numerous definitions (Fatahi, Moradi, & Kashani-Vahid, 2016). Schultz and Schultz (2009), define personality in its broad sense as the manner of an individual’s behaviour in different situations. This essay explores the nature of personality, with the intention of highlighting its flexibility. The results of numerous empirical research studies are examined in order to investigate if, and how personality changes over time. It will be argued that an individual’s personality has the ability to change throughout their life.
Where do you think your personality came from? The nature vs. nurture has been going on for many, many years and will probably keep going on for many more years. The purpose of this debate is to determine which one has a bigger influence on personality. It is a proven fact that both nurture and nature have a huge role in contributing to your personality development. Identical twins have many similarities, but also many differences. Your personality can change while you are growing up. Studies have shown that your personality is based off your surroundings and how you grow up. In most cases nurture has a more stronger influence on your personality than nature does.
The definition of personality is the development of the organized pattern of behaviors and attitudes that makes a person distinctive. A personality is what make the people of our society different from everyone else. Every person on this earth has their very own personality. In some cases there may be things a like, but the personality trait combinations are not always the same. My personality consists of these three traits: hard-working, determined, and friendly.
Personality is the expression of a person’s traits according to ones feelings, mentality and behavior. It involves understanding individuals’ traits such as withdrawal and willpower and how various parts of an individual link together to form personality. Personality expresses itself from within an individual and is comparatively regular throughout in an individual’s life. Different people have different personalities dependent on factors such as environment and genetic composition. Our personality is dependent on the success or failure of our development in the eight stages of life. This is proposed by Erik Erikson. Success in the development stages lead to virtues while the failure leads to malignancies.
