What it Means to Give Back
Community service is often times done to receive a good assessment on a transcript or in a job interview. I’ll admit that at the start of my Senior year, I only wanted to get service hours because it would help me receive the twenty-hour minimum required to stay in the Beta Club. But after spending time with people in my community and giving back, I learned that helping others is a lot of fun and rewarding at the same time. By helping in my community, I got to know people, learned skills in cleaning and building, and ultimately made my hometown a better place.
If people didn’t participate in service, the world wouldn’t run as smoothly as it does. Trash would pile up on the side of the road, the elderly with little
People become involved in community service for different reasons and it is up to the individual to realize if it is worthwhile and why they are helping others. Community service brings a nation together. Every country wants its community to be disciplined and work for change. Community service is the best way to inculcate responsibility into individuals. This is where I come in, as a volunteer, as an activist for a change and assistance. I have been inducted and a member of three unique clubs with a core purpose of community service and assistance to others. I have been apart of CSF, California Scholarship Federation, for three years and counting. Each system it is required for obtain fifteen hours of community service, whether be with an organization or school based activity. California Scholarship Federation is an exclusive community of college bound scholars who share resources, provide peer tutoring, and pursue success through community service and academic achievement. I became inducted into NHS, National Honor Society, my sophomore year. Since then I have been an active member participating in every community service opportunity our club participates in. In addition to the club's community service, we as members are required to obtain a certain amount of community service outside the club in order for our membership to not be revoked. NHS
Maybe it’s the fact that I tend to stay in my room all weekend, which leads to people thinking I’m studying when in reality I am probably binge watching a TV show or maybe it’s my glasses, but most people who don’t know me too well assume that I am smart. Now that is a great thing for me because I don’t have to try as hard to impress them, but I end up finding myself in a bit of a problem. The problem is that everyone thinks I enjoy admiring school textbooks. But the truth is I’m usually admiring my Justin Bieber poster on my bedroom wall. Ever since I was in sixth grade I’ve been a huge fan of Bieber. His music always brought a feeling of calmness and back in the day his “never say never” motto, was what I lived by. I might still be living by that motto because I’ve decided to write this essay
Community service means helping people who are in need and not excepting anything in return. It is very important because it teaches you how to work with different people and it helps you and the person you are helping. There are always places in the community that are in need of volunteers. The organization I chose to volunteer at was BAPS, also known as Bochasan Vasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha.
Community Service is a great opportunity to make a difference in the area you live in. There are so many ways to volunteer. Some people are given chances to do community service when they need to pay off fines for tickets. Most people simply do because they love getting involved. It’s their way of making the community a cleaner, healthier place.
Community service: What a wonderful opportunity for students! A chance for our younger citizens to learn responsibility, experience the satisfaction that comes with helping others and to acquire new skills.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. My father usually doesn’t make it his top priority to go to the doctors, so he waited about four weeks until he really didn’t feel good.
The purpose of having service hours is to do it out of goodwill, like acts of kindness one can give to another. An example of teenagers in particular serving the community out of goodwill is shortly after the 9/11 attacks(Kenny and Gallagher 128). These students took part in distributing goods and other services. At that time, President Bush was glad that students took part in volunteerism. The national
I strongly believe in acts of service and the impact they have on a school and a community. Putting others’ needs before yours is extremely beneficial to both sides. In reaching out to others, I learned that my volunteer work can make a positive impact on someone’s life even in the simplest of ways. Serving has a direct impact on others and well as on the individual that gives of themselves. Furthermore, these acts of service build good character, respect, responsibility, and trustworthiness, which are important in life, as these qualifications help distinguish people from one another. For these reasons, I have gladly served in a variety of areas throughout my educational career.

Participating in community service can help a person become more active and involved in their community, it can also build your work related skills and make you gain experience to network with future employers and companies. Community Service helps an
I felt a rush of excitement after being called to the office to leave, as any high schooler would, but this time seemed different. I felt sick as I collected my things and started my way to the office. Walking in, I saw the secretary standing behind her desk with a distressed look on her face. It became clear that something was horribly wrong. As I approached her, she informed me that something had happened to my grandpa and that I would get picked up shortly to be taken to the hospital.
There are a plethora of benefits that come from doing service. The most common is happiness. The London School of Economics measured the level of happiness in a large group of American adults. They found out that the more people volunteered,
I would never have thought that community service could be such a reward experience. As the oldest child and growing without my mom, I never had the opportunity of having someone that could help me with my homework or help me when I needed something. Since I came to the United States six years ago I was definitely on my own considering my mom didn’t know English to help me. From this moment forward, I can say I am very proud of myself for being the first person in my family to pursue a college degree and for all the things I have accomplished without having someone that could advise when I was doing something wrong. I figured that with community services I could meet new people and take advantage of the experience I could get to discover what
Volunteering: The great experience no one can afford to lose. Opposers say, mandatory community service can have several negative effects on students. “Community service hours are impressive additions to college applications and can provide a student with a great sense of accomplishment; however, the mandatory hours will have many negative consequences” (Cydney Hayes, 2012). Many students are barely even passing the regular school curriculum, and opposers believe that adding the additional load of mandatory service hours will discourage teens from even wanting to graduate. Also mandatory service is usually assigned by a court as punishment to delinquents. “In a small number of cases, community service is required by the court system as restitution for delinquent offenses” (Planty and Bozick, 2006).
The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I had to do it. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it was not what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience.
I used to hate community service. I only did it if it was a requirement for graduation or for a program. Even when I did community service, I still waited until the very last opportunity to do it. When I heard the words community service, all I could picture is cleaning Philadelphia parks or streets that were filled with trash in either the cold or heat. My mind always went to that space because that 's what my first few encounters with community service consisted of. My high school always had us cleaning something; one time we re-landscaped the parking lot of a homeless shelter. Another time, we cleaned up the weeds out of the loading docks of the non-profit food bank Philabundance. One time my mom made me volunteer
