Many totem poles from Native American cultures have animals. Those animals symbolize many character traits. My totem pole consists of seven total animals. The dragonfly and butterfly represent the past. The fox and owl symbolize the present. The beaver, dove, and turtle represent the future.
According to “ Native American Totem Animals & Their Meanings”, a dragonfly is “... carefree, [has a] strong imagination, higher aspirations, lightness, and joy.” I chose it to represent my past because as a child, I loved to imagine that I was with the characters in the television. I wanted to be so many things like a princess, a fairy, a superhero, and etc. The dragonfly also symbolizes “ happiness, speed, and purity” as it states in the text, “Animal

The author states in “Native American Totem Animals & Their Meanings”, the fox is “ quick-witted.” Some people might agree after seeing my grades throughout the years and the goals I’ve accomplished. According to the text “Animal Symbols”, the fox “symbolizes anticipation, observation, and stealth.” I find those skills whenever I'm trying to avoid being involved in trouble, or the opposite (rarely). Observing others helps me understand people and the reasons for their actions. I also chose the owl because it stands for “insight,... mystery, freedom, and secrets”, as stated by the author in “Native American Totem Animals & Their Meanings”. It is also a symbol of “wisdom”, according to the text “Northwest Symbols”. Many of my peers would find me somehow mysterious because I rarely open up and talk about myself. Because I am like this, people are not afraid to tell me their secrets. My so-called wisdom is from me reading an enormous amount of books in my …show more content…
I chose the beaver to symbolize my future because according to “Native American Totem Animals & Their Meanings”, the beaver is “determined, strong-willed,... dreamer, protector, and builder.” I plan to be an engineer in the future. These traits would be part of what I need to achieve my goal. Based on the text “Northwest Symbols”, the beaver is also “creative, artistic, and determined.” As an engineer, these traits would also be needed to think outside-the-box. I also chose the dove to represent my future. According to the author of “Native American Totem Animals & Their Meanings”, the dove symbolizes “peace”. In “Northwest Symbols”, it states the dove symbolizes “love, gentleness, and kindness.” I hope in the future I'll be able to maintain strong contact with my loved ones. I also hope to be able to make others happy by lending them help. Lastly, the I chose the turtle because it “symbolizes good health and long life”, according to “Animal Symbols”. I wish to be healthy and live a long time, so I can experience the world. The turtle is also a “ nurturer, [is] protecting, [has] patience, strength, endurance, and longevity”, as stated in “Native American Totem Animals & Their Meanings”. I hope I can continue accomplishing goals and continue caring for my loved
Symbolism, regarding animals is common for the Lumbee Indian. Animals represented certain ideas, spirits and characteristics. Instead of a preacher or reverend the Lumbee had a medicine man or shaman, which communicated with Gods. They were wise and were important to the tribe at a higher level. They played significant roles in decision making, traditions and ceremonies.
Throughout the novel Bless the Beasts and Children, by Glendon Swarthout, symbolism is used frequently to show a weakness in a character or to fulfill a purpose in the novel. The most apparent weaknesses in the bedwetters was their need for radios to help them sleep. The hats portrayed each characters personality and background in some cases. Also, The Box Canyon Boys Camp is in itself a symbol representing American society in general.
Marie de France uses several symbolic objects in her stories to get the point across. Sometimes what is the simplest object can have a thousands meanings. Whether you're talking about trees to the color of an article of clothing, there was a reason, a purpose for making it a weeping willow or a red scarf. You need to look deep within the story line and fine it's true meaning. In Yonec, Laustic and Milun, see the usage of birds, especially that of a swan. But why use birds? For the reasons that birds symbolize so many things such as love and romance, purity and redemption and forgiveness and the chance to start over.
The article “The problems with Native American Mascots” written by Laurel R. Davis covers many arguments regarding the use of Native American names and images for sports teams’ mascots. Rather or not sports teams should be able to continue using Native American names for their teams and images for their mascots is a highly controversial topic. Opinions will vary, especially when a person of Native American heritage is being asked opposed to a person of non-Native American heritage. Native American images should not be used for sports teams’ mascots as their use stereotypes the group, misrepresents many aspects of the Native American culture, as well as negatively impacting the lives of those that come from Native American heritage.
