Often, women walk down the beauty aisle of a grocery store and see all types of merchandise, but not many really know what is right for them. They see products that promise to rejuvenate dry, damaged hair, volumize limp, and flat hair, straighten curly hair, and regenerate thinning hair. With my hair being a kinky curly, when I was younger, I would ask my mother if we could buy relaxers and do them at home. She would give me the same answer every time, “This should only be performed by a professional if you do not want to ruin your hair.” My parents would try a variety amount of styles, from twist to little pigtail buns, anything so my younger sister and I we could look presentable. After my parents struggled with our hair for years, they decided they would allow us to get our hair professionally relaxed. The first time I stepped into a hair salon, I was about 8 years old. I remember sitting in the salon chair just wondering what is going to happen. This was a new experience, something exciting. …show more content…
As I watched the hair stylist put this white paste like substance on my hair, I wondered what is this going to do, it reminded me if a thick conditioner, although the smell was unpleasant.
Because of my limited experience, I questioned how is this going to straighten my curls. After sitting in the chair for about 10 minutes with the relaxer in my hair, I started to feel tingling sensation to which I asked the hair stylist about it and she informed me it was time to wash my hair. I was eager to feel if there was a difference in my hair. She took me back to her chair and began combing through my hair with ease. The way the comb glided through my previous kinky curls amazed me and I wanted to learn
more. Though this service helped my hair in the beginning, I later learn the effects of long-term use and the damage that can occur. This prompted me to begin looking for other ways to manage my hair while also protecting it. After doing some this research, I came upon different braiding techniques, known as protective styles and it was also then when I was introduced to weaving styles. Prior to acquiring this knowledge, I was able to perform cornrow and french braids, but to see more into the industry and you can create was inspiring. In my sophomore year of high school, I found a cosmetology school in Arlington, VA called Graham Webb Academy. After discovering the school, I told my parents I wanted to attend this school after graduating high school and start a career as a cosmetologist. Hair styling had been my biggest passion, and the excitement of this career had stayed with me since I was 8 years old. I could not wait to begin a new chapter after high school was over. Upon graduating high school, I went on to start cosmetology in the fall of 2011 at Graham Webb Academy. Honestly, I thought going to the school would be easy since I have the passion and desire for it, but like any school, there can be rough times. We did not start out with anything truly hair related, but with health and sanitation requirements. In the first week of school, we never touched our mannequins. When we did, it was to do styling and designs, as I was use to when I was at home. We learned some basic cutting techniques so we could create the foundation of the hair to be styled. Of all the knowledge and experiences I was exposed to at school, the most important one to me, was when my school provided the opportunity to attend a hair convention in New York called International Beauty Show (IBS New York). Having never been in New York, I was thrilled with chance to go to the city. In addition, the fact that world-renowned celebrity stylists were there and there were opportunities to talk with them and learn directly from them. That year, the show happened to be a few days after my birthday, which made it more of a special trip for me, especially since my mother and sister, came along. We spent a day in New York, and they were able to see inside the world that had captured my attention. We went to classes and learned a few advanced things even I had not received in my training yet.
In 1909, Morgan opened a tailoring shop, selling coats, suits and dresses. While working in this shop he came upon a discovery which brought about his first invention. He noticed that the needle of a sewing machine moved with such a high speed that often its friction would scorch the thread of woolen materials. He then set out to develop a liquid that would be a useful polish to the needle, reducing friction. Once, when his wife called him to dinner, he wiped the liquid from his hands onto a piece of pony-fur cloth. When he returned to his workshop, he saw that the fibers on the cloth were now standing straight. He conceived that the fluid had actually straightened the fibers. In order to confirm his theory, he decided to apply some of the fluid to the hair of a neighbor's dog. The fluid straightened the dog's hair so much, that the neighbor, not recognizing his own pet, chased the animal away. Morgan then decided try the fluid on himself, trying small portions of his hair at first, and eventually his entire head. He was successful and had invented the first human-hair straightener. This invention has helped a lot commercially. A lot of today’s media features people with straightened hair. This might not be possible if Garrett Morgan hadn’t made the contributions he did. He marketed the product under the name the G. A. Morgan Hair Refining Cream and sold by his G. A. Morgan Refining Company, which became a very successful business.
Everyone faces varying degrees of peer pressure at least once in their lifetime, but what matters is how one reacts. In Bad Haircut—a collection of short stories—the author, Tom Perrotta, examines the effect of peer pressure on the main character, Buddy, in a comical yet informative light. Buddy faces peer pressure consistently and ends up associating with the wrong people, due to a lack of backbone. Yet Buddy is different and a better person than those who he associates with because he is compassionate and able to recognize that he is a follower; therein lies the irony that only the reader sees Buddy’s merit while the other characters only see the results of his friends’ poor judgment.
In the recent past year or two, a woman’s natural hair has become a big thing. Before, African American women, to be specific, were so disgusted by their hair. They would do anything in their power to change the “nappy” aspect of their hair to “beautiful”. They would use relaxers very so often and hot combs.
According to 10 Weird and Wacky Beauty Facts by Andrea Lavinthal, in ancient Greece, the most sought-after hair color was blond. Not many Greeks were naturally blond, so light hair was probably perceived as beautiful because it was so exotic. Women would lighten their hair using plant extracts or arsenic. They also washed their locks with a mixture of ashes, olive oil, and water. She also explained how “it was a shame that extension weren’t available during the Heian period when a Japanese woman’s beauty was judges by the length of her hair, since the ideal was considered almost two feet longer than her waist. We’re assuming that ponytails were a popular hairstyle back then.” There are many other crazy facts about beauty facts like Vaseline makes your eyelashes grow and can take off makeup, or if your finger nails are discolored from using dark polish, use a slice of lemon on them and they will regain their color (The beauty magazine, Roselyn Miller, pg. 67). I have many talents and interest that will help me succeed in the cosmetology field like communication skills, business skills, a sense of creativity and technical skills. Many people enroll in hair school to learn the basic fundamental skills to become an outstanding candidate in the field. A cosmetologist’s creativity skills, business skills and communication skills need to be very effective. Other skills are required as well, but without basic skills a cosmetologist will not succeed in the industry. How can you operate a business without knowing any of the basics? How can you work on someone’s head without knowing what style would fit their face perfectly? As a cosmetologist sometimes you have to let your client know its okay to try new styles and that everything will not always work on them. As new trends are invented or start to resurface from previous years you will need to stay updated.
Hair dyeing became popular in the 1950’s, at that time, about 7% of American women chemically colored their hair. Today, about 75% of American women chemically change the color of their locks. Every day, new techniques and styles are added to the world of hair. Hair Colorists spend their time helping their clients change their look and add some fresh pigment to their clients’ faded strands. Although professional hair coloring has its challenges, hair colorists have a wide variety of creative outlets, have close personal connections with their clients and help them to build self-confidence and aid them in expressing their individuality.

