Personal Narrative: The Catholic Church Of Preston County

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something.”(Barack Obama). Beginning in the ninth grade, my mother decided that it was time for me to start giving back to the community that has raised me, and despite my initial reluctance, I have enjoyed and prospered through every minute of it. In the past nine weeks, I have served the Catholic Church of Preston County the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department. Through these experiences, I have served Saint Sebastian’s Catholic Church and helped others connect with their faith, brought light into people’s morning with good conversation and compassion, and helped the KVFD raise the much needed funds required to save lives.
The Catholic Church of Preston County has been an integral part

of my life ever since my biological mother granted me to my family on the basis that I would be raised in the Catholic Faith. Though my service in the church, I have helped others reach the peak of their faith and introduced others to the faith. I serve as an alter server at least once a month every month, and I normally stand in for those unable to attend. I have participated in many baptisms and helped with the Eucharist.
From the first time I began working at the KVFD monthly breakfast, I knew that I have a passion for working with people. Working with the organization has helped me come to the conclusion that I want to serve people as a career through social work. Ever month, for at least three hours, I work with the firemen to pick up the dirtied plates and clear the tables for new customers. I have made lifelong friendships through my work, and I have learned the importance of helping those around you. The monthly breakfasts have introduced me to a variety of different types of people and driven me to learn basic sign language in order to communicate with a few of the regular customers.
Volunteer work is important to individuals because it teaches good work ethic, valuable communication skills, and creates an unteachable empathy for others. By helping the community to grow and prosper, one also helps themselves to become a well-rounded individual. Without volunteer work and volunteers, the community would not be able to function from the lack of love, compassion, and understanding brought by those that serve others.
