I can honestly say when I saw the title of this course, I was nervous. I have never been a strong writer and haven't completed college level anything since 1999. One of the most important things I have learned from this course is to proof-read out loud what you have written. When you do this, you will often catch grammatical and/or wording issues you would haven't caught if you had just typed directly into the text box. My mistake was "My favorite television show at the moments (moment) is Game of Thrones". This would have been caught if I had read this out loud. It was spelled correctly; however, was not used correctly in the sentence. After reading my initial post in this class, I would follow my own advice stated above. By doing this,
I would have caught several grammatical mistakes. Also in my closing paragraph, there was no ending sentence; it was a fragment. I could have written one other sentence to conclude the paragraph and made it an easier read. Written communication is just as important as verbal communication due to the fact that many employers “specifically identify communications skills as a job requirement”; even when not explicitly listed, there is a “strong assumption that the requirement is implicit” (Mascle, 2013, p. 216). Once I read this statement, I was like "duh". When you are reading the requirements for a job, it will have "good communication skills" listed. I have always thought of that as the way I speak; until now. Communication comes in various forms, however, if you cannot speak well or correctly, it will be difficult to communicate in any setting. Another thing that I learned from taking this course is how to build a better writing and reading skills. Acknowledging reading and writing skills will help me to succeed in my other university courses.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. One thing that I learned from this course is to follow directions. In the first assignment, we were told to write a personal story of what shaped you as a whole. At first, I had a difficult time thinking of a topic to write about, but after viewing other students’ essays, I finally understand what the professor was asking for, and I came up with an idea of writing how I got my cats and wanted to become a veterinarian. Writing this type of essay was difficult because I am not good at expressing myself. Therefore, I always did a bad job in describing my feelings, my thoughts, and etc. Since English is my second language, I know I have a lot of mistakes with my writing. Thus, I went to the Writing Center to ask for professional help. The tutors are very nice and willing to give you academic advices. After going to the writing center, the essay turned out to be my favorite essay that I have even written. However, the assignment was not asking to tell the story, the main theme is to write what shaped you as a whole. As a result, I got a poor grade and realized that this college level course was not the same as a high school writing course. On Monday nights I get together with a few friends to exchange ideas about writing and to exchange pieces that we have written. A few Mondays ago one of those friends was having the most fundamental of creative writing problems. "Why should I ever write anything?" she moaned. "Why should any of us? No one wants to hear anything I have to say because I have nothing new to say about any of it." After I, along with the rest of the group, tossed some sympathetic and half-heartedly reassuring words to her I had a thought. "Ultimately, everyone wants to feel like they are not alone. No matter how right or how wrong we think our lives are going or how right or wrong our thoughts are, we want to know that other people are there to support us because they empathize with our experiences." What I was trying to explain is the reasoning behind continuing to write creatively after thousands of years of recorded literature. What I also realized is that, unless the subject deals with some knew political or technological development, people have not really found any new subjects about which to write. Love is still as wonderful and painful as it has always been, death is still as mysterious, deception, betrayal, adventure, none of these things has changed and yet they are among the most commonly written on subjects. Why have we, as a race, not told ourselves that there is no new subject about which we can write and therefore that we should throw in the towel altogether? One reason may well be that humyns, in general, are loathe to admit our shortcomings and are, therefore, ultimately arrogant. But humyn beings are also ultimately lonely. Of course, there are many reasons people read: seeking excitement, research, etc. But why, for example, read a biography of a person you do not know? Because we want to relate to other people. We want to feel good about ourselves as people by reading about the happiness in another's life. We want to feel better about ourselves by reading that someone else has the same problems as we. We tire of our own lives, we get curious, we seek connection, and we want to hear stories about things that others have done that we, perhaps, have not.
Who am I as a reader? I think of myself as an average reader. I first began to read, when in elementary when the English teachers, told us we had to read a book, and from there, I began to read books. I didn’t really like to read books, but we were told to do so. The book which I had to read in elementary school, were not bad for a little child to read. The books could have been better, as of now all the elementary books are good in some certain circumstances.
Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
During my demonstration speech, I was affected by my speech anxiety. Some of the viewable symptoms were the shaking of my hands and also the stuttering of speech. I was able to control myself and relax after I started getting into my information. I did use some of the suggested relaxation techniques to relieve my anxiety. Before I got up to speak I thought confident of myself to help give me courage and confidence.
A wise woman once told me that actions speak louder than words. Despite Mr. Twain being the actual author of these words, my mom said this phrase to me when I was a little girl. I have tried to live by these words every day of my life since then. Whether it be with my family, friends, school or greater community I try to remember that a simple action can have a much bigger impact than words. I enjoy being actively involved in every aspect of my life. With my family, I make an effort to check in with my grandparents and aunts and uncles to make sure that everyone is doing okay. Rather than simply telling them that I love them, I would rather show them that I love them by giving them flowers or helping them with something that might need to be done. On a larger scale, I am also very involved and active within my school community. You can find me all over the school participating in different sports and clubs including basketball, lacrosse, service club, and photography club. I have taken on leadership roles within my school community such as being president of the photography club and leading a senior Kairos retreat.
All I could remember on my journey to literacy was my concern over my brother and sister’s ability to read and write including solving math problems. That did not really motivate not to become literate; I was extremely playful as a child. What I am able to remember is my first day of school, I cried like a baby when my mom dropped me off. I soon began to grow out of my baby stage and school became really interesting. Even though it was not as hard as it is now, the value that pushed me to be literate was how my teacher was able to discipline students if they didn’t give the best to their education.

There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. For myself my own personal nonverbal cue would be silence. Silence made me misinterpret a message at work when I asked my supervisor about my time off a few months in advance and it took her a few days to even respond to my email. I like to plan out my days off and work around my co-worker schedules as well as my kids schedules and plan a few months ahead just so it’s no issues. I just found out my kid’s spring break was the same week my coworker is going on a week vacation. I felt bad for my kids because I can’t never really take time off because I don’t have the hours since I have been taking off so many days for my current health situation. I saw my supervisor and she even came up to me about other things after I sent the email. I started giving her the silence treatment because I felt she was ignoring me. After a day or so she called me to come in her office only to question the days I asked off. She was asking if I really wanted the days off. I really felt bummed because it’s like she wasn’t approving my time because she was asking if I wanted those days off. In my email I said “If I have the time off” I would like those days off. That meant if I had earned the time off and was eligible to take the time off I would do so.
Over the period of time that I was in this course, I thought it would be a very simple and easy to finish class. But as time went on, I found myself to be demanded more of what I think, what I feel, what must be relied on my ability to understand the concepts and conventions of not only the essays, but of what goes on in the writers mind when writing.
