Morality is set of principles guiding us to evaluate that what is right or wrong, and it builds the personal character, reasonable behavior and choices of a person as well as helps people to justify decisions, goals, and actions all through the life. The fabric of any society is held together by the standards of morality that we maintain and practice. The values our personal set is the belief about what is important, unimportant, right, wrong, good, and bad which have the same value with morality. When we are confronted by choices, opinions, or moral dilemmas, the decisions we make will indicate what values we hold. Morality gives worthiness and respect to life. Moral values are a kind of standard that teach us good virtues such as honesty, …show more content…
From the perspective of equality, freedom, and improving the human condition, it is easy to say that religious laws are highly immoral, and thus are a detriment to the development of our society. An example of this is for the thousands of years that religions have to address longstanding issues like slavery, race and gender equality, and sanctity of life, but all of these issues are failed to deal and solve. Even today, in Kashmir and other Islamic nations, women are forced to wear burkas from head to toe. This rule is only the one which is on a long list of Islamic laws that subdue women; the list includes ideas that women cannot marry without male guardian's permission, in addition, the rule is even restrictive for women's freedom that they cannot travel outside of their hometown without a male chaperone who must be a close relative; and for the most frightening, a woman's witness is worth half that of a man's. There is also a fact exist that shows a lack of respect toward women, which is that women cannot be the priests in the Catholic Church. It is not only women who have been lowered in status are treated invidiously by the religious world, but also the homosexuals are inequitable to be treated in the religious world. In the article "Atheism Teaches Morality and Ethics", Paul Kurtz recognizes that "Some conservative religious moralists seek to enact a constitutional amendment that would prohibit it. They insist that marriage must be between one man and one woman, as is divinely sanctified by the Bible; further, they believe that heterosexual marriage is threatened by gay marriage" (5). These are obsolete ideas which are stripping a group of people based on their fundamental rights of the sexuality as human beings; these kinds of crosscurrent
What is morality? Merriam-Webster dictionary states that morality is/are the beliefs about what right behavior is and what wrong behavior is
Religion motivates people to not stray from the path of virtue, but in return, their fear of God keeps those who believe from deviating from the morals set in place by the bible. This can be problematic. You see, people following God’s rules would not be doing so for the right reasons, instead they do it because they fear God’s wrath. This person would be unreliable in terms of morality, and would probably stray from God’s morals if they believed God would not offer a reward for their ‘good’ behavior.
Relativism is the belief that there is no absolute truth, that the only truth is what an individual or culture happen to believe. People who believe in relativism often think different people can have different views about what's moral and immoral. Cultural relativism, like moral relativism, filter through today's society. People often believe that as long no one gets hurt, everything will be okay. Realistically, the truth about relativism has been discarded along with God.
When one thinks about morals, he or she often find himself in difficulty. It is a fact that morals are mostly passed from one generation to another. However, we all face challenges when trying to understand whether they are all accurate or not. To start with, Morals are those values that normally protect life and always respectful of the dual life value of individual and others. Therefore, Morals are those rules that normally govern actions that re wrong or right. We know that morals may be for all people in the society or individual beliefs in the society. Some of the great morals include freedom, charity, truth, honesty and patience and all of them have a common goal. It is a fact that when they function well in the society, they end up protecting and enhancing life. These morals need to be examined always to make sure that they are performing their mission of protecting life. As a matter of fact, morals are derived from the government and society, self and religion. When morals are derived from the government and society, they tend to change as the morals and laws of the society changes. An example of the changes is seen in the cases of marriage versus individuals living together. It is true that in the past generation, it was quite rare to see any couple living together without having any legal matrimonial ceremony. However, this
Morality binds people into groups. It gives us tribalism; it gives us genocide, war, and politics. But it also gives us heroism, altruism, and sainthood (“Jonathan Haidt Quotes.”). This quote sums the importance of morality perfectly. Even though morality may not be beneficial when the lives of the many out way the lives of the few or if it endangers your own well-being, we have an obligation to understand the morality of different people whether it’s socially, culturally, or religiously. When we fail to take into account these difference we breed conflict and eventually war.
Morals are having principles or habits with respect to right or wrong conduct (“Morals”). Having morals is something that people can have or lack. In religion, believing in a god with morals is a necessity. In Ancient Greece, however, Greek religion believed in gods and goddesses with immoral behaviors.