First, the injections create tiny perforations in the scalp, which triggers the body’s natural healing process. In response, the body produces more collagen and elastin in order to repair the skin. However, because the skin is not actually damaged by the microinjections, the increased levels of collagen and elastin encourage the growth of healthy hair and skin. Then, the active ingredients injected cause a chemical action, stimulating the mesoderm in order to encourage hair growth. Only high quality ingredients are used to ensure the effectiveness of this process.

Take it from someone who has been there before, I have experimented with my hair and have damaged it a lot by thinking I knew what I was doing when in all reality I did not. It was horrible, I have ended up with dry damaged brittle orange hair before and it was not pretty at all! The devastation of damaging your hair because you think you know what you are doing or think you will save money by doing it yourself is not at all worth it in the end. It is always best to seek the help of a professional when you go through your stage of change. The extra cost is well worth it, not only will you save your hair the trouble, but you will also be a lot happier the first time around.
... ranging anywhere between 3.5 to 6.0 and are used to restore the pH balance after an alkaline treatment. Conditioners also keep cuticle layers from getting caught which keeps hair from tangling and reduce static electricity in the hair by sealing in moisture. There are many different types of conditioners aimed toward people with different hair textures. For example, protein conditioners are designed to slightly increase the diameter of the hair by adding a special coating to it. These conditioners are deigned to pass through the cuticle, penetrate the cortex, and replace any keratin that has been lost from hair.

It was dark that night, I was nervous that this dreadful day was going to get worse. Sunday, October 23, 1998 I wanted to start writing this to tell about the weird things i’m starting to see in this new neighborhood. Gradually I keep seeing pots and pans on the sink suddenly move to the floor. I would ask my sister but she is out with my mom and dad getting the Halloween costumes. When they got home I didn’t tell them what I saw because i've seen Halloween movies and I have to have dissimulation otherwise the ghost will come out and get me first. October 24, 1998 I think I got a little nervous yesterday with the whole ghost thing. 12:32pm, Went to eat lunch with the family today and I go to get my coat. I heard the words furious and madness,
