I have found this class to be a challenge, not so much because of the work that needed to be done, but a challenge for my time that I don’t necessarily have. I chose to go back to school because I want to better my life, I want to do something that I am passionate about, and I know it’s the right choice for me. On my first day of class, I had mixed feelings. I know that this class is a requirement for my degree, but I struggled with why it is truly needed to be able to become an engineer mechanic. So, my first day, I felt excited because this class helps me get one step closer to reaching the end. I also felt frustrated, thinking about how I was going to have time for class and the work that went with it. I have to go to work every day, sometimes …show more content…
I have learned the most from writing all the different paragraphs, my writing skills are stronger now and I feel more comfortable with having to write an essay. In the beginning, it was a challenge to find enough to say in my paragraphs without having to repeat myself, but with the skills I have learned in class and in the book, it is easier to write lengthy paragraphs. I learned a lot about the different types of sentence structures: simple, complex, compound and compound-complex. I didn’t know much about the different types of structures and never really put much thought in it before this. I did enjoy learning this concept and learning about the types of clauses and how they make up the different structures. My biggest challenge has been the thesis. This is something that I don’t remember having to do much of in school before. I thought it would be easier than it looked, but I have found it challenging. My skills overall in writing and grammar have improved from taking this class and I am thankful for everything that I have learned. I know I will need all this as I continue down my educational …show more content…
Time has been my enemy and constantly working against me. I came into this class knowing the challenges that I was being faced with and knowing the obstacles I would have to overcome. I feel that I have done my best in balancing my time wisely. I have had to sacrifice less important things in my life to make time for learning. I have long days that are comprised of classes, working, studying, and limited time for my loved ones. I have done my best to make it to every class possible, I know I have missed some, but not by choice. When I do miss class I always ask others about what I missed and I try to catch up. I read and review the material whenever I can find the time, during breaks, when I get home and in the morning before class. A few days I have lots of time and most others, not so much. I have reminders set on my phone to remind me of due dates and quizzes and some peers that also send me reminders. I have found all this very helpful with keeping me on track and helping me
During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. Again, the journey was long, but I will be forever grateful for the things that I, and all of my peers have gained from this
Without doubt besides to know how to write a sentence, it is vital to know the parts of an essay. In this course I had the opportunity to go through different types of essays that helped me to understand how an introduction, thesis, body paragraphs, and conclusion work. Also, how these parts are connected together and make a different function depending of what type of essay I am writing for example, argumentation, narration, process, or any other. Although, I cannot say I became a professional writer after have learned this points, I can say, I became a better one.
Especially with the help of my professor Ms. Piper. I was still having trouble on material on writing, but she helped me by teaching us the writing process, how to revise our drafts, and how to use outlines to help us. She has also taught us ways of breaking down paragraphs in piece of writing to help us understand what we are reading about. I feel with this new approach it opened my eyes on a way to help me excel on my writing, and reading. I am an excellent writer and reader than I was before.
Throughout the entire semester I’ve found difficulty and ease within assignments, readings, blogs, and attendance. At times I over think a certain assignment or reading and underestimate my abilities. With the help of sources such as the handbook, writing center, materials, and your advice as well as my peers I think that I’ve overall achieved a good grade in this class and I hold high hopes for myself in continuing this semester.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. My father usually doesn’t make it his top priority to go to the doctors, so he waited about four weeks until he really didn’t feel good.
There is a point in everyone’s life when they step back and realize “I can’t do this anymore, it’s ruining my life”. Many of my friends have started smoking cigarettes while drinking at a very young age, and continue to use this drug currently and don’t realize the affect it has on their future. While I have been smart enough to avoid smoking, I haven’t been as wise at making decisions when it comes to drinking. The amount of partying I’ve done in college has taken over my life, and has had a huge impact on my grades. Changing my drinking habits and continuing to avoid cigarettes will enable me to be the best I can be for the rest of my college experience.
The work load in both classes were often unbearable. I would get so discouraged that I wanted to drop both classes but I knew how beneficial it would be to earn college credit before graduating high school. This unique opportunity helped to motivate me and kept me focused. The decision not give up on myself allowed me to get the work done and make it through the school year and it felt great to accomplish this goal.
One of my sentence structure flaws coming into this course, in my opinion, is that I use long, complex sentences too often, and forget to vary my sentence length to add variety in my works. This can make my writing seam like every sentence is a mile long, and this can be exhausting to read. This course has allowed me to focus on this while writing, and once again the mutiple drafts allow me to reread my works mutiple times so that I can pick up on this problem. These helpful techniques have allowed me to add a variety of sentence structures that make my works much more enjoyable to
The three categories that support this theme frame the experiences of participants as they attempt to obtain their undergraduate engineering degree. All participants reported that engineering is a difficult major; however, upon further exploration, participants attributed this difficulty to their lack of understanding of some engineering-related concepts. As a result of their lack of understanding, participants reported failing classes and having to retake them in order to obtain their engineering
When I first signed up for this class, I thought that it would be easy since it was a summer course. This was somewhat the case. The class overall was not hard but there was a lot of assignments to keep up with. When I first started my summer courses I had trouble managing my time and completing my assignments in a reasonable time. As the semester came to an end, I believe that I have grown in terms of time management. I still procrastinate sometimes on little things but not as much as I did in the beginning. I am happy that I learned so many great writing tips so early on in my college career so that it can help me further down the road.
In the beginning of the course, I loved reading. I usually read fiction novels that were interesting to me. Books were a source of entertainment as well as relaxation. However, due to my responsibilities I had stopped reading quite as frequently. However, I have never really used peer editing much.
In August, I never imagined my life being the way it is now. My thoughts have changed dramatically; however, it has been in a positive way. For instance, I have learned to keep my head up even during tough situations. When I began college, I thought differently than I do now about class subjects, discussion topics, and the college life. Before, I never knew what to expect.
When you control your time, and work more efficiently, you're able to learn more and increase your experience faster. Time management should also include more than teaching, scholarship, and service. Effective time management also means reserving time for recovery, and time for financial factors, time for family, and time for friends. Having a goal-oriented strategy that makes an effective use of your time will bring you success no matter how you look at it. There isn’t anything we can do about time itself. We can change how we deal with events
