Through my work in environmental compliance with petroleum retailers, I developed a strong interest in pursuing innovative solutions to environmental problems. My professional experience in environmental and health hazard mitigation at Environmental Compliance Services, Inc. was rewarding; however, I concluded that a career in the business-environment nexus aligned more closely to my future goals. With my skill set and interests, I aim to improve the processes and cultures of corporations and governments. In this career path, I have the best opportunity to positively influence the effective utility and conservation of scarce resources. An MBA at the Fuqua School of Business will equip me with the tools necessary to understand the needs of industry, commerce, and advancement—along with the desire to conserve the environment in a just way. I will gain expertise in business strategy, sustainability, and financial tools that, when coupled with my Nicholas School degree, will allow me to analyze private sector opportunities in the energy landscape. The Fuqua School of Business offers a unique curriculum and set of learning experiences that matches my career goals and supports my academic growth. I am currently in my first year at the Nicholas School of the Environment, specializing in Energy and the Environment. This first step, in tandem with an MBA at Fuqua, will prepare me to become a positive and influential leader in the energy industry. Fuqua’s new Energy Finance concentration and overarching emphasis on teamwork and leadership match my short- and long-term ambitions. In particular, I am attracted to Fuqua due to the rigor and usefulness of courses such as Decision Models and Corporate Finance. The academic training at Fuqu... ... middle of paper ... ...s is an important skill that I will enhance during my Fuqua MBA experience and use to set myself apart as a professional. Finally, I have been fortunate to have already had the opportunity to spend a semester at the Nicholas School and take advantage of the many experiences that Fuqua offers for students across graduate programs. Among various energy seminars and professional development events, I have attended two energy industry conferences. These experiences have increased my desire to fully delve into all of the opportunities that a Fuqua education in energy finance will provide. My interactions with Fuqua faculty, such as finance professor John Buley, have also confirmed my ambitions to pursue a Fuqua MBA now to further my career goals. I am progressively more excited for the opportunity to continue my education at Duke with the MEM/MBA dual degree program.
While other children watched their favorite cartoon or played their favorite video game, reading business articles and watching the fluctuations seen in the stock market enthralled me. Renowned leaders in the business world have always been of interest to me, specifically Warren Buffet. My favorite quote by Buffet is “It’s better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than you and you’ll drift in that direction.” By attending CMU, I would personify this quote. Growing up, my parents have instilled into me, many essential values, such as working hard and “being the best me I could be.” I have always expected a lot from myself, but high expectations from my parents and close friends, have increased my work ethic and lifted my goals and aspirations even higher. For that reason, I hope to challenge myself through the prestigious Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Science’s economics curriculum. The undergraduate economics program would prepare me for a vast array of careers. Jobs in policy, law, and business are all possible, or if one desires to go to some sort of post graduate school, that is also possible. By having such a top-notch education, I would surely be closer to achieving my goal of receiving my MBA from Tepper. In making all this possible, a wide range of classes must be made available. Classes that are available in just about any economics curriculum, like Intermediate Economics, are also available here, but classes like Behavioral Economics and Global Electronic Markets are what makes CMU unique. Another attractive aspect of CMU is the jointly administered economics degree by Dietrich and Tepper. I feel this will make for a solid foundation in the field of econo...
There are a lot of reasons why I chose to pursue pharmacy as my career and they all point to the most important reason: pharmacy is a great fit for my life and is something I have become increasingly passionate about. It started when I was researching careers with my parents and my dad suggested pharmacy and, simply put, it sparked my interest because at the time it was one of the few things I thought I would not hate doing. A healthcare career has always been where I put myself in the future, mainly because most of my family members are in the healthcare field. However, I have never been one that could directly help the wounded or deal with anything gory, but am very intrigued by the growing science of pharmacy. As I continue exploring pharmacy, the more I enjoy learning about it and feel like I could excel in this career.
