Throughout this semester here at CSU I have learned a lot of different material, but I think I this class have taught me the most valuable information. As an English major it is very important that I do my best at writing and thanks to my Intro to Writing Studies class I feel even more confident as a writer. The Trimble book was my most valuable source this semester. Not only was this book helpful for this course, but I used it for my other courses as well and I also plan on using it in the near future. This semester in this course has not only taught me new ideas, but has refreshed my memory on material that I have covered once before and have forgotten as the years went by. I found the Trimble book so amazing; although it was very small …show more content…
I agree with Trimble here, not everyone would agree would your thesis as a writer, you should prove yourself right and have supporting details that will prove the point you are trying to make. It is always important that you have vital information to support your thesis, if not your information is insufficient. Although I found the Trimble book very helpful in this course I was able to use other sources to aide me as well. I often found myself visiting the Purdue OWL website often to refresh my memory on a lot of things that I needed to get more information about. This website was also very helpful and it is something that I plan on using in my future. When focusing on thesis statements the authors of this site say, “An argumentative or persuasive piece of writing must begin with a debatable thesis or claim. In other words, the thesis must be something that people could reasonably have differing opinions on. If your thesis is something that is generally agreed upon or accepted as fact then there is no reason to try to persuade people.” (Weida and Stolley). This is very similar to Trimble argument about thesis statements, and I agree that your thesis should persuade your readers and give them something to think
As a student, I have learned many different skills that I will take with me throughout my journey from this course. We have traversed many different types of writing styles, which any college student, or any person for that
I am always a little nervous and hesitant when I begin writing an essay. Ever since I was little I was an honor roll student, passed all my tests, was placed in honors and AP classes, and eventually graduated a year early from high school. I used to be so confident when I would begin writing a paper, I could finish it within a couple minutes. During junior year of high school, I began taking duel credit classes. I was passing all the classes so far until I reached English 111. It was an 8-week course and I started to get overwhelmed. All throughout the course I was having a little bit of trouble on the essays. I would still receive a passing grade, but it wasn’t an A. I began becoming a little discouraged and didn’t understand what was going
Up until this year, before taking the class intermediate composition, I thought I was a terrible writer. I was right. Writing isn’t something that I enjoy doing, nor am I good at. Writing is difficult for me because I’m not very good at explaining things in a professional manner, that can be easily well written. While writing you are expected to make little to no mistakes, which is not something I’m great at. I am so much better at explaining things with verbal words rather than written words. I had not taken any extra writing classes before this year rather than the mandatory ones. Like I had stated before, I hate writing, with a passion. I dread writing anything, especially an essay for school, like this one. I’m
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
helps us to behave within society rules. With that being said I believe it encourages people to have a sense of moral beliefs along with guidance. Which leads me to have faith that people are capable of separating there right from wrongs. Making themselves aware and in control of their own futures. For instants when I am faced with a difficult situation I know that it is up to me to make the choice not only to benefit myself, but to be concerned of those around me as well. It also ties in with the way we act, this is known as behaviorism the claim on minds and/or mental events in which they can be expressed in terms of behaviors (“Ontology”) studied by
I went into my educational experience with a wealth of background knowledge about a wide range of topics related to academics, relationships, athletics, and religion. I grew up in a small South Carolina town on a block where there were 48 children who played between the backyards and the park across the street. During the summer, we did not come inside until the street lights came on, and we played kickball, basketball, and baseball regularly. We also spent hours exploring a creek a few blocks away, catching tadpoles or frogs and, if we were really lucky, even snakes. Many of the mothers did not work outside the home and included us as they cooked meals or baked. I was in the first class in our school system to go through completely integrated schools from kindergarten through graduation and witnessed the joy and difficulties associated with changing attitudes concerning “separate but equal.” Most of the families on our block were Lebanese Catholic, and even though we were not, we learned about religion from them as we walked with to and from the church almost weekly for their religious education classes. Both sets of grandparents lived on the block next to us. We often ate dinners there where we were taught formal table manners, table settings, and basic etiquette. My mother worked part time at an historic
A couple of weeks ago, the class was assigned a personal narrative essay and the prompt was to tell an interesting story of a specific experience that changed how you acted, thought, or felt. To be honest, I was awfully excited to write this essay because talking about myself is the easiest thing to write about sometimes. However, deciding what experience to talk about was challenging because I have already experienced so much in my seventeen years of being alive from dislocating my hip when I was three, to seeing my grandfather die in front of my eyes, from almost tripping off of the trail on the Grand Canyon, to meeting band members at an airport. Writing this essay brought me many challenges, I did not know what topic to
Throughout the years certain paradigms have become a big part of my life. Some paradigms are overwhelmingly difficult to change whiles other are long forgotten and overcome. I try new thinking patterns as often as I can, but sometimes it takes a while for me to get rid of my old ways and get used to my new ways. The following paradigms are the hardest to change.
Coming from English 1010 I thought I was done learning and growing as a writer, but I was able to further develop my English skills in new ways by exploring my writing ecology. I came into this class having an understanding of how to format different essays, what Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are, and felt that I had a strong understanding of discourse communities. This semester I was able to further expand and really focus on my community discourses I am a part of. I was also able to demonstrate that I use writing and reading in my discourse community I am in.
Over the course of this semester I have learned a lot from my English 1302 class. Through the instruction of Professor Keck as well as the Pearson textbook and the writing handbook I have been instilled with devices that I can carry with me for as long as I am writing. I have not only learned how to better my writing but also how to write arguments that are not only strong but effective.
Looking back on this class I find my writings have improved since the first essay I composed. I was a nonexistent writer with no formal writings. I had a hard time forming ideas and organizing my work. With this class I have become a more confidant strong writer.
Focusing the topic engages the reader and makes for a more interesting read. The thesis statement must be supported with facts of their opinion. Everyone has an opinion, when you can back it up with proof then your reader can determine the facts. “Opinions require proof” (Connelly, 2013, p. 56).
This weeks assigned reading gave me insight to more strategies, as well as recalling an experience. Last week, I talked about how I needed to moreso improve my level of writing to meet the standards of college level. After this week, I think I am ready to contend for a college level paper using all my resources from the textbook given.
1. Throughout the unit of snorkelling, I developed, extended and applied my SACE Personal and Social Capabilities by, developing a sense of personal identity and self-awareness. This was achieved by, utilising and expanding my knowledge and achieving an Australian Underwater Federation (AUF) Snorkelling Certificate.
