The television was shining bright as the sun in the dark family room, on a nice Saturday afternoon in the mountains of Durango, Colorado. It was barley 7:20 in the evening, on June 19th, 2016 when Barack Obama was still president and the Zika virus was spreading around faster than memes. “Blocked by James!” suddenly is yelled on the the bright television in the dark family room. Lebron James just blocked Andre Iguodala off the backboard. At this moment, all the Golden State Warriors fans in the dark family room erupted in anger, confusion, and stress. My mom and I both yelled “Let’s go!”. The Cleveland Cavaliers were up four on the Golden State Warriors. My bandwagon friends we’re hanging out on the couch in their greasy Stephen Curry
In basketball, the National Championship game is the dream of every kid that plays basketball in college. NC State’s basketball team wasn’t well known in 1983. Jim Valvano was the coach and he knew he had a great group of kids. When they won the ACC tournament against the great Ralph Sampson and Virginia, people thought that the win was just luck and they probably wouldn’t make last when they got into the tournament. Throughout the tournament, NC State kept surviving and advancing. In Johnathan Hock’s documentary “Survive and Advance”, Hock uses stock footage of the games that were played during the tournament, different points of view from the players, and the sequence of the documentary to prove that NC State’s basketball team were the underdogs during the whole tournament; however they were able to win despite their adversity
Joes High School’s total enrollment consisted of sixteen girls, and twenty boys. Ten of the boys that had enrolled there played basketball. All of the boys were over six feet tall. Lane Sullivan, the new coach of the basketball team, had never even touched a basketball before he started coaching. Sullivan had never coached anything at all before he started coaching the Joes basketball team. In order to gain knowledge about the sport, he got a book about it. He started coaching in 1927, but before the 1928 basketball season, Joes High School didn’t even have a gym. Instead, they’d practice outside on a dirt court, and two times a week they’d take a bus to the nearest gym, which was ten miles away. In order to play home games, the boys had to play in the local dance hall. The “court” was nowhere near regulation size, and the ceiling was so short that the boys couldn’t shoot an arched shot. The people who attended these basketball games had no place to sit and watch the game, the all stood around the edges of the court and on the small stage. Joes High School finally got their own gym around Christmas time because the people of Joes donated their time and material in order to make it happen.
Dreams come and go every night, but some dreams tend to stay for a lifetime. I have always dreamt to become a professional athlete in some way or another. Growing up I have always looked up to many different athletes. Whether it was Ladanian Tomlinson on the football field or Kobe Bryant on the basketball court I have always had some athlete that I wanted to be like someday.
Smith and Carlos were then able to walk off the field but it just got worse, “the shock was gone and it was officially getting ugly” (Carlos 121). The audience started to yell at them and called them “anti-American” (Carlos 121). Because of the social setting, people did not understand the purpose of what they were doing or what it had represented. There was ta...
Two weeks ago, I was home watching a Chicago Bulls game. I started to analyze
When Kyrie Irving sank a layup with 2:28 to play, Cleveland climbed back to an 88-82 deficit. However, Pistons guard Reggie Jackson sank a floater on Detroit’s next possession to put Detroit back up by eight. The nail in the coffin came moments later. As James drove for a bucket following a Cavs steal, Detroit shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ripped the ball from James’ hands. Pope raced to the other end of the floor for a spectacular layup that put Detroit back up double-digits, 92-82 with 1:26 remaining. After Pope’s stellar play, the fans in The Q began to head for the
My long and strenuous journey to be like Michael Jordan became an obsession, plaguing me from the second grade to high school. Like many children, I grew up idolizing “His Airness.” Emulating his intensity and competitiveness, I devoted myself to basketball, sacrificing weekend after weekend to the court. Before I knew it, my teammates had dubbed me “Mr. Automatic.”
The Golden State Warriors are in the midst of what should be a brutal series with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. The Warriors entered the postseason coming off a regular season that saw the team break what many thought was an unbreakable regular season wins record. Going 73-9 this season was an amazing accomplishment for Golden State, especially when you consider that they broke the 72-10 record of a Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls team. The Warriors are also the defending NBA champions after besting the Cavs in last year’s Finals.
I have been playing high school basketball as a Lady Hornet since my freshman year, and I firmly believe that I have given tremendous effort into being the most valuable player that I can be. Ever since I was a child, I have had an immense passion for the game of basketball. My mother played collegiate basketball at William Carey University, so all throughout my childhood, she was my main inspiration to play. I will be forever indebted to her for pushing me to play the fantastic sport of basketball because I have no idea who I would be without it. While playing this sport for almost thirteen years, I have learned many valuable lessons along the way that have influenced the way I live out my life.
The roaring of the crowd on November 17 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC finally fell silent late in the fourth quarter after star linebacker Luke Kuechly was slow to get off the field after a huge hit to the head. American’s live to be entertained, and the football field is one of the main sources of enjoyment for many. Immediately after Kuechly’s hit, it was quiet in the stadium for the first time that day. The fans watched in fear, waiting to see if their star player could finish the game and bring out the win. However, they all became disappointed as Kuechly shed tears while being carted off the field, not because they were worried about the player and his head but because they feared about losing the game. Americans want excitement,
Basketball is a big part of my life, one year ago in tournament final game two of our best players were hurt and the team was relying on me. With the time winding down on the clock we were down 8 points. Somehow I got our deficit down to two points with 30 seconds left, after an intense defensive stop 10 seconds remained on the clock; our coach called a timeout. A play was drawn up for me to take the shot. Mitchell inbounded the ball to me as I came off of a screen, I had an some-what wide open shot, I took the shot, you could hear the crowd go silent as the ball left my hand and headed towards the basketball. It felt like everything was going slow motion, the ball was getting closer and closer to the hoop and I…….missed it. The buzzer sounded
Finally, the day has come, October 25th. Our game was against the Washington Wizards at 7:30p.m. I didn’t realize the whole first quarter has passed at the score of 32-20 with Portland leading. Coach looks at Presley and I and says “ get in there.” We look at each other and nod at our chance to play. “Let’s do our best,” I say to Presley. He nods in agreement.
I woke up from my dream that told me I was gonna be a phoenix basketball player and that I was at one of there games. I was so happy because one day that might become true. I like basketball because, it's fun.

Ever since I was a little boy, about eight years old or so, I had an extreme passion for the sport of basketball. On weekends, I would wake up in the morning, eat a bowl of frosted flakes or cheerios, put on basketball shorts and then go in my driveway to shoot around. I would be out there for hours just shooting around or playing with some random kids that I would occasionally see walking around my neighborhood. This was satisfaction to me, but even better was playing on multiple public teams and not just playing in my driveway every day. In elementary school, I played in a recreational league, just like almost every other kid who tries out basketball when they were younger. This was fun and all but it was nothing too serious. There were never any practices, it was just one or two unorganized games per week. I never took
