Growing up, I was the oldest of siblings in a middle class family. My mother got married young and never had the opportunity to continue her higher education. My father was the “earn and learn” kind of a person, who took up part-time jobs in order to support his education and became an engineer. I was born in a family where hard work, devotion, honesty, humility and being in touch with one’s roots was the daily staple-diet. My parents devoted every second of their life and sacrificed every personal luxury, so that their children could have the opportunity they never had - a chance to pursue formal higher education without having to worry for funds. The toil of their life has paid off: they raised two engineers and a doctor. I grew up in these values of selfless love and learnt early on what the importance of hard work was.
It was the notion of selflessness that made me choose medicine as a profession. By the time I completed my high school, I was certain that serving others was what I wanted to pursue in my life. Being a doctor is more than just a profession for me. During the medical wards in third year of my medical school, I came across a little girl on a stretcher who had multiple

Since then, I have had amazing experiences, not just in my personal life, but also in my professional career. From being an intern, to teaching medical students, to becoming a wife and a mother, to moving to the United States and familiarizing myself with its health care system, I have grown immensely. My experiences have helped me become a more mature person who is ready and confident to conquer the challenges of residency. I believe every challenge I encounter is an opportunity to grow. I am more responsible, patient, perseverant, and most importantly, someone who enjoys multitasking. I know I will rely on my skills that I have developed as I continue to grow as a physician and do my best to heal every single patient I
I knew I wanted to work with people; I wanted further involvement, I wanted to see the results of my hard work, I wanted to make a difference in others lives. I went back to school to become a Surgical Technologist. As a student, I accepted a job at the hospital I interned at. After being in the operating room all day, I constantly was asking to stay late to finish a case or help with whatever needed to be done. I fell in love right away with this new profession.
When I was born, my family had just migrated to California from Mexico. In a new country, my father worked in landscaping earning less than $4 dollars an hour, while my mother relied on public transportation to take her newborn child to and from doctor visits. In the land of opportunity, my family struggled to put a roof over our heads. But never discouraged, my parents sought to achieve their goals and worked tirelessly to raise my younger brother and I. From a young age, I was taught the importance of education; this became a major catalyst in my life. My desire to excel academically was not for self-gain, but my way of contributing to my family’s goals and aspirations.
As a foreigner growing up in a different country and attending college for the first time in the United States, it was important that I create an opportunity to pursue a career in the health care profession. Some of the obstacles I have faced while starting my college career were English as a second language, time management, and working full time while pursuing a degree. However, last but most importantly, being a good mother while trying to juggle it all.

College is quickly approaching, so it is time I finalize what I want to do with my future. I have always wanted to be a nurse, but being a physician’s assistant has recently caught my eye. For the past year or so, I have been torn between the two because although they are both in the medical field, they come with many differences. Nurses and physician assistants take time out of their day to put other people’s lives above theirs and have fairly similar hours, but the process it takes to get there, the pay, the daily duties, and the average day are all significantly different. Even though both are different in the more technical aspects of things, they both have equally important roles in the medical field.

I did not go on that path but I always had the desire. I am on my way to become a medical assistant (MA) because of this reason.
Certainly, the requirements for the arts class were easily achievable but I was not impassioned with serving mankind by apportioning justice. At that moment, I made a decision, that my desire to study medicine outweighed any potential challenges that could present themselves and so, I decided to be a medical doctor.
My maternal grandfather has placed a large emphasis on education, which has influenced the next two generations. My grandfather grew up poor but eventually attended Dartmouth College, Harvard Medical School, and went on to teach at Yale University. My grandfather credits his success to his schooling, making it a priority for his children and grandchildren. Because of his push for education, all of his five children graduated college, as well as eleven of his grandchildren. My father’s parents however, never placed much value on education, which resulted in my father not pursuing further education after high school. The absence of education on my father’s side is relevant since shortly after my brother visited my father in Florida, he originally decided to not attend college but to work instead. Upon returning to Connecticut, he realized the importance of education and decided to enroll in

Ever since I started understanding things and as I processed maturity, I grasped that the human body is an incredible thing and it has always come to my mind that how it works and responds to things is very fascinating. I think that public health is really important because it will help me know which communities would need help preventing certain illnesses or just simply help them build there foundation to becoming a healthy community. The field was really interesting to me when it came up in a conversation with my sister and she told me switch from biology to public health. Also, I didn’t really know what to do in the future with a Bio major. So I thought that public health focused on many of my interest that I would have in the field.
I made the decision to join the health care field based on my own desire, love of the people that live and thrive around me, and to be a role model for my daughter. I feel it is important to have a goal in life, and it is important to me to show my daughter the value of goals, and achieving them as well. I love meeting new people, and being able to lend a helping hand in any way I possibly can. What better way to help the general population then to have a profession in the health care industry.
