Soundtrack to My Life
Music means many things to many people. Music has the power to transcend boundaries, motivate, inspire and influence our emotions among other things. Throughout my life music played an important role, especially during my more troubling moments. Many of my dearest and fondest memories are easily relived by merely listening to music. My musical tastes have changed as I have grown. During different time periods in my life my musical sensibilities provided the soundtrack that I lived by.
I smile as I think about the music I listened to during my childhood years. I was heavily influenced by my parents when it came to music as a child. I can remember sitting home in the evenings and watching my dad work out in the garage while listening to amazing Hispanic bands like El Gran Combo, Hector Lavoe, and Celia Cruz. The hypnotic nature of Salsa music always had my dad dancing salsa in between sets of lifting weights which was so much fun to watch at a young age. In our text it was stated “Once rhythm was discovered, it never left musical art” (Janero, Altshuler, 2012, p. 158). For me once I discovered the salsa rhythm and how hypnotic it is I would never forget it or how it reminded of my dad during his workouts. That is a memory that I will always cherish.

adolescent music tastes where wildly different from that of my childhood. It was a time period of musical discovery for me. Janero states in our text “Hip Hop is a broad term that describes and entire way of being” (Janero, Altshuler, 2012, p. 185) for me there is no better way to describe it. I was fully immersed in hip hop as a form of music but also as a culture. It was during an era in music affectionately known as the “Golden Era of Hip Hop” with titans such as A Tribe Called Quest at the forefront with one of my all time favorite songs “Scenario”. During this time the music I listened to was a way for me to fit in with my peers. I soaked in as much as I could about hip hop to the disdain of my parents. I wasn’t in love to spite my parents. I was in love with hip hop because of the raw lyrics, neck snapping drums and at the time it was relatable for me. Now as I am much older I find comfort in R&B music. The smooth lyrics and slow rhythm soothe me and in my time of despair I always turn to R&B music to bring balance to my life. 2 of the most inspirational songs to me are “Hero” by Mariah Carey and “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly. I have lost count how many times I have turned to these songs to help me deal with stress. The lyrics, combined with melodies in both songs are so inspirational and motivational that after listening to them it’s hard to stay in a bad mood. Electronic Dance Music or EDM is the type of music that brings me the most happiness.
Reason being is that the music is so high energy it’s hard for me to stay still while listening to it. In fact I always listen to this type of music whenever I am working out, walking or riding bike or just out and about somewhere. Bands like Swedish House Mafia are in heavy rotation on my smart phone and on constant repeat throughout the day. Also the EDM community is friendly and that adds the lure of the EDM festivals. Just knowing that when you go to an EDM festival you are meeting with like minded people with the same taste in music and that makes them an experience you will not soon
forget. In my musical journey I find that my tastes are considered eclectic among my peers. Nevertheless by sharing my musical journey I also learned that no matter how my musical taste change the one thing all the music I enjoy has in common is the hypnotic rhythm. That rhythm symbolizes motion and to me that equates to moving forward in life and leaving the past in the past which is the way I want to live my life on a daily basis.
I think music has a way of explaining something or telling a story. Music can bring up happy times, it can also bring up sad times as well. Certain songs can remind someone of troubling issues from a past, can be the reminder of someone you have lost, it can also be a reminder of many happy times; such as weddings, high school dances, or even just hanging out with friends in the back
Music is a large consumption of my daily life and the artists I listen to have shaped me in some way. Listening to music is one of my most time
If one were to look back into the world’s history, one would find that an important and consistent element is the world of music. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.
Since the earliest days of human civilization music has been a key tool for communication of stories which carried emotions through them. If we think back to our youngest years of life music has surrounded us whether it was from our parents singing us lullabies or from some sort of toy that played music we can say that musical melodies have helped shape or lives one way or another. Once we start growing up and figuring out who we are our musical preferences change; some people like classical and some like punk. We start to befriend people who like the same music as us and eventually we may attend a musical event. Our lives somewhat revolve around the music that we listen to.