What is morality? What is being moral? Is it just being able to make the decision from right and wrong making the right decisions from good and bad? There are many great philopshers who had their own ideas on morality. Immanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill, Aristotle and Virginia Held all had different ideas and or approaches to resolving ethical problems. Though each of them differs from each other they each have their own positive and negative attributes.
Women are blamed for men’s debauchery for being the source of seduction and responsible for humanity’s fall from grace and responsible for sins. In the bible, women are reprimanded by God, “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God…For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man," (I Corinthians 11:3-9) and making women submissive to men. For non-Western feminist, religion isn’t always as oppressive as one would expect, where women support religious movements, “Indian women’s movement, together with movements for secularism, democracy and human rights, has been crucial in boarding-base the struggle for women’s rights…,” (Razavi and Jenichen, 2014, pg. 335). Religious movements have played a crucial role in advocating for gender equality where women utilize wearing a veil as a way to, “express their frustrations at the failure of corrupt, Westernized elites who were perceived to have sold their country’s national interests…,” (Henderson and Jeydel, 2014, pg. 82) where many women join movements as a way to, “rebuilding the county in the wake of a tumultuous revolution,” (Henderson and Jeydel, 2014, pg. 82). Women have come to utilize the hijab as a way to end the constant
Typically many religious people claim that ethics and morality relies on what God rules them to be and fail to see that morality can still be just as significant to a person that doesn't believe in God. Theists, followers of God presume religion to be a substantial reason for our moral conduct. Nonbelievers such as atheists are still capable of understanding the difference between what is right and wrong without religion. John, believes that if there wasn't a higher power to give us the set rules and reasons of how to behave then anything we do would be measured equally. Whereas Andrea, who is against this theory points out that God is not the key for having moral values. Her argument seems to be more convincing because an atheist can still to do the right thing based on their own interest if it has a rational explanation for moral values. The only difference is that non-believers don't have a supreme ruler to measure the intensity of how moral their actions are. Doing the right or wrong thing should be justified on a level of whether or not your actions hurt or harm someone in any w...
Morality exists in order to keep society from turning into a chaotic mess, in which people cannot trust each other in exchanges or prevent actions such as murder.
Discrimination of women ins not a thing of the past, these examples show that oppression of women in religion is still practiced. This short essay clearly shows the inclination of religion toward the male species. Religion can escape this prehistoric way of thinking if only people of faith cared enough to exsurt the effort to create change. Religion needs activist’s agnist oppression because if no advances are made then the faithful followers of the sprirt are regressing to neatdral times. Religion has done good for the people of the world in the past, but it not meeting its potential because of the discrimination against half of its followers.
People should cultivate sincere concern for others and always try not to affect other people in a negative way. Doing so enables people to be happy and grow to their fullest potential. Morals are what keep the society from chaos. Without morals many crimes are made.
Morality is a term that refers to the creation of and adherence to rules that govern human behavior on the basis of some idea of right and wrong. Whatever your concept of morality, it must address the human capacity to identify and choose between right and wrong. Socrates believed that nobody willingly chooses to do wrong[1]. He maintained that doing wrong always harmed the wrongdoer and that nobody seeks to bring harm upon themselves. In this view all wrongdoing is the result of ignorance.
Women who have the misfortune of living in predominately Muslim societies often are confronted with adversities concerning their rights in marriage, divorce, education, and seclusion. Consequently, many Westerners seeing a lack of equality towards women in these societies consider it as a confirmation of their own misconceptions about Islam itself. Islam is often rejected as being an intolerant and violent religion that discriminates against and subjugates women, treating them as second-class citizens. From a Muslim’s perspective, Islam’s stance on women can be approached by two opposing views. Scholars amongst the Muslim apologists have claimed, “The verses in the Qur’an represented Muhammad's intention to improve a debased condition of women that prevailed during the Jahiliya, the time of ignorance before Islam came into being.” (Doumato, 177) If inequalities still exist between men and women, they cannot be attributed to Islam, but are a result of the misinterpretation of Islam’s true meaning. Others have entirely denied the notion of inequality between men and women in Islam, claiming that the alleged inequalities “are merely perceived as such by foreign observers who confuse seclusion and sex difference with inequality.” (Ibid.) Many Muslim apologists defend the Koran as noble for the very fact that it raises women to an equal status of men despite their inferiority.
“Descriptively, morality refers to certain codes of conduct put forward by a society or a group (such as a religion) or accepted by an individual for his/her own behavior. Normatively, it refers to a code of conduct that, given specified conditions, would be put forward by all rational persons.” (“What Is Moral Philosophy?”).
