Personal Statement: To whom it may concern. I am aware that my grades have dropped and my GPA lowered under a 2.0. This is my own lack of concentration. My grades have been suffering because I have had to manage between work and school. In August of 2015 my mother passed away suddenly due to a heart attack. It was several days before the semester began. It was a huge set back after my father had to quit his job to now look over my younger brother full time. I was trying to take on a full course load while looking for a full time job. I realized that I had too much on my plate. The stress of keeping my family out of the slumps and getting the bills paid affected my sleep schedule. This interfered with my lack of concentration no my studies.
My name is Kaha Salad and I am appealing my Satisfactory Academic Progress suspension. Autumn semester of 2013 was a difficult time for me, I was going through many different changes in my life and I just didn’t know how to adapt. I experienced a personal event in the summer of 2013 that made my life change forever. My Grandmother Khadija died, she was the light of my family’s lives. My mother was immensely affected by her death, she went into a state of depression and she then stopped working. I took it upon myself to help out my grieving mother and get a job to help pay with the bills that was piling up. I began working
While points, claims, and statistics may be found within all of the sources used for the research, the sheer amount of referenced studies and works within the “Sleep-Wake” paper lends weight to it’s usefulness as a reliable source. One of the otherfactor of sleep and its affect within the college community. Three sources varying in criteria and usefulness were found that related to this subject and were studied. sources, “College Students try to Cheat Sleep Needs”, a college newspaper, offers basic facts and elementary assumptions such that could be found within any biology textbook or encyclopedia. These references are to such things as sleep cycles and sub stages and the general consequences of an out of balance sleep cycle. The study from the Biological Rhythm Research writers, however, hints at previous studies and findings that “several factors, such as social and academic demands, part-time jobs, [...] affect the sleep-wake cycle of college students.” but then only states the findings of a particular study, and does so in...
At the outset of college, orientation, I was not so thrilled. Number one because Mason likes most everyone else was my second choice. I had hope to get into UVA but I knew my grade point average went to *censored* my senior year and it wasn't going to happen. So here I am sitting I the theater in the basement of Johnson Center listening to some old guy, whose brown suede jacket and bright pink shirt are making me dizzy, go on and on about the honor code. Don't cheat, gees that's a new concept. The night finished up with some cheesy get to know you class dance and sleeping in the dorms at Wilson. Ah the smell of stagnant air that had not been circulated in four months. Combine that with a super soft sinking mattress and one can image the kind of sleep I got. It made staying home and working at Wal-Mart looking more and more like a wise career move.
Humans are creatures that spent more time looking for the distraction from work than actually working. Humans are naturally easily distracted and need something to help us focus on the tasks at hand. Two stories that clearly reflect this are "Stopping by Woods on a snowy evening" by Robert Frost and "Effort by Distraction" by Josephine Miles. In Frost 's story, it shows how humans are easily distracted so we need something so push us forward the goal in mind. Mile 's poem supports this by explaining on how humans focus more on trying to distract themselves than actually working and paying attention. My artifact extends the meaning of my poem because it analyzes how humans are naturally lazy and how we need to push ourselves to continue working.
The fastest growing form of communication in America’s society is texting. David Mercer brings up a valid argument about how the appearance of texting was not a slow process, parents never had an opportunity to experience texting so they have no way of teaching their children how to use it responsibly (Carter). Texting is so common it carries over into our everyday lives easily and at times becomes controlling. America’s society thrives on the conveniences texting provides us. While texting is fast and convenient it has numerous faults that affect our society mentally and socially. Texting can be beneficial as it simplifies our lives at times; however, there are numerous negative effects texting has on our society.
When the mind’s need of rest is not met, it accumulates “sleep debt” that cannot be fixed by a single sleep period. “The brain keeps an accurate count of sleep debt for at least two weeks” (Myers, DeWall 107). Many college students experience sleep deprivation which results in fatigue during the day. Whether or not it’s because of roommates, or your own habits, sleep deprivation is a problem. Although sleep is often overlooked and not considered a significant event--since it should normally occur every day--it is a necessity for all humans as well as animals. “It is said that young animals can go longer without food than sleep” (Johnson 88). This statement shows just how important of a role sleep is in life. “Approximately 70% of college students report disturbances in sleep including poor sleep quality, insufficient sleep, and irregular sleep patterns” (DeMartini, Fucito 1164). Most of the time college students experience difficulties with sleep because of their varying schedules. On the weekdays, students will sleep between classes, and stay up late trying to get work done. On the weekends, they stay up late and wake later in the day. “According to the National Sleep Foundation, 59% of adults 18 to 29 years of age describe themselves as night-owls” (Gaultney 91). Our bodies are synchronized with the 24-hour cycle due to the circadian rhythm (Myers, DeWall 100). If students cannot fall asleep early because their “biological clock” is messed up due to stress or other reasons, they cannot get enough sleep by the time the morning comes. Research has shown that typically people who get up earlier perform better in school, have more initiative and are less likely to be depressed (Myers, DeWall 101). Other factors of sleep deprivation could fall into the social category. College students tend to like to enjoy life, and party. This is something a college student can
On week days I tend to be in bed around 11:00pm and plan to be asleep by midnight. Falling asleep by midnight is usually accomplished on each weeknight, with an occasional late night study session. I am fortunate enough to be able to sleep later than I have been in past semesters. We have not had our usual 6:00am morning team lifting for crew and I do not have many early classes. It is not difficult for me to wake up once I hear my alarm in the morning. When I know I have something to complete or somewhere to be I am able to jump right out of bed and get ready. While filling out my Stanford Sleepiness rating times, I was able to give myself scores bet...
This one being your first year in college, you may have trouble concentrating while you study. Some techniques that can help your concentration are being selective, relaxing, and over learning. Being selective means to make choices about what is most important to learn. When you are studying, you should be able to know what may or may not be on the test, your notes for the week can be helpful. In addition, pay attention to charts, tables, and illustrations that you think may appear on the test. Relaxing is a good technique to use because when you are relaxed you are able to absorb more information. One way to relax is to use a breathing technique (inhale, count from one to ten, and exhale, and count from one to ten, and so on). Over learning can help you fight mental vagueness. When you are struggling in a class, it is best for you to learn more than you need to know about the subject. You can use these techniques every time you are studying or when you cannot concentrate.
It was almost midnight on a school night during my freshman year of high school and I had just laid down in bed after getting

My intense passion for learning has shifted my life in a new and positive direction. I feel that my personal experiences and challenges have served as a basis for growth and preparation for a life of helping others. This is why I have worked so hard to complete my undergraduate education despite my many responsibilities. I believe that this makes me a great candidate for this program. I am a diligent and attentive person who deeply cares for others in need. I feel that everything that has brought me to where I am today has shaped my life and will make me a great social worker. I want to thank you very much for considering my application for the master of social work program.
There were many days I needed to stay after school for a test retake or just for some help. I thought that because I had a job now, I couldn’t put my school first. I made this mistake many times. I took a Chemistry unit test and did not do so well on the test, the teacher had retakes the following days after school. Of course I had to work all those days.

At the age of 36, mom decided to return to college to obtain her nursing degree. This wasn’t a hard decision for her to make. In April before she enrolled in school, my great grandmother passed away. This major dilemma played a major role in mom’s return to school. She had taken care of my great grandmother for months before she passed away, and decided that she wanted to make an impact on the lives of geriatrics.
On our first day of school, I arrived 5:30 in the morning and because it is the first day
