I believe that leadership is something that should be earned. Whoever is the most qualified and passionate should be the person who leads, not the most popular. I believe that having integrity and expecting it at all times from your team is the best way to operate. I believe that leaders cannot always be the “good guys” in every situation. I believe that it is important to find people who will help you most achieve your goal, but ones who are loyal, passionate, and want to grow personally. Mutual respect in any situation will allow for people to speak their minds, even if it is difficult. In high school mock trial, as a team captain my team placed in the top ten out of 180 teams four years in a row. I coached my little brother’s team about mock trial, and they placed first in middle school, and fourth in high school last year. My section in band was the only section that was completely memorized for the first marching band show of the year under my leadership. My sorority makes it more difficult for me to see my contributions. I grew up knowing about how businesses are run, and how people are supposed to be discreet about certain things. However, when you are in an organization where people feel like not being fully transparent equals corruption, it’s hard to be a leader. Leaders have to shield certain information because if everyone heard, they would be discouraged. I contribute because I live my sorority’s values. I care so deeply about my sisters and my organization, that I would do anything to make sure that we are the best we can be. I helped to implement a new point system that still uses fines, so members attend mandatory functions, and rewards members for going to the events we work hard to create. I talk about my sorority in a positive way so people recognize the great work we do for our philanthropies. As I do this, I feel like I am earning the respect of my peers and doing the best job I can. I hope that I can help make my sorority more noticeable, and I want to become President more than anything right now because I believe that I follow our values more than anybody
Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.
A leader needs to “believe” in oneself and have the confidence that whatever you say will excite and what you do can motivate others. You must be optimistic about what you do, do have some relevance for being in existence. Believe it or not, “leadership begins with you”.
The qualities that make a good leader are as varied as the people that fill leadership roles. Some leaders aren’t overly dynamic but somehow get the best out of people while others appear to be too carefree to take seriously. What is it then that makes leaders who they are? A personal philosophy of leadership is that distinguishing trait that every leader possesses. What those leadership characteristics and behaviors are will be explored in the following text, along with what I believe is the best route for me to follow as I work on developing my own personal philosophy of leadership.
Introduction Through identification and ongoing assessment of her leadership style and ability, this leader is able to develop and understand her own strengths and limitations in order to grow and develop into a more effective leader. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of servant leadership, contingency, and path-goal styles of leadership to gain an understanding of current leadership models, identify this author’s style of leadership, and explore why leadership is important to organizations, society, and this author. A Personal Model of Leadership Servant leadership was a term that was first used by Keifner Greenleaf (1970) in his first essay, The Servant as Leader (as cited by Crippen, C., 2005). Greenleaf based his essay on his belief that a servant leader is a servant first, and explained that it would begin with the natural urge to serve and then the leader would make a conscious choice to become a leader, in doing so he makes the choice to ensure that others needs are met first (2005 ). As a servant leader develops he should always keep aware of those who he serves and strive to ensure that they are becoming healthier, wiser, freer, have an increase in autonomy, and become more like servants themselves (2005).
When people think of leadership so many things rush through their heads. For example am I a leader, am I apart of a group that has a leader, and what does being a leader mean? A common definition of being a leader is a person who leads or guides a group of people. So now knowing the definition of a leader who pops into your head; Phil Jackson, Mike Krzyzewski, Martin Luther King Jr.? All of these people are great leaders, but the real question is why are they so great? One very important thing that all these men have in common is they have a philosophy of leadership. This philosophy is going to help guide these men during turbulent times, or when they need guidance themselves. Nobody is perfect and everyone needs direction no matter how wise or gifted you are. I am no different, which is why writing this philosophy of leadership is going to be a fruitful experience for years to come.
I grew up in Evanston, Illinois where there are opportunities for every type of child. My parents put me through various sports teams, and by the time I was in high school I had developed a sense of what it takes for a team to be one successful unit. I had the pleasure of being a captain for my football team, wrestling team, and lacrosse team, but I was not the most talented out of all my teammates. I explored different interest through my education and extracurricular activities. I found myself volunteering for the theater construction crew and eventually head of set design for a YMCA sponsored play. With the help of the college and career center I was allowed on a field trip to the Evanston Civic Center. I thought it was really interesting to see all of the different types of employees of the city, but I initially did not see any relation to my future life. The various concepts of management have been very helpful, and they have had an impact on my personal management philosophy. Planning is an action that involves thinking about a project and organizing them in a manner that is likely to lead to the desired goal (Dumas, 2013). I like the fact that the teacher pointed out that leadership can be found everywhere. There are many different things I think of when I think of what leadership means to me. My idea of leadership is to be able to inspire others, get them excited to do something, motivate them and set an example to others. I also think that showing respect to others is a key part of leadership. You don’t just need leadership qualities, but you need to be a successful leader. To me being a successful leader is being able to have people follow you and not disrespect you. If you are a great leader your followers start to respect you more. Some people were born to be great leaders and some were born to be great learners. I ask myself this question, “How was I created?” Was I born a leader or was I molded to lead. As I explain my philosophy on how I want to lead, I will first dive into my past to recognize and pin point my creator. October 27th 2004 I raise my right hand in order to serve and protect the United State against all enemies, foreign and domestic. At this moment in my young personal leadership journey, I get my first glimpse of a leadership style, “shut up and listen.”
It is my passion that the meaning of life does not dwell in the duration of time that one can live or the material abundance that one can obtain, but in the prosperity and the admirableness of life itself. Over time many things in my life have changed. But one thing remains clear, that is, I will always insist on doing what I want and like to do and hope that my accomplishments can be helpful to the life of others. Therefore, I perceive this as the only way whereby I can appraise the value of my life.
I believe true leadership is a quality many aspire to have, and only a few truly obtain, because in order to become a leader you must first learn to follow.