Duke Energy, being led by Good, has been leading the charge in cutting back from burning coal in order to operate. Duke is doing this by focusing on investing in renewable energy. This practice is accomplished by having multiple wind and solar farms throughout eighteen states(Sweet). By focusing on these farms and renewable energy, Duke has been able to cut down on coal usage to only contribute one-third of their power(Sweet). This is showing a conscious effort by Good and Duke to make ethical decisions for its customers and ultimately the environment

An interest in business and agricultural studies has always taken some form throughout my life, whether it was running a farm in seventh grade, building a mentoring program during freshmen year or acting as the treasurer for National Honors Society. At first I was learning to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables and then determining how to sell them in order to achieve a net profit. Later I studied how to successfully construct a budget for a new mentoring class at our school and this year I have studied the complex theories of economics and management taking place on a worldwide scale. These experiences have built my passion for Applied Economics and Management at Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Sciences. This specific college has the classes and professors that demonstrate the same interests I am looking for in college. Although I have already gained a great amount of business knowledge, my studies have also taught me about the endless approaches and lenses in which you can view a business problem. Whether it be to delve into the mind of the consumer and understand what mak...

While studying at the University of Washington, Smith decided to take time off to work as an engineer for Boeing Enterprises. During his tenure, he recalls rows and rows of engineers sitting at their desks, reminding him of the assembly line. Seeing this unattractive future, he decided to switch to a Business orientation and eventually enrolled into Harvard Business School in pursuant of an M.B.A. (Smith).
The choices we make early in life have an enormous impact on our future. I have always known that I wanted to directly impact people’s lives. My personal experiences have had a large impact on my motivation to accomplish all my dreams. In the future, I would love to influence another generation of students to soar for their dreams.
Since the beginning of my academic endeavors, I have long cherished a dream to be a member of the social science research community, which gives our society progressive insights into human ecology. I began my undergraduate studies at Ramapo College of New Jersey with a passion for ecological justice and with the intention of majoring in environmental studies. Ramapo College’s progressive liberal arts foundation provided me with ample room to explore the multifarious array of social science courses. As I took more social science courses, however, my understanding of human social groups underwent a metamorphosis. As a result, I decided to pursue a degree in Social Science, with minors in the two fields I felt most passionately interested in, Women’s Studies and African American Studies.
For some students a report card is an accurate reflection of their abilities, aspirations, and future work habits. Many friends of mine have flawless, or near flawless, report cards. Straight A's and weighted GPA's well over 4.0 grace their every progress report, and I am certain they will continue this streak of academic excellence well into the future. For others, C's, D's and fail's are a normal occurrence, and much like the straight A students, I have no doubt that they will continue down this path. But for some students, like myself, a report card is not an accurate picture of academic ability. I am not afraid to admit - to friends, family, or schools I intend to apply to - that my grades aren't good. I haven't had a GPA anywhere near 4.0 in at least 3 years, and at times this fact makes me proud. While I usually earn B's or C's in my classes, there are a few bright spots on my academic record. I am in the 98th percentile of the SAT test, and in the 99th on the ACT. I achieved a 5 on the AP Computer Science test, and despite a C in my AP Physics class, I managed a 4 on the final exam. On top of that, in my two years on El Camino Real High School's Academic Decathlon team I have been the highest scoring C Student in all of the Los Angeles Unified School District twice in a row, placed third in the state of California, and look forward to a promising season this year.
Jim Collins expressed ideas people might overlook in business and in their careers as well. He really opened up my eyes on how to approach the rest of my education and taking this to transition into full-time employment. Many lessons can be taken from this book, but it’s important to understand, while good might be good, it’s not great. Don’t just rely on good, there are always more you can do to be great, produce great results and be a part of a great company. So as mentioned before are you a hedgehog or fox? Do you want to be great or are you satisfied with good? Look in your three circles, avoid the doom loop and keep your flywheel spinning, after all of that you can become the energy industry’s next great leader.
