As I sit down to write this personal statement to apply for residency at your institution, I am overwhelmed by the fact that it plays such an important part in what could be a life-altering decision for my career. I have so much to share, so many events that have transpired in my life to define who I am as a person and my goals and aspirations. Despite being faced with exorbitant patient volumes, poor hygiene and sanitary conditions, lack of diagnostic modalities and lack of affordable treatment options, my love for the profession grew. I saw each day as an opportunity to save lives, impact positively in the life of my patients by working against all odds to deliver the best patient care, and to be a trendsetter for change. The most gratifying part was my interaction with the patients, each with a unique story to unravel on the events that had befallen them and how they ended up under my care. However the looming issue over our heads was the much needed change in healthcare structure and system, and this is what prompted me to concurrently seek a graduate degree in public health so that I could one day live the vision that I had built for Kenya and other underprivileged countries – A nation that advocates for greater human rights in healthcare through egalitarian distribution of its resources; a workforce that was trained in emergency preparedness and response; and a country equipped with state of the art diagnostic and treatment

As researchers continue to delve into the nit gritty of molecular medicine to unravel the causes and potential treatments of disease, it gives one hope that we will one day be able to lessen the disease burden caused by some of the greatest health problems like cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
