Personal Statement: A Career As A Social Worker

I am interested in becoming a social worker because I would like to help those in need and ensure that their needs are being met. I want a career in social work simply because I really admire their hard work, dedication, and strength. I want to have a career that I enjoy and I strongly believe that having a career in social work will be rewarding. I strongly value human interaction and this is a major concept as a social worker. A social worker must engage with the families or individuals that are they assisting in order to be an effective social worker. I am interested in creating a relationship with the people that I am helping as well as their communities. As a social worker it is expected that you will engage with diverse communities. It

will be interesting to witness how different families function which will allow me to adopt new perspectives in my everyday life as well as in my career. Some barriers that I believe one might face as a social worker would be language barrier. There might be instances where lack of communication might be prevalent which could lead to misunderstandings. However, with experience and proper training one will learn how to resolve those issues. Another barrier one might face as a social worker, is the involvement one participants in an individual’s life including their families. Many might not agree with the work ethics a social worker values and view their work to be trespassing and misleading. Working within a diverse community it is important to keep in mind who you are assisting and adjust your skills to accommodate their specific needs.
