Personal Sanctuary
If I could pick one place to spend the rest of my life in confidentiality, I would undoubtedly choose my bedroom. Surrounded daily by noise, people, and things, everyone should have a place of their own that they feel comfortable in. For many, that is their kitchen, their bathroom, or maybe even a backyard setting, for me, it is the place where I sleep- my bedroom. After a long day at school, work, or out and about, my bedroom is the only place I can feel relieved and relaxed. With two walls being a dark maroon and the other two being off white, the luminescence that the off white walls bring from the windows gives off a feeling of tranquility. According to a research conducted by the University of British Columbia, white gives off a “calm” essence, while red supposedly excites neurons in the brain. My long, horizontal, chestnut dresser lines my king sized bed. No other scenario can come up to par with the action of throwing myself onto my bed into my abundant supply of pillows. The bedspread is a subtle gold, with intricate stitching making its way throughout the entire comforter. In a similar survey, the Huffington Post claims that the color yellow (gold) can convey a happy, yet sickening mood. It is safe to say my sanctuary of a bedroom carries many emotions with it.

My bedroom could be considered as “cozy” to many as almost never is there a pumpkin spice candle being burned. The peaceful emotions it ignites can really soothe yourself from a bad, stressful day. Picture this- submerging yourself in a pool of blankets and pillows, with candles lit to your left and right, while watching your favorite show on Netflix. I would have to admit that my room is much more appreciated in the winter and fall than in the summer. The “dark” and “warm” vibe it gives off can sometimes be perceived as depressing in the happy, sunny days of
In the excerpt reading from Locking Up Our Own, the author, James Forman Jr., spoke about the issue our society has faced recently with mass incarceration of African-American males. He also talks about his own past experience with the situation through being a public defender. He had previously worked under Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and decided that he wanted to defend low-income individuals who were charged with crimes in Washington, D.C. Forman detailed a few specific cases he had working with young, African-American males and retold his reactions to some of the convictions.
In Homeward Bound, Elaine Tyler May portrays the connection between foreign and political policy and the dynamics of American families during the post war and Cold War eras through the idea of containment. She argues that political containment bred domestic containment by tying together the widespread anticommunist views of the years following World War II with the ideal of American suburban domesticity. According to May, "domestic containment" was a side effect of the fears and aspirations that arose after the war had ended - within the home, "potentially dangerous social forces of the new age might be tamed, where they could contribute
The 1930s was a tough time for all of the mentally ill people. They were not treated the way that they do now. The mentally ill were called names like satans child, or they were not expected or very frowned upon in many religions. So because of all of the people who were mentally ill they started to create asylums. With these asylums they could hold almost all of the mentally ill people during that time. All of the asylums were overcrowded and sometimes there would be around 1 million patients. WIth all of the people in these asylums the staff and doctors became very understaffed so the patients living within the asylums were not treated how they should have been. Then doctors had found ways that they thought could cure these mentally ill people, whether it would be cruel to them or not. The treatments ran from major brain surgery to taking baths for multiple days.
Solitary confinement has the ability to shatter even the healthiest mind when subjected to indefinite lockdown, yet the mentally ill, who are disproportionately represented in the overall prison population, make up the majority of inmates who are held in that indefinite lockdown. Within your average supermax prison in which all inmates are subjected to an elevated form of solitary confinement, inmates face a 23-hour lockdown, little to no form of mental or physical stimulation that is topped off with no human interaction beyond the occasional guard to inmate contact. It is no wonder ‘torture’ is often used synonymously to describe solitary confinement. For years, cases arguing against solitary confinement have contested against its inhumane
“The thing about a bed, is that we keep them in our bedroom, which is like our intimate space, our private space, that we can
My room is the only place where I am most comfortable due to the way how I personally decorated it. My room fits my personality and nothing in my room distracts nor annoys me. Everything fits my preference: the size of my bed, its setting, its organization, and the low quantity of baubles scattered around the room. My room can either be clamorous or silent.
Solitary confinement is a penal tactic used on inmates who pose a threat to themselves or other inmates. Solitary confinement is type of segregated prison in which prisoners are held in their cell for 22-24 hours every day. If they are allowed to leave their cell, they will silently walk shackled and in between two guards. They can only leave for showers or exercise. Their exercise and shower are always done alone and inside. They can exercise in fenced in yards surrounded by concrete. Solitary confinement is either used as a punishment for prison behaviors, a protection method for targeted inmates, or a place to keep prisoners who are a threat to the general prison population. Many prisoners are put in Administrative Segregation for their protection. Many prisoners in this type of segregation are teenagers, homosexuals, and mentally ill prisoners. Many mentally ill prisoners are sent to solitary confinement because there are not rehabilitation services available, and prison officials have run out of options (Shalev, 2008, p [1-2]). Solitary confinement is a convenient method for prison systems, but the detrimental effects on inmates make it an unsuitable option for inmate control.

Upon moving in to her home she is captivated, enthralled with the luscious garden, stunning greenhouse and well crafted colonial estate. This was a place she fantasized about, qualifying it as a home in which she seemed comfortable and free. These thoughts don’t last for long, however, when she is prescribed bed rest. She begins to think that the wallpaper, or someone in the wallpaper is watching her making her feel crazy. She finally abandons her positivity towards what now can be considered her husband’s home, and only labels negative features of the home. For example, the narrator rants about the wallpaper being, “the strangest yellow…wallpaper! It makes me think of… foul, bad yellow things” (Gilman). One can only imagine the mental torture that the narrator is experiencing, staring at the lifeless, repulsive yellow hue of ripping

In prison, the types of securities vary drastically. Minimum security, the lowest level of security, houses the non-violent criminals. Based on my experience, Hong Kong is dry, humid, and warm in every seasons. The weather outside of my room always made me uncomfortable. In a country that is always humid and warm, I had to wear white T-shirts and Hawaiian slippers, and I had to turned on the air-conditioner to medium-low in my bedroom. However, it was very dry when I turned on the air-conditioner, so I placed a huge bottle of Johnson’s baby lotion on my desk, next to my computer. It was important as it protected my skin from the dryness. After I put the lotion on my body, my room became the best place for me to live because I was more comfortable. I felt so alive in my room and tried to disconnect from the pressures of daily life.
