Personal Philosophy of Nursing Why does one choose a career in nursing? There are usually several reason one may choose to become a nurse; however, nursing is one of those professions that often chooses the person rather than the other way around. Nursing is a calling, a mission, and a life’s work. It is a culmination of compassion, service, knowledge, teamwork, integrity, and perseverance. While it is true that one may receive the title “Registered Nurse” by going to school and passing an exam, this author believes nursing is something that lives inside a person; it is an inherent desire to heal, protect, advocate, and serve. In order to serve patients most effectively, one must look introspectively and determine what one believes about nursing. Additionally, one must compare and contrast one’s beliefs with the organization in which one works. This evaluation embraces all four components of the metaparadigm of nursing – person, health, environment, and nursing. Furthermore, the philosophy evaluates one’s beliefs on the pursuit of higher knowledge. Finally, once a personal philosophy is established, it guides a nurse’s daily actions and aid in providing exceptional, expertly delivered nursing care. The following …show more content…
This is because nurses practice with accountability and responsibility. Nurses are trustworthy and have integrity. Accountability and responsibility are of the utmost importance in nursing practice and can often mean the difference between life and death of a patient. Furthermore, nurses need to be accountable not only to patients, but also to each other and to themselves. We cannot be afraid to speak up for what is right and voice concerns about a situation that makes us uncomfortable. Nurses should trust their instincts – if it does not feel right, it probably is not right. It is better to say something and be wrong than to stay silent and allow a patient or coworker to be
I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. At the end of a long shift, it is a rewarding profession, knowing that I am saving people’s lives, making them comfortable when they are near of dying, advocate and teaching them. As nurses, we care for patients through illness, injury, aging, health. We also promote health, prevent diseases and teaching the community; that’s what I love about nursing. I believe that this is the right profession for me because I have all the qualities that a nurse should possess when
According to Chitty & Black (2014) the philosophy of nursing is defined as beliefs and values that are the bases for how we think and act in our nursing careers. Similar to a nursing philosophy, a personal philosophy includes a person’s specific beliefs and values. The purpose of this paper is to start evolving my own personal nursing philosophy that contains my own beliefs and values that I will take with me throughout my career as a registered nurse.
When it comes to narrowing down and discovering personal philosophies on nursing, one can look to the metaparadigm of nursing to assist in their search. The metaparadigm of nursing is a collection of four concepts that
Ever since I was a little girl, my motivation to pursue a career in the medical field was evident. While other children my age watched Cartoon Network, I found more value in shows like ‘Trauma: Life in the ER’ and ‘A Baby Story.’ It wasn’t until high school that I decided I would become a nurse, specifically. I cannot say that I had a revelation or a particular experience that swayed my decision. However, ever since I began pursuing the career of nursing, I discover each and every subsequent day that it is what I was put on this earth to do.
My personal nursing philosophy and fundamental beliefs of nursing using the four meta-paradigms concepts: nature of human beings, health, environment, and nursing. First, I believe that the profession of nursing is all about the nature of human beings as people. Care involves the patient as a whole, not just as a disease process. Second, I believe that health is on the same continuum as illness. Health is more about quality of life. Third, it is also necessary to look beyond the patient to the environment in which he/she lives in. This is important because people come from different backgrounds and have their own story, we cannot separate patients from their environment because they are interrelated. Last, I think that nursing involves being with the individual patient and having an active roll with them. This process of being engaged in meaningful relationships requires we as nurses be actively
This paper is a first attempt at forming and articulating my own philosophy of nursing.
This paper explores the personal philosophy I have as a nursing student and what I intend to convey throughout my nursing career. A philosophy is “an analysis of the grounds and concepts expressing fundamental beliefs (Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, n.d.). Before entering into any profession it is important to evaluate your personal philosophy about the profession, as it pertains to values and principles in which believe in to guide your practice. The field of nursing is more than treating a physiological ailment, but it involves providing quality care for the individualized needs of each patient, hence being client centered. My philosophy of nursing integrates the importance of knowledge base practice of medicine, combined with addressing holistic needs of the patient and family, including the physical, psychological, cognitive, emotional, spiritual and social care (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, 2010). Additionally, a vital aspect of nursing is effective interpersonal relationships with other healthcare professionals to promote quality patient care. Moreover, my philosophy includes the importance the client-nurse relationship to aid in health promotion to prevent illness and increase the level of health of clients.
