The world of chemistry and science has always been fascinating to me. The scientific method has had a profound impact on every aspect of our lives since its inception. From Newton to Einstein, intellectual curiosity has been the most paramount resource for uncovering the mysteries of life. My selection of pharmacology as a career came mainly from my love for science and secondly, from a personal experience. I struggled with acne throughout my adolescent life and into my adulthood. My condition deteriorated to the point where my dermatologist prescribed me Accutane after alternative treatments failed to produce results. Although I knew Accutane was a strong medication with serious side effects, I didn't know what components the drug consisted of or how it would react with the cells in my body until I studied organic chemistry. During the course of my study, I learned that Accutane is a retinoid that decreases the size and activity of the sebaceous glands in the skin, which reduces the amount of sebum produced. Looking back on this experience, I now see how not having a clear face affe...
Science and logic underpins the biomedical approach to health and illness. Willis and Elmer (2011) point out that biomedicine focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of individual anatomical structures of the body, with heavy references to science and medicine. According to the biomedical approach, the major cause of melanoma is the excessive exposure of the skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the ...
This paper discusses pharmacology and terminology related to “Pharmacology” which is the branch of medicine concerned with the uses, effects, and modes of action of drugs“ pharmacology. 2015. In Merriam-Webster.com. The study of different classes of drugs, routes of absorption, and drugs have effects on those consuming them. The first known use of dermatology was established in 1819 and only in the 1930’s did its practice become more widely accomplished, known and sought after. (“Dermatology” 2014) Since then it has extensively evolved and changed and been able to provide services for women and men around the world. Originally being a part of the medicine field can now be considered a division of the beauty industry due to availability of services and treatments for aesthetic, pampering purposes, rather than just originally founded for medical issues of resolving skin disorders and diseases. Dermatology being defined as ‘a branch of medicine dealing with the skin, its structure, functions and diseases’ (“Dermatology” 2014) now offers many professions one being a dermatologist, whic...
...ective results while others see minor or temporary clearing. Generally, the best and effective treatments in the best of conditions results in only 50% reduction in acne. That is why, skin specialists are looking for and are trying combined treatments which can prove effective and help the skin stay clear longer.
I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Being part of this program gives one the opportunity to gain an excellent experience in working and collaborating with various health care providers in the ward. But more importantly, it facilitates a practical environment in dealing more closely with patients. Hence, it helps to provide the ultimate health care services to patients. Also, it permits me to carry on gaining different knowledge, skills, and values in addition to those I have already developed during my undergraduate studies. My interest in being a clinical pharmacist was first aroused during my SPEP rotation in the hospital setting where I was really impressed with the role of clinical pharmacists who provide a consistent process of patient care with healthcare teams to maintain the appropriateness, effectiveness and safety of the medication use. Unlike a pharmacist, a clinical pharmacist has a more diversified responsibilities and closeness to direct patient care. Moreover, provides
What would you give to rid yourself of acne? What would you do? The bane of every adolescent’s existence, these red spots develop to some degree in 85% of the population between ages 12 and 25 (Lamberg). Teenagers wake up every morning, look at the mirror, and sigh at the acne on their faces and often other places on their bodies. They dread these awful things that are absolutely ugly. They get desperate and eventually, if the acne grows worse than ever before, they resort to Accutane. Accutane, also known as isotretinoin, is a medication for acne. However, despite isotretinoin’s helpfulness in controlling acne that is unresponsive to other treatments, this medication should not be used because of its harmful physical side effects, its association with psychiatric adverse effects, and its effects on reproduction.
Pre-clinical testing is performed to Good laboratory practice (GLP) and covers pivotal toxicology & safety pharmacology studies. In preclinical research, scientists test their ideas for new biomedical prevention strategies in laboratory experiments or in animals.

This treatment is considered to be effective for the removal of acne scars. This avoids the use of taking medicines and applying ointments. However, the treatment must be done by an experienced and specially traine...
With the increased cost of manufacturing, pharmaceutical companies have been divesting in their smaller or less profit making operations and focus on large segments. Many Pharmaceutical companies sold their manufacturing sites to contract manufacturing organizations. The dynamics of interfacing with contract manufacturing organization added intricacy in pharmaceutical supply chain network of pharmaceutical companies.
At present, cosmetics are always used in daily life. When we talk about cosmetics, most people will think of the things that only use for make-up such as lipstick, eye-shadow, mascara, blusher etc. But in fact cosmetics are not only mean to the things that only use for make-up but also shampoo, lotion or sunscreen. Moreover, cosmetics are also useful for users.
Being a pharmacist means entering into a diverse yet extremely rewarding field of work. Pharmacists are heavily involved in the preparation and dispensing of medicinal drugs. However, some pharmacists are involved in the actual research and development for the pharmaceutical manufacturers. Pharmacists fall into the Health Science career cluster. As of right now, the demand for pharmacists is going up at a steady rate due to the rapid expansion of the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries (Job Outlook for Pharmacists). Pharmacists are generally stationed in one location for the duration of their work. Unless of course a pharmacist is leaving to study more on efficient ways to work, info on new drugs, etc.. Pharmacists work year round doing virtually the same thing they started doing. Give or take a few new or old drugs being introduced there is not significant amounts of change that happens in this occupation regarding time such as peak times. Although, it could be argued that during some seasons there is more of a demand for prescription drugs to be given out because it might be a “sick season”. Therefore, this would cause a “peak” period. Most pharmacists generally work 40 hours a week. As with all professions though there are pharmacists, around 12%, that work more than 50 hours per week (Pharmacists - What They Do). Being a pharmacist requires a fairly decent amount of well tuned motor skills. This is simply because a pharmacist with shaky hands can overprescribe someone due to maybe giving more than the intended amount. The starting salary for a Pharmacist is between $81,000-$113,000 a year (Job Outlook for Pharmacists). Pharmacists are considered to have one of the most well paid health care jobs in the industry. They ca...
Drug is a chemical which alters the processes in the organism, which is used in the medicine for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the diseases (Farlex, 2011). Drug discovery is a long term process that needs money investment. The process of drug investigation takes approximately from 9 to 15 years during which the number of chemicals that can become drug is reduced from 10,000 to 1-2 (Saparov, 2011). Even after manufacturing the drug is studied by scientists for modifying its structure, delivery and effects on the organism. Drug discovery consists of several stages which help to examine its effectiveness and side effects.
Teens are more likely to jump from one acne treatment to another to an effective acne remedy. Teens who are upset about the state of their skin mostly use the topical treatments in excess in an attempt to speed the clearing of their skin. it is important for the teens to understand that any acne treatment, including the over the counter products need to be used as directed on the label. Applying them too often or in excess could cause dryness, redness, peeling, irritation and can worsen the situation, hence increasing the healing time of the acne.
Molecular pharmacology deals with the biochemical and biophysical characteristics of interactions between molecules of different substances and those of the cell. In other words, it is molecular biology applied to pharmacologic and toxicologic questions. The methods of molecular pharmacology include precise mathematical, physical, chemical and molecular biological techniques to understand how cells respond to hormones or pharmacologic agents, and how chemical structure correlates with biological activity of various
