The Dinner that Went Wrong My older sister Courtney and I were home alone on a warm Sunday in spring. We were hanging out in her room paying board games when she asked, “Are you getting hungry for dinner?” “Yeah, I guess I am.” I replied. We went downstairs to the kitchen to go through the fridge and cupboards. While my sister was going through the cupboards, she found some Kraft Mac ‘n’ Cheese. We both agreed Mac ‘n’ Cheese would taste good. Courtney texted my parents asking if we could make it. They replied yes. We started getting the ingredients and realized we were out of milk. My sister had me, go downstairs to get the milk. When I came back she was Googling how much water to boil when it said it on the box! Courtney, then
didn’t know how far to turn the knob to boil the water and wouldn’t take my advice even though I knew. So, she guessed. She turned the knob as high as it could go. After two minutes or so, it started spurting water at us. Courtney wasn’t able to turn the knob down because of this. I went on a search to find the closest fire extinguisher. Thankfully it was in the closet right next to the kitchen. Finally, the water had started to boil and it was time to cook the Mac ‘n’ Cheese. Once we used the colander to drain the water from the noodles, we couldn’t agree on what was ¾ of a cup. I knew what it was but Courtney again wouldn’t take my advice. I finally gave in and we finished making our Mac ‘n’ Cheese. We both tried it at the same time and both spit it out. “Ewe, it tastes rubbery!” I exclaimed. “I am warming up pizza you in?” Courtney asked. “Yes!” I replied. “Yes, yes, yes.” We ate our pizza and were cleaning up when our older brother, Jeff, drove up the driveway in his old Honda Civic. As soon as he stepped in the door we gave him a little bowl of our “delicious” Mac ‘n’ Cheese, as we told him. He took a bite, gave us the bowl, and went to his room. Then we decided to take pictures and videos to remember this day. Next time we will watch a video on how to make Mac ‘n’ Cheese.
In the James family Thanksgiving is far from perfect but this year I wanted to change that. Know more playing Minecraft on the Xbox. It's just going to be chatting at the dinner table and eating till we pass out, while watching football. I was determined this will be the perfect Thanksgiving. But know I had to pick out my outfit for tomorrow.
When I was little, me and my family were sitting in the living room and watching T.V. and the next thing we hear is the doorbell. When my mom opened the door our family friend Mary, told my mom that she had dropped her keys in the dumpster and needed me and my
It was a cold, rainy day. I could see most of the kids at the bus stop had winter coats and hats. The clouds were particularly low in the sky. After evading the numerous puddles in the road, I reached the bus stop and walked up to a group of friends. A girl in my class spotted me and asked, "Are you going to the dance tomorrow?"
Failure isn’t always something you have control of or have the ability to predict. Failure seems to happen at the worst of times; however we need to accept it, because you cannot always win. My greatest failure would be tearing my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), my junior year in a lacrosse game, through no fault of my own in which my body physically failed me, but it truly changed my aspect of life in multiple ways.
The one instance that really sticks out to me was a few years ago. It was an early winter day, and I was up early for some odd reason. It was just like any other day, I was eating a granola bar and watching the morning news. I was just sitting there on the couch, and then my mom walked in. I noticed that she was not quite herself as soon as she walked into the room. She was walking kind of funny and slurring her speech. I asked her if she was okay, and of course she said “yes, I am fine.” I continued to eat my granola bar and ponder the situation. She was still in the kitchen searching for something to eat, but she left with nothing. She returned back to her bed. I knew something was obviously wrong, but I didn’t know what to do. My mom hated when I asked her about her blood sugar, but I decided to ask anyway. I walked into
I am what my uncle always calls a “Half-baked cake”. I was born in India, raised in Kuwait, cultured in America, and am currently living in Qatar. Although one would say that’s only four countries, I was transferred to different ovens while still being baked.