Music is something that I believe we could not live without. There is a quote by a philosopher named Friedrich Nietzschethat says “without music, life would be a mistake”. I interpret this to mean that humans would not be creative if it were not for music. There is a reason that music can take us where word cannot. When you hear so many different sounds coming together to make a perfect harmony it is obvious that no words can make you feel the same way as the music. The best thing about music is that there are literally too many genres to choose from. There are different genres of music for any mood you are in. The origins behind these different genres is an interesting and rich history that is begging to be studied and written about. Let me explain....
Music is one of the most fantastical forms of entertainment. Its history stretches all the way from the primitive polyrhythmic drums in Africa to our modern day pop music we listen to on our phones. It has the ability to amaze us, to capture our attention and leave us in awe. It soothes the hearts of billions, and it is so deeply rooted in my life that it has touched my heart as well. Everyday I walk to the beat of the song stuck in my head and hum along to the melody. For me, to listen to music be lifted into the air by the hands of your imagination and float around for a while. You forget about your worries, your troubles and find peace within the sound. Every chapter in my life is attached with a song. Every time I listen to a certain song, thoughts of my past come flooding back
Music is one of the few things that has remained constant through the centuries this world has existed. Not only does music provide entertainment, it also has several effects linked to it. Music allows emotions of happiness and sadness to arise. From those emotions, physical effects, negative or positive, can occur. Music has a profound effect on the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical aspects of a person.
Ever since I was a small child, I have loved music. The strong, steady beats, the
There are many ways in which music affects and surrounds us. It is our creative outlet, our passion, our distraction, our night out or simply our moment of relaxation. Throughout the centuries, music has played a vital role in our lives. We as a society immerse ourselves in music day to day. From grandiose social gatherings and dances in the Middle Ages, to live concerts and monumental performances to date. Music is in films to elicit emotion and in television commercials to make us consumers of the newest technology. More importantly, it is in our preferred listening device because we choose the particular songs and artists we like and want to hear. The Marriam-Webster dictionary defines music as “sounds that are sung by voices or played on musical instruments; the art or skill of creating or performing music.” But why do we choose attend the Bruce Springsteen concert at Wrigley Field and not the Chicago Symphony Orchestra? What makes us enjoy one type of music or artist and not another? Whether you make music or simply enjoy it by listening to it, we are all connected to music in a variety of ways.
Music has always been a big part of my life. Music is not just a bunch of melodies, rhythms, and vibrant sounds. It is a comfort to me. The lyrics of a song challenge my intellect and the rhythms and beats affect my emotions. Music understands me when people don’t. At times it takes me back to an event in my life or even in history. Both consciously and subconsciously my mind remembers the emotions that are attached to a certain song. It can make me feel on top of the world or the complete opposite; music can change the atmosphere and also set the mood. Music has power over my human soul. It soothes it. I cannot imagine not having music to listen to. It is a powerful force and my love for it is incredible.
Music is also an art and doesn’t have a fix meaning. It is special and has different meaning to different people. For example, musicians think that music is something very important to them and it is like their life. They will spend most of their time playing music. Some youngsters think music as a part of their hobbies. They enjoy listening to music when they are free.
Music, a form of art, made up of unique and special sounds containing elements of pitch and rhythm can powerfully soothe one’s soul. Firstly, there are different types of music, and each has its own features. These sounds and features are what I admire in music because to me it creates a new form of communication to one’s consciousness. It stimulates our mind and gives it a sense of harmony and peace through the hardships that life poses for us. As a kid, I would always listen to music from any genre, deciding which genre would complement me the most as I grew older. In middle school, I remember going on the computer and finding a website/program where I could make my own beats. From that day on, I spent countless of hours each day making sure the tune sounded proper and pleasurable for my ears. At first, it wasn’t good, but eventua...
I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
Music is an essential part of life because of the expression it allows people to have, its entertainment, and its therapeutic ways for the world.
Through music we are able to comprehend someone’s personality, their views, their culture, and who they are as an overall person. The music you listen to is a reflection of who you are and your own personal thoughts. As I reflect on the music I listen to I came to the conclusion that I gravitate towards songs that depict the emotions we feel through lyrics while being able to relate it to my own personal experiences.
