There are many reasons I was accepted into the University of Michigan, but the obstacles were of greatest importance. It took me quite a while to discover I was poor, fourteen years to be exact, and I was just starting to learn how education was the best way out. My sister and I were raised by a single mother who was always working. We had no one to tell us what to do or where to go. The main focus in our eyes was to do well in school, because it was the only place we received appraisal and guidance. Overall my life has been hard, yet these setbacks have helped me in ways unnoticed by the average person. With so many obstacles and a lack of guidance many would assume there would be no success in my life. Yet living a life of poverty
I wasn’t poor but I wasn’t rich either, I was surrounded by an environment in which many people where in need of shelter and food because their families could not afford both. Just like poverty played a major role in my life, so did an ambitious and hardworking environment. Because those people I would see every day on the streets without food or a home, were the ones that had a bigger passion than anyone else, to one day be able to have a stable job and home for their family. This has shaped me to be who I am today, because I greatly appreciate what I have and take advantage of the opportunities I am given because not everyone is lucky enough to have what one
... front of me since the road to success is far away. Facing unknown obstacles is like drowning in water because obstacles are weighted heavily and sometimes I can't lift it. I just have to use my strength and hopefully, I can raise it off me. I learned that sometimes it is better to have a little false hope than to have none. Perseverance doesn’t not come naturally to all people but eventually it will come because they will find it. It helps them find their inner self by going through obstacles so that they can be more of a life challenge. I believe that this can change a person who they are because it is something everyone needs to go through life.
...e is easy. But this is not the reason why you should give up. Keep your hopes alive and you will be surprised of what you can accomplish if you can only set your mind to it. Because after all, you only live once, so why not try to make the most of it. Again, Sherman Alexie shows us in his book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, how the entire Spokane Reservation is facing poverty but Arnold and Mary Spirit fight for a better life. He goes through all the problems the characters face in the book, and how some choose to live the horrible condition for the rest of their lives but some keep their hopes alive and try their best to break the cycle. Therefore, learn to never give up on your dreams and always hope. Hope make the present moment less difficult to bear. No matter how hard life can get, if you only hope that tomorrow will get better, than it will
Prompt: In 500 words or more, describe your collegiate experience thus far. How has this experience and the knowledge you've gained influenced what you plan to study? How have they influenced your decision to apply to St. Edward's?
Many people have lived the rags to riches story. Famous comedian and actor Jim Carrey was a high school dropout. Carrey's father was laid off, and as a last resort Jim Carrey became a janitor. Carrey was not satisfied with the life he was living, so he wiped the dirt off his face and was determined to change his fate. He started acting, and his career took off. After time, Carrey became a famous actor and comedian. People can make the best of any situation. With hard work and the support of your friends and family anything is
While I wish finding my way around the school was my only problem, I was faced with some internal challenges. As the school year started, my friends slowly started to leave to these “big shot” colleges or simply move away to other community colleges. I, too, wanted the complete “college experience” somewhere in Arizona or across the country; yet I felt stuck and unaccomplished. I also felt jealousy which could have been because I did not get to decorate my dorm room. While talking about dedicating hard work to your education, Gina Rodriguez said “Just remember, during those times of fear and doubt, that you are right now discovering your true strength.” And in those times of doubt, I reminded myself why I could not just move and leave everything behind. The root of my challenges and concerns are my family. As I enrolled as a full time student, my family was fighting some financial problems which created marriage troubles for my parents. I could not leave at a time like this. I knew it was not the first time my parents were talking divorce but somehow I knew it was best to stay. I got financial aid from the school which saved me the fuss of asking my parents for money. It really meant so much to not put another worry on their
When I first started to apply to colleges I just told the truth about who I was. I did not try to put on a courageous act. I just wanted them to see that I may be just as qualified as anyone else, but the difference between us is that I want it so badly. I really did not care where I got accepted; I just wanted to go to college and be someone. Just being there would be a chance to prove that I am worth taking a second look at. See, I am not a rich girl who has always gotten what I wanted, and because I want this so badly, I don't want anyone to take it from me. I worked hard to be who I am, and the great part about it is that I have ambition and I am a goal reacher.
In conclusion, I was fortunate enough to understand many important things in life. One of those things is that we do not always begin at the desired start line, but through effort and strong will we can arrive at the desired finish line, where the outcome of our plans and goals reside. In my pursuit of education, I faced many challenges and hardships, but I always viewed them as temporary setbacks not as a finish line. I am certain that an opportunity to study at the UW would help me reach my finish line.
Many students are struggling in college. According to the New York Times Web site, only 33 percent of the college students are graduating in six years. Obviously students still need much help to succeed in order to get where they want to go. Although college can be challenging, I am going to succeed by using advice from experts, by developing strategies and ideas, and by taking advantage of the benefits offered by my college.
How could you say coming to the University of Sioux Falls a sad tragedy? The story line goes like this. You're having a great day and not worrying about anything, instantly you get a call from your parents. There is dead silence when you pick up the phone, ten seconds later they mumble in a soft voice that your grandparents passed away. You simply feel helpless and upset for the reason that it was your fault that they passed away.
Because my family struggled financially, we were evicted from many homes and were dependent on government aid for a large part of my childhood. I saw the opportunities my parents lost because they did not have high school diplomas, let alone a college degree. I knew that obtaining a college diploma would help me move up in status. Because of my experiences in society as someone who was poor, I was motivated to create a better life for
“There’s always been those times when I needed a breather. When I might need a quick break from being the leader, ‘Cause I’m just human, you gotta feel that.”
Attending the University of Rochester was like because dropped into the middle of the wilderness with only a calculator and a laptop for defense. I was the first person, not only in my family, but in my neighborhood to attend college; I had no one to refer to for help. I figured that since I liked to help people and I did well in science classes, I decided to become a doctor. But I think the re...
Here are the University of Maryland, as part of my experience, the staff, and faculty of all forms have been tremendously helpful. Prior to coming to college, I was afraid of the stereotypical professors who are beyond strict and stress students out completely. I consider myself intellectually curious, as I question everything around me, as a result helping me to better understand the world around me. When I arrived here at the start of the fall semester, this stereotype was thrown out the window. From the first day, I was able to connect to each of my professors, and actually stay focused in class rather than the assignments that were on the syllabus as most of them told us to not worry as they will keep us in-line so that our first semester goes smoothly.
Journal Entry #1: Today was my first day at Michigan State University after receiving a scholarship for basketball The program here is amazing, their campus is awesome. I can't wait to play my first game against the Michigan Wolverines. I have finished my first life goal of going to college. Now I have to be drafted into the NBA and have a family. Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.