We were traveling thought all the beautiful places and cities in the country. During our vacation, one day we stopped at a restaurant in a small town. As we were eating, my 16-year-old cousin said to me hurry up, finish your meal and we’ll go play outside. I was a little boy just turned six years. I was excited to go play outside with my cousin, so I was the first one to finish with my meal.
"Are you guys ready?" I ask my family for the second or third time. "Yeah," my sister Carly responds while fast-walking to the dinner table with her usually cleaning outfit on, sweatpants, sweater, a cap (today on backwards), and a small red cleaning towel on her shoulder. We had just finished eating Sunday dinner at my grandma Chauncey's house We almost always eat dinner with my grandma on Sunday. I have been waiting for about five or ten minutes, after I helped clean off the table. Then my dad, my grandma, and I sat down at my grandma's wood dinner table while my sister Carly grabbed the Parcheesi board game. The colors of the Parcheesi box looked vibrant compared to the dark brown wood table. The sun shining brightly
It was the last Saturday in December of 1997. My brother, sister, and I were chasing after each other throughout the house. As we were running, our parents told us to come and sit down in the living room. They had to tell us something. So, we all went down stairs wondering what was going on. Once we all got down stairs, the three of us got onto the couch. Then, my mom said, “ Well…”
It was the end of one of my performances for my senior musical. Me and my fellow cast mates were laughing and discussing things regarding the musical. In the middle of one of the conversations I was having, my phone started ringing. It was my mom so I answered and she was crying so hard that I could barely understand what she was saying.
It was Tuesday and the day was draining away. I wanted to go buy new hair dye, but I knew it was too late. Careless, I got money from my piggy bank and asked my little sister Natalie to come along. I usually go out by myself but I decided to take her to feel more safe. Since my parents were not home yet I had to make this trip quick, so we took the bus.
My Dad wanted to take us parasailing, and my sister and Carrie (my new step mom) wanted to go shopping. We decided to wait for a boat to pick us up in the afternoon for parasailing, and before that we would go shopping. So we went shopping until we got hungry for some lunch. Me and Tori just wanted to get fast food because we didn’t want to be late for parasailing. My dad decided to just take us to Hardee’s, but it would take us awhile to get there because we had to go to the one closest to the boat, which was about an hour away. I love long car rides, so this was the time for rolling down my window and listening to my music on my
It was three weeks before Christmas when my little sister Emily barged into my room. I was busy preparing gifts for the holidays and also was listening to music. I took an earbud out to listen to what she had to say, but I still was not facing her. She then asked if Santa was real. In my busy state of mind, I nonchalantly said yes and urged her out of my room so I could finish what I was doing. At the time, I did not think much about my response.
It was dark that night, I was nervous that this dreadful day was going to get worse. Sunday, October 23, 1998 I wanted to start writing this to tell about the weird things i’m starting to see in this new neighborhood. Gradually I keep seeing pots and pans on the sink suddenly move to the floor. I would ask my sister but she is out with my mom and dad getting the Halloween costumes. When they got home I didn’t tell them what I saw because i've seen Halloween movies and I have to have dissimulation otherwise the ghost will come out and get me first. October 24, 1998 I think I got a little nervous yesterday with the whole ghost thing. 12:32pm, Went to eat lunch with the family today and I go to get my coat. I heard the words furious and madness,
We were all a bit tired after we got back to the clearing at the beginning of the path, that lead to the river, my house was the closest so we all went there to clear up any evidence of us being near the river because we all knew too well it was forbidden. Everything was cleaned up and everyone had gone to their houses to put back the supplies and then we all met up at Hannah's house for a cup of hot cocoa and ramen noodles. Later that night my mom entered the living room and I felt a hot flash of guilt wipe across my face then she asked me how my day was and I started to feel like a mouse about to fall into a trap while trying to find the right words. I sat there for a few seconds in slight discomfort until my sister of all people came and distracted my mom enough to allow me to just stroll out of the living room and say, “Nothing out of the Ordinary”.
