I view my life as a puzzle; picking up pieces through my beliefs, experiences and passions and placing them in their designated positions. It is not until I created the border and most of the middle that I can began to see what my puzzle is meant to become. My picture is starting to show that I am meant to help people, specifically through the legal capacity. Author Jen Leaman wrote, “The human race is like a puzzle: Everyone fits in somewhere, it just takes a while to figure it out”. Raised in Browns Mills, New Jersey, although as a military family we have struggled. Several bouts of experiencing homelessness have only pushed me to work hard so my family and I no longer have to struggle. These hardships I have added the borders (my values and work ethic) to my puzzle. Although nowhere near complete attending, Emory law will continue to influence and add pieces to my puzzle.
My first confrontation with widespread racism occurred during high school, an experience that first motivated me to attend law school. Attending a culturally diverse school, racial differences had never been a problem until sophomore year. It was then I, an African-American, was confronted with the glaring realization that racism against persisted. My majority African-American cheerleading squad attended a football game where barraged by the home team’s spectators screaming racial slurs as we entered. At the end of the game, a racially motivated brawl ensued. I was livid, astonished and confused. That night I learned that although discrimination laws have changed, there remain pockets of society that have not changed with it. My personal and educational growth in college and subsequent professional experience provided an avenue for a career choice, working in law. I have learned that the law protects on all levels from the multi-million dollar client to the single mom who can barely feed her children. It is through this that I can continue to make a difference in my and others’ lives. Emory Law offers me the opportunity to further my goals through its International Humanitarian Law Clinic, Volunteer Clinic for Veterans, and the multiple of chances to help others through my blossoming legal knowledge while in school. All of these would add pieces of my puzzle and help bring into focus the bigger picture of my puzzle. Through attending Emory Law I will continue to create change through helping and ultimately find where I fit in this greater human puzzle.
Despite the passing of the Civil Rights Act and Affirmative Action, racism evolved from the blatant discrimination of the 1960s like segregation, to the slightly more passive racism of the 1990s such as unfair arrests/jail time (Taylor). Curtis’ writes three decades after the aforementioned progress and yet, looking back on the 90s, there is an alarming amount of similarities between the two.
From beginning to end the reader is bombarded with all kinds of racism and discrimination described in horrific detail by the author. His move from Virginia to Indiana opened a door to endless threats of violence and ridicule directed towards him because of his racial background. For example, Williams encountered a form of racism known as modern racism as a student at Garfield Elementary School. He was up to win an academic achievement prize, yet had no way of actually winning the award because ?The prize did not go to Negroes. Just like in Louisville, there were things and places for whites only? (Williams, 126). This form of prejudice is known as modern racism because the prejudice surfaces in a subtle, safe and socially acceptable way that is easy to rationalize.
In 1994, renowned college professor Nikki Giovanni published an awe-inspiring article. It contains guidance to black college students on how to academically apply themselves in college, and she teaches them how to deal with the ignorance of white people, from sharp tongued comebacks to gaining a professor’s respect. Along the way, the article “Campus Racism 101” states Giovanni has acquired a tenure, she has a teaching position for life, at the predominately white student body Virginia Tech (Giovanni 11). Nikki Giovanni’s “Campus Racism 101” uses logic when giving advice to black students on how to succeed in college, appeals to Giovanni’s credibility, and appeals to the emotions of racism all in order to educate how black college students need to deal with ignorance on a college campus.

In Brent Staples’ narrative, he asserts the fact that society has stereotypical and discriminatory views towards black males, which has caused him to experience distasteful encounters leading him to behave in a very careful and docile manner around others in public spaces. Personally I agree with Brent Staples, the misjudgment and stereotypes that are enforced on certain races has caused there to be an unnecessary disruption and uneasiness in the daily life and activities of such people. Racism is not only a crime against humanity, but a daily burden that weighs down many shoulders. Racism has haunted America ever since the founding of the United States, and has eerily followed us to this very day. As an intimidating looking black man living in a country composed of mostly white people, Brent Staples is a classic victim of prejudice. The typical effect of racism on an African American man such as Staples, is a growing feeling of alienation and inferiority; the typical effect of racism on a white person is fear and a feeling of superiority. While Brent Staples could be seen as a victim of prejudice because of the discrimination he suffers, he claims that the victim and the perpetrator are both harmed in the vicious cycle that is racism. Staples employs his reader to recognize the value of his thesis through his stylistic use of anecdotes, repetition and the contrast of his characterization.
Attending the University of Houston Law Center would afford me the opportunity to gain an education I know only they could offer. The University of Houston is a first-tier institution that constantly produces superior talent that continuously excels in all fields of law. Earning my degree of jurisprudence would be the crowning achievement in my life, but knowing that I couldn’t be able to use it effectively would be as equally disappointing. Coming full circle, I’d use my degree to make a difference for those privileged and those who aren’t alike. The realm of law is where I feel I belong and I’m eager to prove myself.

... integrity. Through the Community Action Program I visited two third grade classes at the elementary school that my company sponsors. The school is sorely lacking in funds and many of the children come from homes where their families are struggling to provide them with the skills necessary to succeed in school. I taught the students for five weeks about the variety of skills one must learn to run a business and how various businesses are needed for a city to function. Each classroom was comprised entirely of children from one of two different ethnic groups, but both were from homes where English was not the first language. I believe my affinity for developing relationships with and between people will be an asset both in the classroom and in the legal profession. I look forward to rising to the challenge of constant change and growth in the ever-evolving field of law.
The socio-historical platforms of racism in America have been rigorously challenged by critical race scholars in an effort to shed light on an ongoing battle between freedom and racism. Critical race feminists, even more so, have grappled with issues concerning interesctionality and womanhood as African American women residing in the U.S.. When we look at the issue of racism from a politically correct, nineties perspective, evidence of the oppression of black people may be obscured by the ways in which our society deals with the inequalities that still exist. There are no apparent laws that prohibit or limit opportunities for blacks in our society today, yet there is a sense that all things are not fair and equal. How can we acknowledge or just simply note how past ideologies are still perpetuated in our society today? We can examine conditions of the present day in consideration of events in the past, and draw correlations between old and modern modes of thinking. Attitudes of racism within the institutions of education, employment and government are less blatant now than in the day of Frederick Douglass, none the less, these attitudes prevail.
I found that visiting the law school and observing the criminal law class was an invaluable experience for me. The opportunity has motivated me further to achieve my goal of attending law school at ASU. I look forward to the chance of becoming a part of the law school community.
Furthermore, polls conducted over the years have found that many Americans still harbor beliefs about racial and ethnic minorities that are based on racist stereotypes (Nesbitt, 2016).