"Philosophy is an attitude towards life that evolves from each nurses’ beliefs" (Parker, 2001). It is the philosophy that underlies our practice what brings to life our desire to be nurses. Philosophy is essential because it is the natural extension of our interest in knowing the truth (Parker, 2001). A metaparadigm is the widest perspective of the discipline and a way to describe the concepts that concern the profession of nursing (McEwen & Wills, 2014). In this paper, my philosophy of nursing will be discussed through reflection on the four nursing metaparadigm concepts to determine if anything should be added or taken out.
The greatest aspect about nursing is that it is never going to be just a job and is even more than a merely profession. Instead, it is a belief system or way of life and not a discipline that can simply be practiced then abandoned to the dictates of a time clock. To simply say that “I love people” or want to “help people get better” does not demonstrate the drive behind this feeling. Articulating my philosophy is not an easy task, to better explain my philosophy of nursing, I am going to use some values that I have learned. These tools truly explain how I feel and what has motivated me to pursue nursing as a career.
There is nothing comparable with the happiness of knowing my purpose in life. Nursing is a career where you can never stop evolving. Being a nurse gives me a sense of personal fulfillment that brings challenging experiences every day. It is a profession that demands zeal and the devotion to play an important role in health care.
I chose nursing as a career because I found the work challenging, exciting and rewarding. I feel my skills and attributes are well suited for nursing. My ability to sta...
It is believed that nursing students choose the nursing profession because they have a family member or a person who is close to them who is in the healthcare profession, motivating from work-related reasonings and they have “an altruistic desire to help others” (Angus. Jan E. Hall, Linda. Peter, Elizabeth. Price, Sherri Lynn). Only one of these reasons are similar to my personal reasonings as to why I chose to become a nurse.
Everyone has their own personal philosophy of nursing, rather they know it off hand or not. We all have our own beliefs of what nursing is, our own personal goals, and values that are important to our practice of nursing. Some individuals are more aware of the beliefs and values that influence their role and actions in the nursing field, compared to others who have never thought about it before. When trying to develop your own philosophy of nursing, it may be helpful to think about, your own personal definition of what nursing is, the characteristics you believe a nurse should act upon, the role and purpose of a nurse, nursing as an art and science, and the goals and values that are important to the practice of nursing.
Nursing is a promising career that offers many rewards to caring individuals. It is more than just a job that one attends day to day. Nursing is a career that kind people get in to because they are passionate about life and everything is has to offer. They care for people they have never met before in such a way that makes the patient feel comfortable and able to relax. In a way that makes it possible for the patient to recover from whatever they have encountered. If I am going to spend valuable time and money on education, I want to a job that I absolutely love. I want to have the satisfaction of knowing that my job is safe even when times are rough. Interviewing Jennifer H, a Registered Nurse at a local Banner facility really helped me get insight on what the position has to offer. I have encountered many people who are not passionate about their job and just show up for a paycheck; choosing a job in the medical field provides people with the same check, but also offers job security, advancement opportunities and numerous benefits for the employee and their famil...
My reasons for selecting a career in nursing stem directly from my desire to help our prospering population and community. This career appeals to me because it embodies what I strive to become, a person of influence, a guide, a respected adult, a mentor, and a person that can be trusted and looked up to with great passion. Another reason for selecting a career in nursing has a lot to do with my current job position at Generations Elder Care. Working with the elderly community at this personal care home has enriched my life in many ways, including one for my passion of learning more about the nursing field. As I shadowed the nurses entering the facility I watched them do their assessments on the residents which has peaked my curiosity. I believe being a nurse presents daily challenges which are unique, interesting, and rewarding and that is another reason why I want to become a nurse. Knowing that I have helped someone in some way possible gives me a feeling of fulfillment and enjoyment that I never understood or had before. And this career offers just that, and that is exactly why I...
