What Hanukkah means to me! When I think of Hanukkah I mostly think of three things Family, the Maccabees and all the games that you get to play. During my Hanukkah dinner with my family we always have so much fun and it is always a great memory. When I hear stories over and over again they usually get boring but not the story about the Maccabees. The story about the Maccabees is probably the best story that I have ever heard. When I first started learning about Hanukkah I was very little, and what gets the attention of little kids better than games. My teacher first taught us about all the games that you play on Hanukkah and I was so amazed that during this holladay we get to play so many amazing games, we get to spin the dreidel and not
only spin the dreidel, we get to spin the dreidel to see who wins more Gelt. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Hanukkah is being with my family. Me and my family always have a big dinner with each other and it’s always so much fun. We always have great food. When my family get’s together everybody always brings a special present and we play secret Maccabee, it’s like secret santa but since we are Jewish we use the Maccabees instead. When I know that Hanukkah is close I always beg my parents to buy a lot of dreidels and gelt so we can start playing early because it is so much fun. They usually say no, but I always end up finding dreidels from last year and use nuts instead of gelt. Me and my family always learn about the Maccabees and how they defeated the evil Greeks. The Maccabees have inspired me and so many people by showing that you don’t need to be bigger to win and that miracles are possible. I really hope you enjoyed reading about what Hanukkah means to me.
Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem after it was reclaimed from the Syrian Greeks. The Temple was recaptured by the leaders of the Jews, who fought the Syrian Greeks; these leaders were known as the Maccabees. When the Maccabees seized the Temple of Jerusalem again they became the Temples priests, they also became they Jewish towns leaders. When the Temple was recaptured it held only a single day supply of olive oil for their candles left, they lit it anyways and to everyone’s surprise the oil kept burning for a whole eight days, which is where the eight days of Hanukkah originated from (Neusner, 20...
By giving back through your words and actions, the holiday can be a very graceful and godly time when individuals can reflect and try to make themselves a better person. These holidays allow spiritual growth, which is one of the most vital aspects of the Jewish religion. Without an absolute understanding of gratitude, faith, and humbling yourself before God, this religion is not truly embraced, by embracing these aspects the religion can be illuminated in all ways and seen as one of the most beautiful parts of life.
My favorite holiday is Christmas because I feel joyful. Also, I can feel how warm the atmosphere is, almost like a fireplace. In an apartment with white walls, there is the living room with a tall, dark green Christmas tree decorated with colorful blue, pink and purple Christmas ornaments, and colorful red bright lights. In the meantime, my mom and my husband are cooking dinner, and there is the smell of a pumpkin candle burning on top of the table. While we wait for the food to be ready, we all sit down in the living room to watch some classic movies like “Rudolph”, “The Little Drummer Boy”, and even if it’s not classic “Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas”.
Under Jewish tradition, boys are given Bar Mitzvahs upon reaching the age of thirteen (the female variety is a Bat Mitzvah). Typically, Bar Mitzvahs are hosted in synagogues and require substantial interaction with a rabbi. For my Bar Mitzvah, however, my family found an alternate route. Instead of at our synagogue, my Bar Mitzvah would be at an excavated archaeological site in Israel. I quickly felt guilty for agreeing to this arrangement. I had long been dreading the arduous preparation that my synagogue required for Bar Mitzvahs, but now it seemed that extensive Talmudic study would not accompany my transition to adulthood. Most of the work associated with my Bar Mitzvah would consist of learning to read my parsha (a Torah portion,
In the James family Thanksgiving is far from perfect but this year I wanted to change that. Know more playing Minecraft on the Xbox. It's just going to be chatting at the dinner table and eating till we pass out, while watching football. I was determined this will be the perfect Thanksgiving. But know I had to pick out my outfit for tomorrow.
Not because I was working, watching movies or reading a good book. Not because I was up working on the mountain size pile of laundry sitting in the corner of my room that calls my name.
I was born and raised in Vietnam, so I naturally observed my culture from my family and my previous schools. I learned most of my culture by watching and coping the ways my family do things. My family and my friends all spoke Vietnamese, so I eventually knew how to speak and understand deeply about my language as I grew up. At home, my mom cooked many Vietnamese foods, and she also taught me to cook Vietnamese food. So I became accustom Vietnamese food. I also learned that grandparents and parents in my culture are taken care of until they die. At school, I learned to address people formally and greet higher-ranking people first. In Vietnamese culture, ranking and status are not related to wealth, so they are concerned with age and education.
I was called into admin with three managers sitting around. What is Christmas all about? After reading the play a Dolls house Christmas, I realized that Christmas
Christmas to me is a celebration, which includes spending time with my family, decorating the entire house, inside and out, and shopping, for the people I love. Doing this with the people I love is what means the most to me. Spending Christmas with my family is very important to me. We usually gather and celebrate at my parent’s house, in East Tennessee. My husband, our three children, and myself travel from California. My two sisters, their husbands, and children come from a nearby town, for our celebration.
Christmas was always a big event in our family. We always spent Christmas Eve with my father's family and Christmas Day with my mom's. There was always a lot of food and many gifts, but for the first four or five years of my life, I had no clue what we were celebrating. I really don't think I cared too much, being a young child caught up in all the excitement. And I had something to call it. Christmas. That's all I really needed until I stumbled upon a Christmas special on television entitled A Charlie Brown Christmas. I must have been four or five years old at the time, I can't remember for sure, but I don't think I had started kindergarten yet. But I know I was curled up in a Sesame Street sleeping bag in front of our old television set, one of the small older models instead of the giant entertainment centers like we have now.
Ever since I could remember, I have spent Christmas at my grandmother’s house, a house which is full of comfort, warmth, and happiness. At Christmas, I have always been able to escape the cold and dark real world allowing myself to truly enjoy just several moments in time. These moments have left impressionable memories from my childhood making Christmas a holiday that is special to me and my family. It is a time for my family to get together, share stories, laugh, and even cry.
Christmas is my favorite holiday because it is the time of year that everyone should spend with their family and friends loving them unconditionally. Every Christmas, my family and I, on my mother 's side, join together on Christmas Eve to be able to spend time with the ones which we love. Considering that my family loves to eat, my grandmother cooks a ginormous feast! My grandmother loves to cook, but on Christmas she goes crazy. She cooks dressing, corn, potatoes, macaroni, green beans, sweet potato casserole, and my favorite pecan pie. After making sure everyone gets enough food, we all join in the living room to share stories and open our presents. My cousin, Brady Parker, always finds a way to make
