Only 136 more hours until basketball season. And then only 3,387 until it's all over. For the last four years, the Seaholm Girls Basketball team has been my second family. These people who’ve I have seen at their best and worst, who I’ve celebrated with after a win and cried with after a loss, they who know my limits better than I do and support me in anything are the people who make up my world. Being on this team transformed me from a shy freshman to someone strong, both physically and on the inside. I learned that failure is how we learn to get back up after literally being pushed to the ground. That while making mistakes is inevitable, the challenge comes with learning from them. Basketball is what taught me to persevere through
even the most challenging tasks, for helping me to find unwavering toughness in any situation. This commitment to whatever I put my mind to is what makes me who am. I know that however good I am at something, whether it be a school subject, sport, my job or club, that I can always improve. This team has become my family, and basketball a metaphor for my life. I want to face every challenge head on, with disregard of the fear and doubt accompanied by the possibility of failure. To instead know that I will fail, many times, but with each failure I will improve and make better mistakes.
...k now through everything. We should know no matter what we are put through, we can always come out on top. Our determination as a team lead us to do what many believe that we could not do, winning the state championship game against the nation number one team making the Pearland Oilers Texas Division 5A State Champions.. Even though the damages of football can be permanent over a long period of time it changed my life and I would do it all over again.
The first day we got there we had started off so wrong by arguing. We weren’t doing well and we argued most of the time. Us as a team, we honestly made ourselves look bad in front of the coordinators and other teams that were watching us. The coaches had given us a real big pep talking about sticking together as a team to make us better. Although we didn’t think we needed it, it actually
After my first year on the team, the coach warmed up to me. He still however, kept his distance, but I learned to rise above him. I played a total of eleven tournaments and even went to the state championship. Golfing on the team made me so mentally strong. I learned that I could do something if I wanted to, even if there was no support for me doing it. I continued to play for the rest of my high school career, and improved with every shot.
As the final whistle blew and the last of the crowd was leaving, me and my teammates cringed as we glanced up to see the final score. The other team celebrated with their friends and family as we went too our coach to get yelled at once again. This was the last game of the season and we finished winning a total of zero games, probably the worst record in E.L Wright middle school history. After listening to the last speech of the season from our head coach all of the players grabbed their bags and proceeded to the locker room. As we walked down the long dirt road towards our locker room we all looked at one another and surprisingly every single one of us had a big smile on our face.
This experience has taught me many valuable lessons. I learned that it is important to fight and work for what you believe in. I have learned more skills than soccer, such as teamwork and communication skills. I have learned that it's good to broaden one's horizon by meeting and becoming friends with people from other schools and communities. I'm looking forward to the soccer district and regional, and we hope we qualify for the state championship.
...ft," Coach said as we hurried out of the health room. She was right. There was only half the time left. Warm ups seemed to fly by, and before I knew it there were only 35 seconds left on the clock. Murray's team had already headed for the bench for their coach’s last second instructions. "Let's bring it in girls," yelled Coach Moore from our bench. We all ran over not wanting to miss any important last minute words of wisdom from Coach. "OK, starters check in, you know who you are. As I have said, they are about equal in ability with us. We need to go out there and play our hearts out tonight, girls. Enjoy this, it is your last home game this season," Coach said. With that the Ref. blew his whistle to signal the start of the game. I, with the rest of the starters, walked out onto the court and got ready for the tip off, knowing I was completely prepared for the game.
With the constant support from the Director of Athletic Development and Promotions, I was able to achieve a lot of goals I set for myself before joining the team. The most and confidence provided by my director was incredible and I am forever grateful for that. My director understanding my other campus commitments and allowing me to work from campus was a huge help, without this I would have not been able to achieve my goals. I will never forget the friendships I have made with the teams. I thoroughly enjoyed working for the two teams, they are not only hardworking but very respectful.
“If you can’t beat em them, Join em” I gazed outside my window, looking up to the sky that was so crystal clear that it appeared to mirror my own image if I looked close enough. The sun was out, shining bright per usual but with a hint of sparkliness. It was a perfect way to start my day, but per usual my brother and his friends were outside playing an intimate game of basketball. The ball would dribble up and down, “whump whump” until one of them would shoot, “swish” it goes in the net, this causes them to burst into a celebration. Nine years old me always found this routine my brother and his peers followed annoying, the sound of a basketball dribbling was enough to put me in a foul mood for the peaceful day was distributed with shouting
The Basketball Journey Did you know that less than 1 in 35 Senior High School basketball players get to play in college? Once they become Seniors in college they only have a 1 in 75 or 1.2% chance of making it to the NBA. Getting there seems almost impossible now, but there are several things you can do to increase your chances and defy the odds to become a great basketball player. I will take you through the journey of a high school player to a college player and a college player to a professional, while showing the skills necessary at each level. Playing basketball in High School is where you will acquire the skills necessary to carry you along the way.
Two years ago as an emblematic high school athlete, I along with my teammates went to support our middle school basketball team. In this setting I came across several people who are not as passionate about special needs children as I am. They have come across as being disrespectful in situations involving special needs children; which is heartbreaking as those children are my passion. Being that I have grown up playing basketball and relish it, I decided to go and support our middle school basketball team after practice one day along with a few teammates. Upon arrival, I was instantaneously drawn to watch the opponent during their warm up.
Their encouragement helped me to push through many painful and rough practices. I always tried to give them the same encouragement whenever I could. Keeping my teammates and myself mentally positive made some of the most brutal workouts a lot more enjoyable! The optimism that surrounded me at our practices helped me to reach new goals as a runner that I know I definitely could not have reached on my own. Our team's' optimism also allowed us to able to be competitive even though we were a very small team.
For years, I never thought I would have a niece that looks up to me. Until two years ago when my little niece was born. Everyday I come home to that little rascal begging for me to play with her. But, little does she know, she’s going to be facing a tough and difficult life like all of us. Life isn’t just Trolls and Moana, there are many rough patches. School is complex to your everyday life, friends are going to be a huge part in your daily routine, and I encourage you to join basketball.
But, that was before I met all of you guys. Before I realized that I would have extraordinary friends and teachers. The Hornets team is like one big family. Sometimes we fight, but most of the time we are all friends. We’ve made so many memories together in these short two years.
When I think back to the long hours I spent in this gymnasium, the most prominent memory will be my final game there. It was a night of emotions. I was surrounded by encouraging teammates, supportive family and friends, and finally I received my reward for the energy I had spent there for four years: I made the game winning shot.
One day when I was 3 years old I always saw my sister playing basketball. I had always wanted to play with her but I didn't know how to play basketball. So when summer came my dad bought a basketball goal for me,a little one of course. So my dad and I went out there one day and my dad started to teach me to play basketball.
