Brittany Today I was walking to school when a car was going past. The ancient car was covered with rust and grime. Just as the car was beside me, it backfired. A cloud of brown smoke made it hard to breathe or see anything, finally as the smoke cleared, I realized something about it had left me as a furry small brown kitten. I had to somehow show my mom what just happened to me. My mom was still home, so I decided to try dragging my book bag back to the house. My book bag was much too heavy to pull so I push it with my head. I was trying to get inside the house, but my mom saw me. Well, the kitten version of me, and instead of letting me in the house, she hit me with a broom. My mom took my bag and went inside, shutting me outside.
When I was little, me and my family were sitting in the living room and watching T.V. and the next thing we hear is the doorbell. When my mom opened the door our family friend Mary, told my mom that she had dropped her keys in the dumpster and needed me and my
One aspect of reading that I enjoy is getting so wrapped up in the story. When the character's heart pounds, my heart pounds. When they hold their breath, I hold my breath. It feels like I'm there in the story. I get absorbed in the plot and take in every detail. A challenge I have regarding reading is that I tend to stop in the middle of a series if the beginning of the book isn't very interesting. I want to read further, but I end up procrastinating until it gets lost under my bed. I am hoping to improve my reading this year by remembering to look up word I don't know. This will help me to better understand whatever story I am reading. My favorite text from last year was definitely The Book Thief. This compelling novel always kept me on the
The air hung around them, tensed and quiet. The fragility of her emotion was threatening to shatter. It is as if that time stood still for her. She fingered the brim of her notebook, nervously and took notice of the cup of coffee on her side. Controlling the sudden urged to drown the caffeine all at once; she carefully picked the cup and warily sipped its content. It had long been cold, and her tongue appreciated that fact.
There is always one creepy house on the street, this house is Mr. Frazier. I need to find a way to sneak in to Mr. Frazier’s house alexander said. Maybe I can use dads ladder to climb in to Mr. Frazier back window. Alexander climbed up to the back window. Bing pow boom bark bark bark! Alexander falls down the ladder. I have to find a way to get rid of those dogs.
My cousin told me this. One evening, it was thunder-storming pretty badly outside. This lonely woman was sitting in her house watching television when someone knocked on her door. She got up to open it, and in front of her was this other woman who was just a wreck. She had blood and dirt all over her, not to mention all that rain drenching her. Pretty creepy sight. [She visibly flinched.] The woman outside goes, “Can you please help me? I just crashed my car and my baby is still in his car seat!” [The storyteller’s tone became empathetic here.] Of course, the lonely woman says, “Okay,” and the two go outside together. The rain picked up and things got really hard to see, but the lady led the lonely woman to her car, which had fallen into a ditch. Inside, there was the little baby sitting in his seat, still alive. The lonely woman reached in to get it, but then she gets all shocked, because you know who was in the driver’s seat? [I shook my head while she allowed her pause to linger.] It was the dead woman.
It was the last Saturday in December of 1997. My brother, sister, and I were chasing after each other throughout the house. As we were running, our parents told us to come and sit down in the living room. They had to tell us something. So, we all went down stairs wondering what was going on. Once we all got down stairs, the three of us got onto the couch. Then, my mom said, “ Well…”
The first time my sister brought her boyfriend home, I showered her bedroom with filthy, smelly clothes, including her undergarments. Imagine her surprise when she opened her door and laid eyes upon her own dirty laundry. I knew she’d be mad, what I didn’t know was that she would react like a teased bull chasing a red cape. She charged at me like I was a vault in the Olympics, and she was one point away from the gold. Suddenly out of nowhere came a broom handle to my abdomen. Broom abuse or not, I couldn’t stop laughing.
My tie flew in the morning wind. The only thing that I hoped was that I would not be late to work, I had been warned a couple of times about me being late. Luckily the bus too was late as usual. As I was boarding the bus I looked up for a vacant seat. What I saw then was quite unbelievable.
With music blasting, voices singing and talking, it was another typical ride to school with my sister. Because of our belated departure, I went fast, too fast. We started down the first road to our destination. This road is about three miles long and filled with little hills. As we broke the top of one of the small, blind hills in the middle of the right lane was a dead deer. Without any thought, purely by instinct I pulled the wheel of the car to the left and back over to the right. No big deal but I was going fast. The car swerved back to the left, to the right, to the left. Each time I could feel the car scratching the earth with its side. My body jolted with the sporadic movements of the car. The car swerved to the right for the last time. With my eyes sealed tight, I could feel my body float off the seat of the car.
Reading and writing have been and always will be a part of my life. At a very young age I used to love the both of them. I would write stories about monsters and fantasy worlds and I would read about them too. Slowly as I grew older my ability to write so creatively just withered away. Writing soon became only for school purposes. My love for reading continued, but I was no longer reading about the fantasy worlds with unicorns and fairies, instead I became keen to reading crime fiction. Although I had a love for it, it no longer became something I would do daily, it is now done whenever I have the chance to.
There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
I am by myself wearing my blue jeans and an old flannel shirt. It is cool outside but I decided to leave my gloves at home, feeling comfortable with my warm shirt and my sturdy boots.
I kicked my little brother out of my bed because of his ferocious tickling tactics to get me to wake up. He then propped himself up and went for a leg kick to get even with me. And for the next five minutes, we would go at each other like it was the WWE, but the winner was always decided on whoever first told on mom. When one of us would initiate the tattling, the other would regularly create the face of dread. This time I felt like I had the upper hand in this argument and immediately rushed downstairs in search of my mom. The wailings of my brother to say nothing about the situation that would constantly be three steps behind me, made me want to go faster down the gigantic concrete stairs that were designed for people on stilts. When I arrived on the ground floor, I rushed to my mom in the tiniest kitchen that had a max capacity of two people. I started to spew out what happened in our altercation that would be altered to my favor while my brother jumps in seconds later,
I can clearly remember being in the car on a humid day with a little overcast. We were driving in the car when all of a sudden the wind started to pick up and it started raining a bit. Within five minutes, the weather progressed and there was so much wind blowing around the car that we could no longer hear the radio. I can remember when I saw a stop sign spinning in circles like a “merry-go-round'; with electrical problems. I do not remember how my mother got us home so quickly and where we were because all around us was a thick gray fog. However, all I can recall from that point on was sitting with my head in my lap in the back seat of the car. I never witnessed the true power of nature until this incident.
I jumped out of the car with my two sisters and ran to the bathroom. When we left the bathroom, we walked back to the car. We saw that our dad was still putting gas in the car, so we went into the store to buy some sweets. I bought “warheads” that said extremely sour, and a bag of chips called “baked with fire” that looked like they would taste really hot. When we purchased our food, we walked back to the car. As soon as we started driving, I opened my bag of chips. I was so scared that they would be extremely hot. For that reason, I also bought a bottle of water. I opened it before I took a bite out of the chip. Luckily, they were not hot at all! I grabbed my sour candy and tasted it. My face changed so quickly; that I started to squint my eyes and point my lips. I could not take another bite of it because it was really sour! Eventually, I was not hungry anymore. Probably because I ate my whole bag of chips and a sandwich. When I finished eating, I was feeling exhausted, so I took a long nap. I woke up, and dad told me that we only needed to drive for one more hour. While we were driving through town, we saw a row of trees on fire! It was so smoky that we could barely see the street we were driving on. I felt scared for life and terrified that we might crash. After a few more minutes of driving, the smoke cleared up and we could see again. Finally, the hour passed and we arrived in California. Mrs.
