Personal Statement: A Personal Philosophy Of School Counseling

School counseling is important to me because I believe all students should have a safe place to come to if they are having any mental health or school issues. When I was a young child, I started to act out in school as my parents were going through divorce. I wish that I would have had a fun environment away from the classroom to talk to someone about how I was feeling. As I grew up, I developed depression and anxiety. In high school, the guidance counselors did not seem to know how to advise me to handle my problems. It even came down to a guidance counselor suggesting that I was “faking it” because when she saw me in the hallways, I was happy. This misconception about mental illness only caused me to become more entrapped in my depression, and I never want another student to feel as if they are belittled or an attention seeker. In my career as a school counselor, I would make sure that students feel as though their feelings are validated. I would never accuse a child of faking their …show more content…

The children I will be working with may have behavioral or family problems. As I am working with them, I have to be involved enough in their life to understand the details surrounding their issues, without the child developing a form of attachment. It is extremely easy for someone who feels alone to have a strong relationship with a person who they feel they can trust and talk to. Since there is a large chance that I will be this trusted adult, I have to ensure that there are legal and ethical rules to keep in place. As their counselor, I cannot allow them to have my personal cell phone or e-mail. The only way that this student can contact me will be over professional communication devices. Although I want to help this student as much as I can, these boundaries are necessary for the student’s development within themselves.
