As a health care professional, you will encounter many blood-born pathogens, and transmittable diseases. One of your first defenses against those is your personal protective equipment, also known as PPE. This equipment includes protective clothing, eyewear, face masks, and gloves. They are made of fluid resistant material to protect against things like splash, splatter, aerosol, and bodily fluids. Over the course of this paper I will discuss the proper steps to donning and doffing personal protective equipment that best prevents cross contamination. The protective clothing is worn over your scrubs and will either tie in the back or button up in the front. Once on it should cover your wrist as well as a good portion of your neck. The next step is putting on your protective mask, this should fit securely over the nose and mouth. The mask protects you from inhaling infectious organisms or accidental splashes. There are two different types a flat mask, and dome-shaped mask; both have straps to be secured behind the ears or tied behind the head. When using a flat mask, the metal strip should be pinched around the bridge of the nose and the bottom pulled down below the chin. After placing the mask, you are ready to put on your protective eyewear. When choosing eyewear, you want to make sure it has both front and side shields; this is important because it protects your eyes against any debris or splattered chemicals that could lead to vision impairment.