...rst nation individual and not having one of these can cause many problems to the outcome of the that individual later in their life. The symbol of Beaver symbolizing family and what it is all about, how first nation people stick together shows us the struggle that Will and Annie go through to protect their family and who they love. The Symbol of bear showing protection and love conveys to the reader that when Will had those bear’s it was them that defended him from Marius and his gang. Lastly but not least, the symbol of goose in the novel shows freedom and taking on a long difficult journey and not giving up. The book Through Black Spruce written by Joseph Boyden tells the readers that the symbols present in the book shows the readers the struggles and hardships the characters in the novel are facing, which in turn helps the reader understand its own internal self.
All things in nature; humans, plants, and animals were believed to be a spiritual being. Totemism, the belief that humans all humans have a spiritual connection with spirit beings (often in the form of an animal) was central to the Native American tribe’s spirituality. Health and wellbeing are closely linked to spirituality, requiring a spiritual and harmonious relationship with the environment.
The Second color on the wheel is Yellow it is known as the “East” it represents Air and Flight. The Animal that represents the East is animals of wings and flight which includes the hummingbird, The owl, and the Hawk. In all sports, teams use mascots to represent their team’s pride, strength, and will to win. The role the mascot plays is an intimidation factor, as well as something to motivate the team. Teams will have mascots that range from anything, from an animal to an inanimate object, like a hammer or an orange. Mascots rarely fall under scrutiny, except for the mascots that represent Native American tribes, people or cultures. Many schools and teams use some sort of Native American reference as a mascot. The Native American mascots used range from names like the Indians, Chiefs, and Braves, which are some of the more generic ones, to Seminoles, Fighting Illini, and Chippewas to name some of the tribal based names.

Perhaps the illustration of the fox near the grape vines on the cover of Townsend’s book acts as a homage to previous title covers, as many other versions depict images of foxes, and someone involved in the creation of this version decided that this was the best image to display. The other possibility may be that there is a story that centers around the fox that has been in the fables and has a certain reputation of being either the most popular character or a character that is a part of one of the best messages. There is an urban legend that the fox is an immortal sentient being who leaps from book to book when a new image of it is added to a newer version of Aesop’s Fables and the new fox adds a modern fable to the collection. It is highly probable that the image of the fox is used in order to connect to previous versions as since Townsend translated the fables literally from the Greek, it is likely that he wanted to stay as true to the original version as
This picture to me is saying that even when a mule deer has died and the only thing left is bones and its horns, there is still life with that deer. The deer has lived a life that none of us could have imagined, no one but that deer could tell the story of its life. The mule deer is a symbol of living and how nature can be so hard on animals. The picture makes you feel like the deer is staring at you and that maybe it is trying to tell you something. I know the excitement that comes with hunting and when you shoot that deer and come up to it, there is nothing in this world that feels better. It is really hard to explain the feeling that comes with hunting, but this picture is a deer that has died and it could have been by a hunter or it could have been just old age or disease. It is hard to tell with this picture what has happened to the mule deer.
The symbols aren’t just inanimate objects but characters also. For example; Piggy an overweight asthmatic kid who cannot see without his glasses, represents mental strength and physical weakness. With his keen mental strength Piggy tries to enforce a governmental system. “What’s better--- To have rules and agreeing or to hunt and kill?” (164) Piggy tries one last time to knock some sense into the unruly boy’s right before Roger murders him. Piggy is a rational boy who tries to think about the way that adults would handle this situation. Piggy is the outsider of the group, and many o...
I have decided to discuss the topic of Spirituality in Native Americans. To address this topic, I will first discuss what knowledge I have gained about Native Americans. Then I will discuss how this knowledge will inform my practice with Native Americans. To conclude, I will talk about ethical issues, and dilemmas that a Social Worker might face working with Native American people.
