I would love the opportunity to study nursing as I feel that it will lead me down one of the most demanding and fulfilling career paths. My ambition is to become a mental health nursing due to my own minor issues with anxiety and the fact that a number of my friends and family members have also had mental health issues throughout their life's and this has given me a better understanding of how mental health issues can affect people and has allowed me to realise that your mental health is just as important as your physical health. One in four people will suffer with a mental health problem at some point in their lives and I would love the opportunity to help people during such difficult times in order to enable them to get there lives back on …show more content…
During this training I learned the best way to assist people while walking and getting from sitting to standing. I also learned how to operate transfer equipment such as hoists and slings. I feel that my time at the nursing home inspired me further to pursue a career in nursing. I am also taking part in a HNC Care and Administrations course at college this year which will give me more experience working in the care sector and will also give me a deeper understanding of the academic requirements of nursing. I currently volunteer at the Salvation army charity shop in Kilmarnock. As part of my duties I make sure the shop is tidy, help with the inventory, sort out new items to be put on the shop floor and assist with customers that require help. I also work on the till. I feel that this has given me the change to meet different people and has greatly increased my communication skills as well as giving me the opportunity to volunteer for an organisation that's helping to make a difference to peoples lives throughout the world. Working as a team was extremely important when trying to organise such an event and I feel that this has help to develop my skills when working with others, I have gained considerable confidence from taking part in these concerts. I also took part in my schools fair trade group where we were given the task to raise money in order to give a farmer in the third world country the chance to send their child to school. We achieved this by setting up stalls during parents evenings and the schools Christmas concert where we sold fair trade chocolate, rice and cooking recipes. In both primary and secondary I was chosen as a perfect. My role was to monitor one of the school stairwells to help prevent any problems from occurring. I was chosen as I was found to be responsible and mature enough to be trusted in this important role. I have also successfully completed Peer Support Training and because of this I was chosen to help the first year pupils settle into the school. During my career as a mental health nurse I would like to work with adolescents in both community and hospital settings as well as use my skills to take part in some humanitarian aid
I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. At the end of a long shift, it is a rewarding profession, knowing that I am saving people’s lives, making them comfortable when they are near of dying, advocate and teaching them. As nurses, we care for patients through illness, injury, aging, health. We also promote health, prevent diseases and teaching the community; that’s what I love about nursing. I believe that this is the right profession for me because I have all the qualities that a nurse should possess when
When I am older I would love to be a Nurse Practitioner, I enjoy helping people when they are sick and taking care of them. Another reason I want to be a Nurse Practitioner is because my sister is also a Nurse Practitioner.
Ever since I was a little girl, my motivation to pursue a career in the medical field was evident. While other children my age watched Cartoon Network, I found more value in shows like ‘Trauma: Life in the ER’ and ‘A Baby Story.’ It wasn’t until high school that I decided I would become a nurse, specifically. I cannot say that I had a revelation or a particular experience that swayed my decision. However, ever since I began pursuing the career of nursing, I discover each and every subsequent day that it is what I was put on this earth to do.
During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. I am now absolutely certain that I am meant to be a pediatric nurse. Cook Children’s is recognized as a Magnet-designated hospital and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the US. Being a Cook Children’s nurse resident would allow me to fulfill my passion and dream of pediatric nursing. I am interested in a nurse residency at Cook Children’s because of its excellent reputation in patient satisfaction, standard of care, and community involvement. A residency at Cook Children’s would allow me to gain more experience and know...
The opportunity to expand and refine my nursing knowledge has always equated to me attending the University of Alabama School of Nursing’s masters program. With their master’s degree programs earning the number one spot for Top 50 Best Value, the quality of the programs is undeniable. I selected to apply to the psychiatric mental health track because during my undergraduate studies, I realized this was a career worthy study. My brother was diagnosed with bipolar/schizophrenia at fifteen, and I always questioned his lack of motivation and self-care abilities. It was not until taking the Concepts of Behavioral Health Nursing, that I realized the existence of positive and negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, and that apathy and learning disabilities were just as much a part of my brother’s illness as hallucinations or delusions. According to Akiko (2004) “Severity of negative symptoms was significantly associated with worse performance on attention/working memory,”(p. 750). With this
Humanity presents individuals with extraordinary gifts as well as weaknesses. Growing up I realized this notion as I gave insulin shots to my younger brother and reminded him to check his blood consistently throughout the day. I was determined to fight this battle with him through researching alternative medicine options and attending his doctor’s appointments. This life experience enlightened me on my compassion for individuals with health issues and my passion for management and prevention of chronic diseases. As a nurse practitioner, my major goal is to help others like my family through properly educating patients and their families while being a source of comfort and strength in their time of distress.
