"Mother knows best". My mother is one of the main reasons why nutrition is vital in my life. I am very grateful that everyday she made sure our family sat down and enjoyed a nutritious meal together. I remember watching her prepare our meals after we would harvest fruits and vegetables from our backyard in the Philippines. As I grew up in California, she continued to emphasize the advantages of eating healthy. The experiences I had since my childhood shaped my interest in helping others create nourishing relationships between food and families. She herself is a dietitian and she is my greatest inspiration for my chosen path.
My interests in nutrition stemmed from a life-changing event. When my grandmother passed away due to complications of Type II Diabetes, I realized a strong correlation existing between diet, lifestyle, and disease. Coming from the Philippines, I was familiar with the challenges low-income families face such as food security and malnutrition. The signs became clearer as I got into college, where I began envisioning myself as a future dietitian who could impact lives by bringing attention to the risks factors of child malnutrition and the benefits of diabetes prevention. I have absorbed a lot of knowledge at WIC, but have much more to learn. It has always been in my nature to serve communities. Since I am fluent in Tagalog and have a background speaking Spanish, I am able to assist the community. Participant demographic mainly consists of 90% Hispanic. I designed a visual chart for new trainees to use at the front desk, which helps the clinic flow at a more efficient, effortless pace. Our Assistant Director admired my enthusiasm at work, extended praise for the noticeable improvements, and acknowledged increased productivity at my WIC site. All in all, this book is a great read for those seeking to learn more about food and how it relates to all aspects of life and history as well as find that extra push in taking the initiative in improving one’s eating habits and lifestyle. It serves as an easy to follow introduction into a healthy relationship with food including with simple guidelines that are not too forceful or complex to understand.

Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.

Based on a variety of personal experiences, I became very interested in the role of foods and nutrition. During my last year of highschool, my favorite who had a successful business succumbed to a strange alliment. He was tired all the time and was diagnosed to live only 1 year. While he didn't have cancer, his bloodwork had many abnormalites the doctors couldn't diagnose. He began to seek out other doctors who ultimately recommended that his see a dietitian. This changed his life. He started to eat low fat foods thats packed in vitamins, quit smoking and drinking and started to exercise regular bases. One year later, he could get out of bed, live as an full energetic person as he had before. This made him inspired to study nutrition in America. I was overwhelmed after I knew his history and never looked at food the same way again. It is clear to me now that how people eat and what people eat is an important factor in acheving optimum health, that just exercise isn't enough.

Nutrition plays a huge role in multiple facets of a person’s life energy, health, skin, weight, confidence, and more making having a good control on your eating habits extremely important. Nutrition is an important key to learn and understand in your life while you get older. Many people do not know the proper diet and exercise to keep their body healthy and strong. Throughout this course, I have learned information on different kinds of vitamins, carbohydrates, amino acids and other helpful diets. After reading and logging my dietary log for a week it has helped me re-organize my diet and health. I have learned about how to personally manage my exercise and diet and I am seeing some good results because of what I learned from this class. My undergraduate degree in Human Biology, emphasis in Nutritional Sciences, has given me a foundation of knowledge that could be expanded upon through the Clinical Dietetics master degree and supervised practice program at Grand Valley State University. The ASCEND accredited DPD program at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay fully prepares students, myself included, for a career in the Nutrition field. My professors facilitated learning while meeting the requirements of the certification with a rigorous cutting-edge curriculum. My degree focused on the Human body as a whole, while honing in on nutritional processes, advancements in nutrition research, and the various issues that future nutritional professionals may face. It was a well rounded program that encompassed all facets of the nutrition field with coursework in: community nutrition, food science, quantity food preparation, nutritional biochemistry, life cycle nutrition, and advanced nutrition and metabolism as one of the only undergraduate programs in the nation to teach upper-level concepts in nutrigenomics.
