If you listened to my advice you should be a decent shooter by now, but until you shoot 100% from anywhere on the court then there is still room for improvement. You could be good at three-point shots, passing, dunking, or tough finishing in the paint. If your team as a whole is good at these skills then you could get picked to be in the NCAA Tournament in March. This is where you can showcase your talents on the biggest stage in college basketball. If your team wins you will most likely be drafted, but if you don’t then you still have another year to prove them …show more content…

It was not until the year 2002 that the NBA was able to find someone to match Jordan’s dazzling acrobatic style of play. His name is Lebron James. Lebron, who plays shooting guard and small forward, stands at an athletic six-eight. James, however, never played in the NCAA. He was drafted straight out of high school in the 2003-04 season, by the Cleveland Cavaliers. James is already on the road to success by achieving co-rookie of the year, and he appeared in the Olympics. James is expected to be a champion, but he may not have what it takes to become a real champion such as Michael Jordan was. Before Jordan or James can be categorized as a champion, they have to be able to handle pressure, fame, and maintain a positive relationship with their team. When comparing Jordan and James’ clutch capabilities, or their ab...
Your dreams of being someone may not turn out the way you think they will. The documentary Hoop Dreams is a story about two boys from the ghetto that want to play in the NBA. Arthur ¨Man”Agee goes to Marshalls and William Gates goes to St. Joseph’s which are both situated in Illinois, where their dreams of becoming a pro basketball player vanished. Both of the boys face obstacles that are outside of themselves. Arthur´s family struggled with money, education, and pressure from others hurts him. Also, William struggled with balancing his family with basketball, the pressure from others, and education.
Hoop Dreams is a story about two young men who want to become basketball players in the NBA. The author Ben Joravsky wrote the book. The idea for the book came from the documentary movie, Hoop Dreams, which is a true story. Arthur Agee and William Gates are the names of the two boys who were followed from eighth grade to twelve grade to do the movie. Arthur Agee was a 5'6 125 pound guard from the playgrounds of Chicago when St Joseph recruiters saw him. Arthur was playing against guy's three years older than he was and he was still the best in the neighborhood. Arthur's parents Bo and Sheila Agee were very poor people who were on cocaine and could not support their family. Big Earl, the guy who recruited Arthur told his family that St. Joe's would be able to pay Arthur's tuition if he played basketball for them. Arthur went to St. Joe's and met William Gates. They had become friends in grade school but had never really done anything together. Eventually William turned out to be the better player and all the attention and money was focused on him. Therefore, Arthur was booted out of St. Joe's in the middle of the school year. He was forced to enroll at Marshall, the area public school. As a result, Arthur could see his dreams of the NBA were slipping away. Along with that, he couldn't keep his grades up enough to attend a Division I school. He and the Marshall Commandos ended up going downstate Arthur's senior year. They finished third in the state overall. Arthur ended up going to a junior college named Mineral Area in Flat River Mississippi. After his two years in Mississippi, Arthur received a scholarship to Arkansas State. He finished his degree in communications and he graduated. Arthur never did reach his dream of going to the NBA, at least yet. As you can see, it takes a lot for an inner city boy to try and reach his dream, but most of the time it never happens. William Gates was also 14 when he was recruited to go to St. Joseph. He and Arthur both had to wake up around 5:30 every morning so they could get on the subway to make it to school in time.
Although many youngsters fail in the NBA, there are a few high school players who have had, or do have a successful career in the NBA. Some of these are, Moses Malone, Kobe Bryant, Tracey McGrady, and this year’s most valu...
It is becoming more and more a trend for high school and underclassmen basketball players to forgo their college eligibility to enter the NBA draft. Most professional sports have restrictions to limit mentally and physically immature players from throwing away their college education to be unsuccessful in the professional ranks. In the National Football League, NCAA football players are not allowed to declare for the pro draft unless they have been in the school’s program for at least three years. In professional baseball and hockey, although they do draft players straight from high school, they have a minor league system set up. These minor leagues allow players the time to develop and still play against an excellent level of competition. This helps their growth process so that when they get into the real big leagues, they are somewhat ready to play and be a factor.
The early age entry rule, has been blamed for taking away the talent that made NCAA basketball popular over the last 40 years (Hughes, 2013). Recently many of the most talented basketball players have entered the NCAA with no intention of playing a second, third, or fourth year. The NBA permits players to be drafted at an age that many have considered is too young to live the lavish lifestyle of a professional player. This has been cause for the big debate of should the NBA change the eligibility to 20 years of age and two years removed from high school.
Attention Getter: “I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a Baller, I wish I had a girl who looked good I would call her.” That timeless phrase coined by Ski-Lo in the early nineties, resonates with so many of us because all of those goals are things that people relate to being successful. And while I can’t help you with the first and the last respectively, becoming a “Basket-baller” is quite feasible, with a little hard work.
Then, you need to be young. Your youth is a great place to start, and there is no way to get into the NFL, unless you are drafted. How do you get drafted? First you need to be exceptional in high school football, then go to college football, and then be acceptable enough to be drafted. But you will be a backup to the backup. This is an incredibly hard spot to start, if you want to be at least reliazed.. You really need to prove yourself in practices. Also, youth brings many learning opportunities by the pros. “My rookie year was huge for me as far as the learning curve, especially those last three games.” ( Tim Tebow, NFL Quarterback). Tebow may be a horrible quarterback, but he learned from Denver’s Peyton Manning, and that would be valuabl...
eligible for the NBA draft; or in other words, if you have years of eligibility
According to NCAA research, only 9.7% of college baseball players make the transition from college to the pros (“Estimated Probability”). The Huffington Post reports that about 1 in every 200 high school seniors who play baseball will eventually be drafted into the MLB (“How Hard Is It to Make It to the MLB?”). These numbers show how hard it is to make the pros. In order to become a successful baseball player, a person needs to know the steps to becoming a professional, understand how to find purpose in the organization, and picture what real success in general looks like, so that dreams can become realities.
SWOOSH. That’s all I hear in a gym full of 100 or more screaming fans and the sound of the buzzer going off as if it was never going to stop. As I laid on the ground gasping for air, I came to my senses that I just hit the game winning shot against Tates Creek high School with 3.7 seconds left. This shot was the shot of my career but who would of knew 7 years prior to that shot that I would of became a top rated shooting guard in the city of Lexington, Kentucky. My whole basketball career all I’ve known is to shoot a basketball jump shot, that was my duty, my job, my responsibility but never did I feel I was mechanically doing my whole life’s work wrong.

For my senior project I chose to research about it and found out many interesting things I didn’t know about it. My knowledge for basketball grew even more.