Psychiatric nursing has always been my passion and I am ready to put my experience and leadership skills to use and further my career as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. The psychiatric population is underserved and one of my goals is to continue working in fields others will not. I have always longed for the increased autonomy and decision making Nurse Practitioners use. Broken systems and burnt out mental health workers are a problem. For example, calling an on call physician in a patient crisis only to be given an order for something that is completely useless by a physician who does not care, has always bothered me. I look up to the Nurse Practitioners at work and have always noticed their kind, caring and responsive nature. I want
I want to be a nurse, specifically a nurse practitioner. I have always been fascinated with the medical field and see a bright future in it for me. I have the opportunity of meeting new people every day with a variety of personalities. There is always something new to discover in this field. A nurse practitioner's job is to be able to diagnose and treat illnesses. They also prescribe medicine and run physical exams. I am highly interested in pursuing the career of a nurse practitioner because the healthcare field is always in need for medical professionals, it pays well, and I am helping people at the same time.
My calling in life has always been clear to me, in my heart I have always known that I wanted to become a part of the medical field. Ever since I was a little girl I have admired the men and women who work in this field. Their drive and compassion to help those in need inspire me to become a future Registered Nurse. One of the many individuals within this field who has inspired me is Alfred Lopez a Registered Nurse at the California Institution for Women. He is 45 years old and has received his Bachelor 's degree in nursing from UCLA. As a nurse he provides exemplary care without judgement or bias towards those who are convicted as felons and criminals. He is a respectable and good natured man that lends an unbiased helping hand to all, despite what they have done in this life. This is why I strive to one day join the field of nursing because in this field every patient is treated equally among one another.
As a teenager, my aunt once lived with us and I remember my dad said vividly “Aunty X is ill and will be with us for a little while, let’s provide her with all the necessary support she needs”, however; my dad never disclosed the type of ailment she was suffering from. I was home alone with my dad as my other siblings were already studying in the university. During the period of providing care, I observed some strange and unexplainable behaviour in her. For example, she left the stove on with nothing on it, she was observed to have poor concentration, and poor hygiene, talks to self and very suspicious of others.
I am pursuing nursing because it is a combination of helping and teaching others, applying science, and giving back to society- all while making a good, secure living with plenty of options. To me, the core of nursing is to help patients feel better physically and emotionally as much as possible. In my mind, nursing should focus on improving health and quality of life for patients, both by directly caring for them and by doing research and advocacy. My vision for myself is that as a nurse, I will learn to balance quality with efficiency, to take care of patients comprehensively, to be a good teammate, and to promote the integrity of healthcare.
What is it that makes choosing a career so difficult? Is it the fact that many people mainly choose a career they live off for the rest of their lives? Or is it just that they are scared of the difficulties and obstacles that will come through their path? Many students choose the usual careers: nursing, doctors, mechanics, or just working at a gas station. It all depends on where and if the student decides to go to college and what degree they are looking forward to earning.
I choose to be a Family Nurse Practitioner. In many ways, it has also chosen me. I was twelve years old when I first thought of becoming a nurse. I was spending time with my elderly neighbor who was like a grandmother to me, and she had an accident. She was mortified. I ran over and got something to clean it up and started to wipe up the mess without thinking about it. “We all have accidents,” I said. After she got changed she said, “You were meant to be a nurse. Some day you will be, I just know it.” She passed away later that year and I have never forgotten that moment.
Nursing is an amazing career and I am beyond blessed and excited to go through this journey in my life to become a nurse! There is nothing I love more than doing my best to help people. I would love to continue my education someday and further myself into another career branched off of nursing. I cannot wait to see the future that is in store for me!
