The Field
Since I was little I have always known that I did not want a desk job. I have always loved using my hands to build things or to solve problems. But I didn’t like the idea of a construction job, or standing in a plant and watching things go down an assembly line. I wanted something that would keep me on my toes, as in different every day, and allowed me to do something that I could see the result of my work soon after. I just couldn’t find the right job; nothing sounded good to me. That was until one day my dad needed help with some wiring in an extension we were doing to my house. People do not have to go to college to become an electrician. Even though that is true it is not a bad idea. There are a few degrees where a person can learn the craft of an electrician but also learn much more. An excellent example of this is at Chattahoochee Tech. There is a degree called industrial maintenance and electrical technology. Here are the other careers you could also have Industrial Maintenance, Plant Maintenance, Commercial Maintenance, Residential \Maintenance, and Welding HVAC (www.Chattahoocheetech.edu) To become an electrician someone must have a high school diploma or something equivalent. If a person does not go and get a degree, then they would have to go through an apprenticeship. That usually takes around two years to complete. (Study.com, 2015) If a person were to go to college they could learn a much wider range of skills. That would allow for a greater variety of careers, and more opportunities. The out-look for is increasing. It is up to a 14% increase, which is much faster than many other careers (Electricians: occupational career outlook handbook: U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). If a person were to get more schooling they would have a much higher chance of getting a better job and they would continue to have employment.
